San Ignacio, Belize

Video of the day.  International Living has a nice short video about Cayo.  Burns avenue is highlighted.  Big Rock Falls is on there.  Worth a watch.

In related news, the country of Belize was highlighted in a recent video: https://youtu.be/Pif5GEDOOCc

"San Ignacio, in the Cayo District of Belize is exotic and wild, with hand-cranked bridges, mountains, and jungle. Downtown streets are lined with colorful shops and restaurants. Nearby, at the edge of the central town area, is the Macal River, with green parkland along both banks. Children often play in the river, and families picnic in the park.

Xunantunich Maya Site Virtual Tour

Video of the day.  A high res tour of Xunantunich.  Everyone loves Xunantunich.

"Xunantunich (Mayan pronunciation: [ʃunanˈtunitʃ]) is an Ancient Maya archaeological site in western Belize, about 70 miles (110 km) west of Belize City, in the Cayo District. Xunantunich is located atop a ridge above the Mopan River, well within sight of the Guatemala border – which is a mere 0.6 miles (1 km) to the west. It served as a Maya civic ceremonial center in the Late and Terminal Classic periods to the Belize Valley region. At this time, when the region was at its peak, nearly 200,000 people lived in Belize."

Felipe Arias's curator insight, March 14, 2020 5:33 PM
It is the first time I get immersed in a virtual walk around ancient ruins of a civilization, and I have never seen buildings like those so close before. The architecture is amazing and thinking of how they built it make me wonder how endless the human creativity is. I expect to be there at least one time in my life and enjoy it by myself.

Live and Let Live Website

Live and Let Live Website | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Live and Let Live Belize has launched their website.  Their goal is to end discrimination by sharing experiences from all Belizeans.  They welcome those who have a personal experience that proves that discrimination isn't a Belizean value to share it.  They have a youtube channel, which is where they'll share their short videos, and you can also follow them on their fb page.  Great idea, and the videos are worth watching.

"Rooted in Belizean values, the Live and Let Live campaign launches today with the goal of elevating the stories of real people who have faced discrimination – either personally or through the experience of their loved ones – and believe it is time to spark a national conversation about the importance of treating all Belizeans with respect.

The campaign will harness the power of personal stories and our shared values as Belizeans to build public support and understanding for our neighbors who have, for too long, been treated differently simply because of who they are – a female seeking employment in a male-dominated field, a mother worried about balancing motherhood and career, a person with disability who transcends society’s expectations and perceived limitations, a mother coming to terms with her gay child and accepting them for who they are."

Tek Time fi Read Website

Tek Time fi Read Website | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Children's Book Project has a great new website.  Check it out, and read all about their mission and some of the events they've had.  They've brought in over 11 thousand books for the kids to read, and had 7 reading related events.  It's a great way to follow their progress, and you can help them out with a donation through the site too.

Belize Internet Marketing and Website Design did a great job with their website.

"We encourage a love for reading by planning fun book events and putting as many books as possible into the hands of Belizean children and teens. We believe that if children have access to FUN books, they will enjoy reading and not see it as a chore."

Caracol Named Wonder of World

Caracol Named Wonder of World | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Caracol was named one of the seven new wonders of the world by Conde Nast Traveller Magazine.  They nail it in that Caracol represents adventure, eco, and sustainable tourism instead of the over-hyped mass tourism.  Well deserved recognition for the best Maya Archaeological Site on Earth.

"Only one of the original Seven Wonders of the World remains, so we've picked seven new wonders that you can actually visit in 2020...

The ancient Mayans were a remarkable people. Without the wheel, or advanced tools of any kind, they managed to build vast stone cities in the middle of one of the densest jungles on Earth. Chichen Itza and Tulum, in Mexico, are perhaps the most famous sites, but today they are a crush of souvenir stalls and mass-market tourism. Caracol is different. Located in the rainforests of western Belize, this enormous 30 square mile site is utterly undeveloped, free of crowds (less than a dozen people visit per day) and, because of that, perhaps, the most authentic way to experience the mystery and magic of the ancient Mayans today. There are thousands of individual ruins to explore, but the most impressive is Caana, the Sky Palace, a 143-foot pyramid where the king of this Tollan, or great city, once lived. Climb to the top and the view is the same as it would have been more than 1,500-years ago: no tourists, no souvenir stalls, just jungle and stone pyramids as far as the eye can see."

Soul Project Soup Kitchen Project

Soul Project Soup Kitchen Project | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Daniel at the Belize Soul Project has come up with a great feeding program idea.  A soup kitchen, and it's located conveniently downtown.  They have a gofundme page setup.  Thanks to those that are supplying the meat, Running W, and the gas, Sirrom!

"Daniel Velazquez who operates Belize Soul Project has decided to start a meal pick up service beginning this Saturday at the Soul Project location in San Ignacio, across from the police station and downstairs from the Old House Hostel. Gas for cooking is being donated by Sirrom Gas, and meat is being donated from Running W; these donations are SO appreciated!

I am hoping to raise donations for the remaining necessities to sustain the soup kitchen for a few upcoming weeks. Any amount donated will go directly to purchasing to-go containers, produce and other ingredients for a hot meal, and staple grocery items such as milk, eggs, and flour.

Please share this with anyone and everyone you can, and let’s work together to feed the beautiful people of San Ignacio."

In a Country Without Corona

The video is 2 days old, so the title is dated, as the virus is now here.  Great video though, as Katja interviews Dr. Nelson Lopez here in Cayo.  She also interviews someone at Lin's.

"The borders have been closed since today - and the corona virus has not yet officially arrived in Belize. Nevertheless, the country is preparing for the outbreak. Since I'm stuck here for the next 30 days, I made a little report about the situation. If you are interested in further episodes, or ideas, questions, topic suggestions that I should follow up on - let me know!"

Belize Beyond the Beach

Belize Beyond the Beach | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo was listed as one of the 2020 Travel Hot Spots by Ali Wunderman, author of Frommer's Guide to Belize.  Frommer's is one of the better guide books for Belize, and offers lots of great information about the tours, lodges, and cultural hot spots around Cayo.  Chaa Creek, Parrot's Nest, Soul Project, and other spots are highlighted.  Ali was recently interviewed by Javier on the Belize Travelcast.

"Cayo District (Western Belize): The Cayo District is the heart of Belize's Mayan world, as well as its prime ecotourism destination. Between a full plate of active adventure activities and a steady diet of Mayan ruins and ancient burial caves, families will find this a great place to spend time in Belize. The Lodge at Chaa Creek is not only extremely comfortable for families, but they also have their own butterfly breeding project and natural history museum on-site. And if parents need a little pampering, they also have an excellent spa. For families on a budget, we highly recommend the Parrot's Nest which offers free river tubing, treehouse stays and much more family-friendly fun...

Try rappelling into a sinkhole or riding horses to visit a Mayan ruin. And if you like zip-lines, this country has you covered.

Belize’s interior (which, by the way, is less than two hours from the coast/airport, so there’s no logistical reason to skip it), is also where the country’s youth are developing art and culture in a new way. In San Ignacio, the twice-weekly Soul Project (housed beneath The Old House Hostel) showcases live music and rotating installations created by young, local artists, while the San Ignacio Resort Hotel merges hospitality and stewardship with the Green Iguana Conservation Project.
