Resounding 'NO!' from People's Referendum mentioned on Huffington Post

Resounding 'NO!' from People's Referendum mentioned on Huffington Post | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Ted Danson discusses the People's Referendum, and the plight to stop oil exploration on the largest living barrier reef in the world.

"What the government underestimated, though, was the determination of Belize's people to be heard. In response to the government's referendum denial, Oceana Belize and the Coalition to Save Our Natural Heritage hosted a "People's Referendum" the week before the elections at over 51 polling stations with election judges. Almost 30,000 Belizeans turned out to cast their votes, with 96 percent of them voting no to offshore drilling. The message couldn't have been clearer."

Thanks to Marconi Leal for a great picture of the polling booth at Galvez Stadium.  He said it right: no politics here, vote against oil drilling on the reef.

"Belize was informed via the local media that the entire country of Belize was parceled out into petroleum concession blocks. These petroleum blocks covered sensitive ecosystems areas including the offshore/coastal-marine area and terrestrial protected areas, demonstrating government’s intent to allow exploration to be conducted throughout the country with little regard for sensitive ecosystems and natural resources, especially in areas already placed under some protective status."

Belize Votes Resounding "No" to Offshore Oil Drilling

Belize Votes Resounding "No" to Offshore Oil Drilling | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

96% of Belizeans that voted in yesterday's referendum voted against offshore oil drilling.

"The message could not be any clearer; Belizeans do not want Offshore Drilling in the country. This has been proven with the outcome of the People’s Referendum that asked the voting populace of Belize if they agreed with Offshore Drilling in the country. The voting took place on Wednesday, February 29, 2012.
Results from the People’s Referendum, organized by Oceana Belize and Belize Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage, indicate that 96% (28,208) voted NO, 4% (799) voted yes for Offshore Drilling out of a total of 29,235 overall voters."

How to Vote in The People’s Referendum

How to Vote in The People’s Referendum | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

"The People’s Referendum gives voice to the thousands of Belizeans who never got a chance to vote when the offshore referendum triggered under the Referendum Act and was derailed on the basis of unverifiable signatures. The unverified signatures were largely based on inconsistencies between signatures on the record cards at the Election and Boundaries Office and the signatures on the petition forms."

Peoples' Referendum to Stop Offshore Drilling is tomorrow

"Do note that the Blue whole is a National Monument and it is located in the lower southern portion of Lighthouse Reef (the one that looks like a sickle). Princess Petroleum is the oil company that has this concession area."

"The fact of the matter is, nevertheless, that the movement to stop oil drilling in Belize’s territorial seas was an energetic and emotional movement, and this is an issue which is not only romantic and sentimental where nature is concerned, there are hundreds of millions of dollars invested in Belize’s fishing and tourism industries which have to be skeptical, indeed nervous, about offshore drilling."

Vote at the Peoples' Referendum to Stop Offshore Drilling.

The Belize Tourism Industry Association is pleading for everyone to vote on February 29th at the Peoples' Referendum to Stop Offshore Drilling.  "Tourism accounts for 1 in 5 jobs in Belize.  Once they drill on the reef, Belize will be spoilt, and those jobs will go somewhere else."
