Congratulations to the UB female relathon team!  They defeated the male team, and this is the 3rd year in a row.

"Females Win 36th Annual UB Relathon.  6 hours 29 minutes is the cumulative time that it took UB’s speedy females to reach the Engineering Department in Belize City, winning the 36th Annual UB Relathon on Sunday, March 30, 2014.  The females started in Belmopan at the Market Square, while the males began in front of the Police Station in San Ignacio but both embarked on their journey at 8:30 a.m.  The females ran with a singular goal in mind: 3-peat as champions.  Their effort paid off when they crossed the finish line at 2:59 p.m.  The males tried their best to win and closed the 20 mile handicap to only 3miles but fell short and finished 18 minutes later. My Body is Precious – Girl Empowerment Campaign

My Body is Precious – Girl Empowerment Campaign | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Kim Simplis-Barrow, the Special Envoy for Women and Children, will be coming to Cayo next week to continue the 'My Body is Precious' campaign and speak about female empowerment.  She'll be in Belmopan on the 28th at the UB auditorium, and in Cayo and Benque on the 30th.  This is great timing considering the horrendously idiotic comments that came from one of the Amandala writers, and the talked about boycott of the publication.  Thanks, Mrs. Simplis-Barrow, we're behind you all the way!

"The Special Envoy for Women and Children will be embarking on a countrywide Girl Empowerment Campaign, which will be launched in Belize City on Monday, October 28, 2013.  This tour is an extension of the My Precious is Precious initiative, which started with the launch of a child friendly book on “good touch, bad touch” in April of this year."

Feelgood news of the day.  26 Belizean youths went to El Salvador to attend a youth conference that focused on contributing to the community.

"Twenty-six Belizean Youth Attend Conference in El Salvador to Learn to Contribute to Their Community.  Youth from six communities in Belize travelled to El Salvador over this past weekend (2 - 5 August) to attend a Bahá’í Youth Conference.  They returned Monday night full of excitement to execute the plans they made for themselves to serve their communities of Corozal, Belmopan, Belize City, San Pedro, San Ignacio, and Dangriga.  This Conference was attended by 660 youth ages 15 to 30 from Belize, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.  It was one of 114 similar Regional Conferences being held from July through October around the globe on all continents and many island groups.  The purpose of these gatherings is 'to summon today's youth' of all faiths and backgrounds 'to put the needs of others before their own' in order 'to aid the spiritual and social development of those around them, especially ones younger than themselves.'"

Road Safety Project Receives Prince Michael Safety Award

Road Safety Project Receives Prince Michael Safety Award | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Road Safety Project has received a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for collaborative use of the Safe System approach.  Well deserved.  They've significantly reduced road traffic fatalities on the George Price Highway.

"The Project, which was launched in 2013 with funding from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Government of Belize, received the commendation in the Road Safety Management category.  The Road Safety Project focuses on the corridor between Belize City and Belmopan, including Belmopan Ring Road.  Prior to 2013, this stretch of road accounted for almost 50 percent of all road traffic deaths in the country of Belize.  At the end of December 2015, this figure had fallen to less than 10 percent.

At the Awards, the Project was lauded for collaborative use of the Safe System approach.  Under this approach, road safety is considered to not only be about crash reduction, but also the prevention of death and serious injury.  The aim is to create a road system which can anticipate and accommodate human error, as well as provide effective post-incident care in the event of an accident."

Youth Empowerment Retreat pictures

Youth Empowerment Retreat pictures | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

There was a Youth Empowerment Retreat at Maya Mountain Lodge.  Great goals and great fun!

"High school youth from San Ignacio, Belmopan, and Belize City spent the holiday weekend together exploring, playing, serving, and learning.  The focus was on the power of youth to shape the coming century and envision a more peaceful country and world.  They studied the importance of looking within yourself and striving to be prejudice-free, honest, trustworthy, just, reliable, chaste, and a shining light no matter how dark things get around you.  The event was part of the Jr Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program sponsored by the Baha'is of Belize.  Maya Mountain Lodge generously offered their facilities for the event."
