Education is the Only Way Forward

The University of Belize has a special issue of their Bulletin for their graduates, highlighting their accomplishments.  It's a short, feelgood issue, with plenty of great pictures in it.  Congratulations to German Lopez and Leo Koop for receiving EU scholarships.

"'Education is the only way forward for Belize,' declared Senator the Hon. Godwin Hulse, Minister of Labour, Local Government, Rural Development and National Emergency Management in his Keynote Address to graduates of the University of Belize at the Seventeen Commencement Exercises on June 15 and 23 respectively in Belmopan and Toledo.  This graduation special focuses on the graduates and their accomplishment.  Enjoy."

Chaa Creek's Eco Kids Summer Camp

There's still time to submit essays for Chaa Creek's Children’s Summer Camp Scholarship Program.  They have a short video out about the program.

"Every year we team up with a number of private sector businesses to offer a weeklong summer camp scholarship program for Belize's resident school children between the ages of 8 to 13 years old in order to educate them about biodiversity, natural resource conservation, the ancient Maya, traditional healing, and the three "R's" Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  The program aims to install memorable values that will have an impact on the way children conduct their lives, their relationship with our fragile Earth, and the sustainable development of our future."

In related news, they have another submission for the essay competition.

The Chaa Creek Eco Kid essay competition has begun.  Nazeem Ahmad has written this one.  Kids have unitl June 14th to send in their essay about why they want to be an Eco Kid.  Winners get a scholarship to the Summer Kids camp.

"So we should reduce, recycle and reuse.  This is what I do by turning off our room light when we don’t need them, use little water.  I love animals.  In our home I save little animals trapped and I enthusiastically encourage my little brothers and sisters to help and save the little pollinators and insects.  I love playing with cats, dogs, birds and fishes; I love nature.  I’ll do anything to stop global warming that causes the melting of the ice caps.  That’s why I should be an eco-kid at your camp so I can learn more ways to better my environment."

"This video slideshow has pictures of one of our actual scholarship students over several years from the time that 4 the World built the addition to her villages school and started a computer learning center through high school graduation and on to her participation as a 4 the World volunteer at a medical clinic in her village and other villages in Belize."

60 Scholarships Get Funded

60 Scholarships Get Funded | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Feelgood story of the week!  The BNE Charitable Trust has teamed up with Restore Belize, and provided $400,000 towards scholarships to high school.  Thanks!

"But there’s some good news; sixty students are getting a shot at a secondary education through a partnership of Restore Belize and the B.N.E. Charitable Trust.  The students will be a part of the 'I am Belize' Scholarship Program and by extension will get internship and mentorship opportunities.  Last week, B.N.E. Trust handed over a four hundred thousand dollar cheque for investment in the students’ education, beginning this academic year."

Jacob Pavek's curator insight, March 20, 2013 10:56 AM

My thoughts:

I think this is an excellent program for supporting high school students educationally and financially. The program requires that kids maintain certain educational progress, participate in their school's scholarship club, and set up a savings account to help start financial security for the future. This program gives kids money to help pay for the many expenses of schooling and helps them become financially secure for the future. More companies should sponser programs such as this one that encourages educational and financial success for kids in the future. The 60 kids who are selected are lucky to gain scholarship money, additional scholarship opportunities, and to jump-start their future financial security.

"Twenty four young Belizeans embarked Saturday on a unique educational learning adventure as this year’s Chaa Creek Children’s Summer Camp Scholarship Program, better known as the Eco Kids Environmental Summer Camp, kicked off on Saturday July 20th 2013.  According to Chaa Creek founder and general manager Lucy Fleming, the innovative annual event gives Belizean youth an opportunity to learn about their natural world through a mix of adventure, social interaction, fun and hands-on education aimed at instilling a sense of wonder and responsibility for the environment."

My Way to Chaa Creek

My Way to Chaa Creek | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Nuri Galicia wrote a great essay for the Chaa Creek Eco Kid Summer Camp.

"Being the only child in my family I am very optimistic that I will be part of Eco Kids 2013.  The reason why I want to go is bond with other children my age.  Also it will be a wonderful experience with Nature’s beauty for I enjoy birds and hiking.  At the campfire we share funny stories and jokes.  Through-out my life I have never been on horse back, so I am looking forward to have a ride on a horse.  This scholarship will allow me to learn more about gardening for at school we practice gardening.  It will be great for I will know unfamiliar species and expand my knowledge, for teachers can teach us only about name and their functions but not really show us the real plant.  If given an opportunity to be at the camp I will treasure every moment there."
