Have you ridden a horse to Xunantunich yet?  It's a great day trip, as is explained in this article from travel enthusiast Raphael Zoren.  Definitely worth a quick read, and you'll see some good pictures too.

"Have you ever imagined riding a horse on the way to visiting ancient Mayan Ruins?  In Xunantunich, Belize, you can do that and much more!  The Mayan ruins of Xunantunich are the highlight of the Cayo region of Belize and are easily reachable from the town of San Ignacio (or as a vary long day trip from Belize’s Caribbean side). Once you’re at San Ignacio, you can either take a taxi or a horse to the ferry crossing before reaching the Mayan ruins."

Cayo came out in force for the Western Ballaz on Saturday night.  The SHC auditorium was packed with fans wanting to see another great game.  They got what they wanted.  The Ballaz came on strong, having a 10 point lead for some of the first half.  The Tiger Sharks slowly came back during the second half, and in the last few minutes they took the lead.  The Western Ballaz lost, 75 - 70, but the fans really made it the best game of the league so far.

7 Cultural Attractions of San Ignacio

7 Cultural Attractions of San Ignacio | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Just 7?  Yes, Cayo has culture galore.  Raphael Zoren wrote a good article about some of the activities and sights that Cayo has to see.  The Green Iguana Conservation Project, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, and Caracol are all mentioned.  Tubing, horseback riding, and eating on Burns are covered.  There's some inaccuracies, and incorrect observations, but they can be attributed to not having spent enough time in Cayo.

"San Ignacio, Belize is a small lovely town located on the Cayo region of the country and mere minutes away from the border with Guatemala.

Considered as the heartland of the Belizean Mayan World, San Ignacio has its fair share of cultural and adventure attractions, even for those who travel with a tight budget...  The Cayo region of Belize has a beautiful countryside and the best way to explore it is by horse.  There are many routes you can take in order to enjoy horseback riding.  My favorite by far is the one that goes from San Ignacio all the way to the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich."

Cayo National Youth Council Consultations

Cayo National Youth Council Consultations | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Feelgood news of the day.  The Department of Youth Services is starting the Belize National Youth Council, the statutory youth body designated to oversee and advocate for the interest, concerns and needs of youth.  Youths and teachers from all over Cayo met at CET to get the process going.

"There the youths shared some of the challenges they encounter on a daily basis, as well as made suggestions and recommendation on how the Department of Youth Services and other youth stakeholders could better reach out to the youths to help improve their situation, so as to promote an easier transition for their development into adult hood and well-being.  This was all brought forward through group discussions and presentations.  It is important to note that our young people in the Cayo District share a common vision for a better Belize; they were very enthusiastic and eager to share their views and ideas.  The Department of Youth Services is grateful to all the youths and schools represented at this consultation, as their input has set a stepping stone towards fueling the commencement of a district youth council."

Feelgood news of the day.  Michigan State University students are back in Cayo, and doing some community service work while enjoying their stay.  They are working with Toucan Education Programs, who bring many student groups down to do voluntourism.  Thanks, TEP, and MSU!

"For several years, the Bailey Service Organization, a student organization of the Bailey Scholars Program, offered a service learning trip in San Ignacio, Belize.  This opportunity allowed students to actively engage with members of San Ignacio and work by their side on a variety of projects, largely related to education and social service issues.  BSP would like to expand the experience to a wider audience, including BSP alumni and other BSP community members...  We will be working Toucan Education Programs, a locally owned, private business in San Ignacio, who not only helps plan trip logistics, but helps foster our relationship with the community partners with whom we work."
