The Belize Zoo makes someone's day

The Belize Zoo makes someone's day | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

We love the zoo!

"The Belize Zoo is unique in that all the animals are native to Belize and none are captured in the wild. They are all either abandoned pets or animals from other zoos or from movie sets. The zoo was damaged pretty significantly in Hurricane Richard in October 2010, but they have built most of it back up. Lots of cool cats - Leopards, Pumas, and the famous Jaguars - plus cool birds and other local animals, such as the tapir and coati. All in all - a great trip."

Great post on the Belize Zoo

Some good pictures of the zoo.  Funny.  Read why:

"The Belize Zoo has a camera policy to prevent professional photographers from taking proper photos unless they pay way too much to bring their cameras/zoom lenses in.  And they considered my Rebel with a really crappy entry-level zoom as 'professional' (heh), so they made me replace my crappy zoom lens with my (reasonably nice) 50mm while I was there."

"Belize Zoo - Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh No!"

"Belize Zoo - Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh No!" | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Zoo gets a superb mention on Yahoo.  It is the best little zoo in the world.  The Tropical Education Center gets the thumbs up too.  The last sentence nails it: "A central theme is that if we were all more attentive and practiced better conservation methods, perhaps zoos would not be necessary."

"But if you find yourself in Belize, I would encourage you to seek out the Belize Zoo.  It advertises itself as the "Best Little Zoo in the World."  Whether that's true or not, the claim is certainly not without merit...

Exotic animals abound, more than 150 in total, all indigenous to Belize.  Brightly colored reptiles and amphibians are showcased along with their more camouflaged kin.  Blue frogs and red hued snakes lurk silently behind glass, while crocodiles lay almost lifeless in pools of water.  And, new species are still being discovered annually...

As for the mammals, the large cats are definitely must sees.  Ocelots to jaguars are showcased.  I learned that a black panther was just the latter with a pigmentation disorder.  Tapirs and Howler monkeys may be less dangerous, but no less exotic.  It's quickly apparent on how close you can actually get to the animals.  Although secure, tourists' views are not hampered by moats or other large separation obstacles."

There's a great video about the Belize zoo at this site.  Just click the picture.

"The tapirs are neat and funny. They eat two buckets of fruit each morning. Their favorite zoo food is cucumbers.

The spider monkeys thought we were the zookeepers with food. That’s why they stood up in the trees for us."
