Belize has a new protected area: the Sharon Matola Wildlife Sanctuary.  The 2600 acres were officially declared a protected area on June 3rd.  Great to see more land in the corridor being protected.

"This protected area, which will encompass more than 2,600 acres of land around TBZTEC, was officially declared during the June 3rd sitting of the House of Representatives, and further endorsed by Government of Belize officials during a celebration at the Zoo later that day.

Plans are also underway to formalize the Sharon Matola Scholarship Fund, which will provide support for young Belizean women studying at the tertiary level in Natural Resources Management, Biology, Veterinary Technology, and associated fields. An anonymous donor has pledged US$5,000 as a matching seed fund* for the scholarship.

Sharon Matola Day, celebrated publicly on June 4th, was very well attended by over 230 Belizeans, many of whom arrived with in-kind donations of fresh fruit, veggies, and meat."

Belize is the World's True Cradle of Chocolate

Belize is the World's True Cradle of Chocolate | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The BBC has a great article about chocolate in Belize.  AJAW Chocolate in Cayo is one of many mentioned.

"There are nearly a dozen artisan chocolate companies in Belize taking cacao from bean to bar, part of a robust movement to reclaim the small country's rich chocolate heritage...

Cacao – the principal ingredient for chocolate – was both consumed and used as currency by ancient Maya royalty and political elites throughout the historical region of Mesoamerica, which included southern North America and most of Central America. But not all those areas were suitable for cultivating cacao."

Why Belizean Food Should Be On Every Culinary Enthusiast’s Radar | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize is getting the recognition it deserves for being the foodie capital of the region.  Cayo has quite a few chef-owned restaurants, and is known for having some of the best food in the country.  Conde Nast Traveller just published a great article on culinary and cultural tourism around Cayo and Belize.  They interview Lyra Spang from Taste Belize in Placencia, and mention the San Antonio Women's Cooperative and Ka'ana.

"A nation famous for its archaeological sites, rainforests, and reefs is finally getting attention for its diverse and sustainable food scene...

In the Cayo District, home to popular archaeological sites like the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave, the San Antonio Women’s Cooperative invites travelers to learn about the Yucatec Maya practices of farming according to moon cycles, and hand-grinding corn to make tortillas. Boutique hotels in the area are also employing Maya women from the community for hands-on experiences. At Ka’ana Resort in San Ignacio, guests can step inside a traditional-style Maya hut where sisters Amrita Cocum and Clarita de la Fuente lead cooking classes around a blazing fire hearth overlooking tropical gardens."

Eve, The Earthworm

Video of the day.  The Pesticides Control Board, Belize has released an animated video called Eve, the Earthworm. If you want to know more about earthworms, this short video is worth a watch. Amiel Topsey animated the 3 minute video.

'There are many types of earthworms, and they all have the unique role of maintaining a healthy environment. Earthworms are biologically designed to break down organic material and release the nutrients back into the soil, their movement loosens and oxygenates the ground, and they're also indicators of soil quality.

Due to the remarkable importance of the Earthworm as bioindicators, the Pesticides Control Board #Belize, partnered up with a local animator to create a short educational video to express the earthworm's importance in visual form."

Belize Barrier Reef Turns 10,000!

Belize Barrier Reef Turns 10,000! | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Happy birthday to the Belize Barrier Reef.  It's been estimated to be 10,000 years old.

"Earth’s second largest reef, the Belize Barrier Reef is celebrating its 10,000th birthday in 2022, according to scientists who have studied the origins and composition of the reef.  The Belize Barrier Reef is without question one of the world’s greatest natural wonders. The reef runs 190 miles from Mexico in the north to Honduras in the south and is part of the larger Mesoamerica Barrier Reef System.  It is the largest reef of its type in the Northern and Western hemispheres consisting of offshore atolls, several hundred sand cays, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons and estuaries.  The system’s seven sites illustrate the evolutionary history of reef development and are a significant habitat for threatened species, including marine turtles, manatees and the American marine crocodile.  Since 1996 the Belize Barrier reef has been designated as a UNESCO World heritage site in recognition of its importance as a marine habitat and global natural resource."

The Legend of the Music Tree

The Legend of the Music Tree | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great story about the massive mahogany tree from the Chiquibul, known as The Tree.  Many famous musicians' guitars were crafted from it.

"What is certain is that the story begins in 1965 deep in the Chiquibul jungle, a remote and largely uncharted broadleaf rainforest in what was then British Honduras and is now Belize. It was there that a clutch of vagabond loggers scouting for timber happened upon an ancient mahogany tree.

Mahogany had for centuries been that nation’s primary export, and was a popular target of poachers and smugglers. Few large mahogany trees remained, and this one was enormous—12 feet in diameter at its base, soaring 100 feet into the canopy. If not the most massive tree in the forest, it was certainly a contender for the title."

Maya Forest Corridor in Belize Benefits Jaguars

Maya Forest Corridor in Belize Benefits Jaguars | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

CNN published an article about the Maya Forest Corridor in Belize, which is instrumental for Jaguar migration.  Worth a read.

"In an attempt to avert this catastrophe, a number of conservation organizations -- including Runaway Creek Nature Reserve, Panthera, Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Belize Zoo, the Wildlife Conservation Society and re:wild -- joined forces to protect one essential slice of land within the jaguar's geographic range: the Maya Forest Corridor. The relatively small area -- less than six miles wide and covering 90,000 acres -- has outsized consequences for South America's biggest cat."
