Video of the day.  Today might be World Water Day, but yesterday was Forest Day.  Check out the cool video the GoB made talking about it, and about planting trees.  Now's the best time...

'sustaWe seek to maintain a delicate balance between humans and wildlife, to ease the conflict in the competition of resources; and ensure the restoration of degraded ecosystems by replanting trees in areas that have been cleared, to recover ecosystem functions.  We continue our efforts of forest sustainability, for the benefit is passed down from our generation to the next.'

For Summer 2013 ISIS, the Institution for Sustainable International Studies, will be having a course on filming art, culture, and wildlife documentaries in Belize.

"This is an introductory course for students to learn how to tell a visual story, using video, on aspects of culture and nature history against the background of the neotropical country of Belize.  The knowledge gained and the practical field experience will be a valuable tool for students needing to promote future projects with powerful visual media. It will also provide core knowledge for those considering becoming professional documentary filmmakers in the fields of nature, local culture and biology.   The course is taught by Emmy(r) Award winning videographers, Carol and Richard Foster, and Danny Valesquez."

The Green Guide to Belize

The Green Guide to Belize  | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it
The Wanderlust magazine has a great online article about Belize, and since it focuses on sustainability and culture, Cayo is prominently covered. Xunantunich is all over the article, and Actun Tunichil Muknal is highlighted. Definitely worth a read, and they really made a nice online presentation of all the info.

'The San Antonio Women's Cooperative was started by a group of nine Maya women who came together to create sustainable economic opportunities for their community. By producing handcrafted textiles using traditional methods and natural dyes, they preserve their cultural heritage for future generations while also generating income...

Xunantunich, situated in the western Cayo District, offers panoramic views from its imposing main temple, El Castillo. Nearby, Caracol is the largest Maya site in Belize and features impressive architectural feats and a rich history of conflict with neighbouring states.'

Belize: A Leader In Sustainability

Belize: A Leader In Sustainability | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Forbes has a great article highlighting Belize, and its focus on sustainability.  It's highly Cayo centric, as it should be, without mentioning Cayo nor San Ignacio.  It explains how we have the cultural, culinary, and adventure tourism that makes for an unforgettable time.

'Belize is located in Central America, but it has a decidedly Caribbean feel, making it appealing for visitors who want to go snorkeling and diving in some of the most beautiful water in the world...Preserving their environment is not only the right thing to do, but it also makes good economic sense.

For example, to protect endangered species such as the jaguar, Belize is a partner of the Maya Forest Corridor, protecting landscapes from Belize’s Maya Mountains, through the tri-national Maya forest of Belize, Mexico, and Guatemala. This region is the most extensive continuous stretch of jungle in Central America.'

10 Reasons to Travel Sustainably

10 Reasons to Travel Sustainably | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great article that is highly informative on everything from the fact that close to 10%, up to $5 trillion, of the world's GDP is attributed to tourism.  Cayo is known for having many eco lodges, and many that focus on sustainability.  Make the world a better place, and think, live, and travel sustainably.

"People who operate sustainable businesses understand that well-trained, justly compensated staff members are loyal to their employer and often help improve a company’s efficiency.  Well-treated employees also provide excellent service, which is a key component of a great travel experience...  Your visits to historic and cultural sites help maintain these local treasures by giving the local community a reason—and the means—to protect them.  Plus, learning about the traditions and cultures of others is a great way to discover new things about you."

The Eco Kids have gotten presetations on Sustainability and Solid Waste Management while having a great time at their Summer camp.

"After finishing touches were put on the bracelets, campers lined up and marched to the Chaa Creek conference room, where Mr. Brion Young gave a presentation on the various ways to use environmentally friendly practices in everyday life.  Mr. Young highlighted several of the ways in which Chaa Creek recycles, such as using old cardboard boxes as mulch at the Maya Organic Farm, as well as giving campers advice on recycling at home."
