Calypso Rose Wins WOMEX Award

Calypso Rose Wins WOMEX Award | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Congratulations, Calypso Rose!  She has won the 2016 WOMEX award for being outstanding in the music industry.  That picture was taken here in Cayo at the Soul Project.

Her video for Calypso Queen tells her story, and it's a great song too.

"In a style known equally for its outspoken messages and its party vibe, it truly takes a great Calypso artist to stand apart for their mastery and relevance, as Calypso Rose has done, for over six decades.  In her long career, Rose has transformed calypso in many ways. Her most obvious achievement involve making the calypso scene more open to women: the scale of her talent and success made her impossible to ignore, leading to unprecedented prize wins, including the Trinidad Road March and, the highest of all, the title of Calypso King – renamed the Calypso Monarch in her honour.  Rose is also a musical innovator of her style. She pioneered changes such as shortening her songs to three verses and writing fewer songs every season – both of which became the norm – and in her personal repertoire, she also explores styles such as soca, punta, reggae and ska.  As a living legend and someone who has done so much to revolutionise her field, we are extremely pleased to be able to present Calypso Rose with the WOMEX 16 Artist Award."

Everyone is pumped up about Cayo's new gym.  Yes, the Muscle Hut Fitness Center is open, and they have a great selection of equipment to work every major muscle group.  They're right downtown too, and have a good view of the area from the 3rd of the Manzanero building.

They have some great equipment there, and you can work out just about every body part. Membership is $75 a month, and you can also go to the Muscle Hut gym in Belmopan."

Jungle Love: "Burning Man Inspired" Art Festival

Jungle Love: "Burning Man Inspired" Art Festival | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Jungle Love, an art and music festival, is coming to Cayo.  It'll be the weekend of August 19th, at RawSpa in Bullet Tree Falls.  It's 'Burning Man inspired,' so it'll be a gifting environment.  There will be same amazing music at the event too.

"We're having a Burning-Man-inspired art party that's about being free outside the rat race, commercialism, materialism and consumerism of modern day living, including the for-profit fests that exploit the movement Burning Man perpetuated...  We're shooting for 100 core, progressive, fun-loving people to lead this movement into and through Belize. There will be no more than 200 tickets sold. At $50 per ticket, we will have just enough budget to cover grounds security and medical, hygene and bathrooms, grounds rental and artistic commissions for the event. Any additional revenue generated will go to local art grants."

Cayo Castillo Chronicled

Cayo Castillo Chronicled | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo really steals the show in this travel article from the San Francisco Chronicle.  It's pretty comprehensive as far as attractions go.  3 of the 5 places to stay mentioned in the article are in Cayo: San Ignacio Resort Hotel, Ka'ana(which was just in an article about wellness travel), and Caves Branch.  The Guava Limb Cafe and Pacz Tours are also specifically mentioned.

Cayo a Top Central American Destination

Cayo a Top Central American Destination | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Congratulations are in order.  Cayo was listed on Trip Advisor's top 10 Central American destinations, based upon travelers' experiences in the region.  As it should be, since we have so much to do, including Cahal Pech, seen in the picture.  Cayo came in at 7th place.  San Pedro, the only other Belize entry, came in 1st place.

"It’s true: parts of Belize are getting touristy. But San Ignacio remains rustic, making it a great base for budget-friendly tropical adventure travel. Canoe on the Macal River, or walk to Mayan ruins at Cahal Pech (just be warned: it's uphill)."

La Capitana Pontoon Boat

La Capitana Pontoon Boat | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great article about the La Capitana Pontoon adventure.

"'While staying at Martz Farm Treehouses and Cabanas Ltd in the Cayo District, we were excited to learn that one of the many adventures they had to offer is their signature La Capitana Pontoon Boat tour on the nearby Macal River. Years ago, we had kayaked the same stretch of river before the Vaca Dam was completed in 2010, and we were eager to see how the area had changed. Now, this section of the river has transformed into a lazy tributary, perfect for a pontoon boat tour. What better way to weave through the lush jungle landscape and dramatic cliffs that border the river while exploring waterfalls and playing in the cool mountain water? We couldn’t get our swimsuits on fast enough!"
