Xunantunich Frieze Highlights Maya Exhibit | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

A frieze from El Castillo at Xunantunich was the featured picture in Museum magazine, for their article covering the 'Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed' exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota.  Many other Maya artifacts from Belize are also in the exhibit.

"Check it out!  We are featured inside the Nov/Dec issue of the American Alliance of Museum's magazine 'Museum'."

The Jade Mask's Journey

The Jade Mask's Journey | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Jade Mask that was found at Cahal Pech and adopted by the SIRH is about to go on display at the Science Museum of Minnesota's Maya exhibit.  Thanks, Shauniece Heusner, Research & Education Officer at the Museum of Belize, for the great history of the mask.

"This mask was adopted by San Ignacio Resort Hotel from the Museum of Belize & House of Culture.  This mask was found at Cahal Pech along with 3 large jade celts and is dated to the Terminal Classic period around A.D. 800-900.  This amazing ancient Belize artifact is made of jade and shell and was used as a belt worn by a royal ruler along with the accompanying celts that were found.  Currently, both the mask and the celts are being installed in the Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed exhibition at the Science Museum of Minnesota, along with other pieces from the Belize National Collection.  The exhibition opens June 21st, 2013."

Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed

The Science Museum of Mineesota's exhibit on the Maya appropriately opened yesterday on the Summer Solstice.  They have a great video talking about the exhibit, and they feature Xunantunich and Caracol on it.  The exhibit features artifacts from Cahal Pech too.

"The Maya created one of the great civilizations of the ancient world.  Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed, opening June 21, 2013 at the Science Museum of Minnesota, explores ancient Maya society through the eyes of powerful kings and queens and the farmers, artisans, administrators, and craftsmen who supported the elite and made up the foundations of these ancient states.  The exhibition will feature artifacts from throughout the Maya world, interactive exhibits and evocative environments to make the lives of the Maya relevant, accessible, and approachable."

I believe the two major draws of the Mesoamerican civilizations is that one they achieved such amazing things without the wheel and that even today a significant portion of their footprint is yet to be discovered; still hidden from us in the rain forest.
