The Last Shaman

The Last Shaman | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Last Shaman is a documentary about Lucas Medina, who resides, and has a medicinal trail, in Bullet Tree Falls.  NMSU film students Alejandro Horcasitas and Neil Duran shot and edited the film while there were here last Summer.  You get a good feel for Bullet Tree in the video, as well as seeing some of the sights and the Mopan river.  It's cool how he gives thanks to the late Don Beto Cocom for teaching him all about medicinal plants, causing the culture to continue for future generations.  Well worth a watch.

Ámuñegü (In Times to Come)

Sounds inspiring!  Belize is getting another socially responsible documentary done.  Andy Palacio's amazing music will be the background for the documentary.

"Our project, Ámuñegü, a full length documentary film, is a story told through the eyes of two communities, Placencia and Seine Bight, trying to defend a balance they have maintained for generations. The Placencia Lagoon is home to many species and is the nursery for local fish stocks, manatees, rays and dolphins, and is also the livelihood of several regional communities including people of Garifuna, Creole and Mayan desent. In recent years, a rise in unregulated development has damaged much of the Lagoon. Our documentary will follow community leaders and fishermen who are trying to protect what makes Placencia unique, culturally rich and self-sustainable. We will share their story at film festivals internationally because we believe that their struggle is echoed in other communities around the world."

Carlton and Barbara, from Back to My Roots,  are featured in the documentary too, and Carlton explains how they put love, heart, and soul into their business model.  Ras A, the bushman, finishes the documentary by explaining life and farming in the bush.  Another great documentary.  Well done, Aaron!

In returning to the country of her birth and youth, she had to say good-bye to the country of her husband's birth, where she lived with him for many years until he sadly passed away when she was 60; her many friends who she became very close with over the years she spent there; and the lifestyle that she had become accustomed to for so many years."

The Garifuna Nation Documentary Trailer

Another great looking documentary in Belize.

"A feature-length video documentary, 'The Garifuna Nation,' presents a cultural
encounter between two distinct Afro-Caribbean experiences: Afro-Puerto Rican and Garinagu (also called Garifuna).  Through these two parallel perspectives, the video looks into how the slave experience has historically played itself out in different ways and how circumstances determine who we are today.  Having escaped the ravages of slavery in the Americas, a group of West Africans joined with Carib Indians to form the Garifuna culture that has survived for over 212 years -- on self-reliance, sacred spirit-possession practices and dance moves.  Now, the Garinagu people must face the challenge of interfacing western lifestyles and modern technology with the long-held values regarding their community."
