Nohoch Che’en Sinkhole Expedition

Nohoch Che’en Sinkhole Expedition | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Check out one of the reports from the 14 day expedition that went into the Chiquibul Forest, and explored some of the natural beauty found there.  Tony and Therese Rath got some amazing pictures during the trip.  Check out the size of that sinkhole.  Well worth the read.

A 14 day expedition into the Chiquibul Forest of Belize to explore and document biological and geological diversity, find and map Maya sites and discover what exactly was at the bottom of the Holec sinkhole elicits contradictory emotions for a Belizean visiting the Chiquibul for the first time.

Southwest and American Adding Belize Flights | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Southwest Airlines has announced that it plans on starting flights between Houston and Belize in October, and American Airlines will be adding a direct flight to and from Los Angeles in June.  Sounds like flying to and from Belize might be getting a little cheaper, allowing more people to visit family in both locations.  Should also help with the tourism sector.  Tour guides, get ready.

Falling for Belize

Falling for Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Lebawit Lily Girma, who recently published the 'Jewel of the Jungle' article about Belize in Morning Calm, reflects on how she went about writing it.  Well done, and, spoiler alert, nature was the key.  There are a few pictures - not nearly enough since Cayo is known for its natural beauty - of Cayo in there.

" My memories were like sheets of paper scattered on every corner of a desk.  I had to pull them in, sort and get to the bottom layers.  When I finally dug up that old, newbie version of myself, I was blown away.  Because I realized that the very first thing that pulled me in and made me fall in love with Belize wasn’t food, people, or even culture (even though they were certainly part of why I came to love the country).  It was nature.  Belize’s great outdoors were like nothing I had seen before in my years of travel.  More birds than tourists, more howler monkeys in forests than guides and more birds along riverbanks than boats.  And the sensation that I was immersed in something bigger than myself."

The Battle of Saint George's Caye

The Battle of Saint George's Caye | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Happy St. George's Caye Day!  Joe Awe wrote a synopsis for Nine Eco Cultural Tours detailing what happened, and some of the key players, 216 years ago.  Totally worth a read.  He has a great essay about the allure of Belize.  Lord Rhaburn's Tenth September is on Youtube.

"Between September 3rd and September 10th, 1798, things truly became very interesting in the settlement of Honduras.  The Spanish made a final attempt to take (British) Honduras by force.  The English and a rough neck crew of about sixty five Baymen decided that they would not walk away from their home anymore.  They found it unacceptable and they resisted with all their souls in defense of what is today our native land Belize.  They resisted successfully and perhaps the most important outcome of this final Spanish-English battle on our shores was that the Spanish never again attempted to remove anyone from this land."

The Cayo Side of Belize

The Cayo Side of Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo got hyped up in International Living.  While it's audience is more for people thinking of moving here, it's a good article, and highlights what they think people like about Cayo and its culture.  It's mentions the market, Midas, the SIRH, and even the Chaya Garden Ashram in Cristo Rey.  Cayo rules!

"The fertile Cayo is the bread basket of Belize. It’s also an eco-tourism wonderland.  This region is abundant with exotic birds, indigenous creatures, vibrant flowers and magnificent trees.  Belize’s most desirable hardwood trees—mahogany, zericote and rosewood—thrive in the Cayo...  San Ignacio’s Saturday open market is a social/cultural shopping event.  It’s the country’s largest open market.  Located on the edge of town—next to the banks of the Macal River—the market is expansive, aromatic, and buzzing with activity.  You’ll find an abundant, colorful selection of fresh fruits, veggies, herbs and regional food on offer.  All are locally grown and reasonably priced."

The Cave Where Mayans Sacrificed Humans

The Cave Where Mayans Sacrificed Humans | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Actun Tunichil Muknal continues to be all over the world news.  The Telegraph and the Daily Beast have some interesting articles about it.

"The river that formed Belize’s Actun Tunichil Muknal cave still flows, pooling as it emerges into the dawn sunlight and necessitating a swim to start our journey into the Mayan underworld.  Our guide has insisted on an early start and no one else is around as we take the plunge.  The view back from inside is amazing, the rock arch framing a view of water, jungle and sky; the view the other way is black. That river is always with us.  The water is strangely warm, sometimes around our ankles, then about our necks, but always pushing against us.  Above, bats hang in their holes and tiny seedlings grow from their droppings, atrophying in the dark."
