SHJC and UNG Hike Lamanai

SHJC and UNG Hike Lamanai | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Some Sacred Heart Junior College students met up with some students from the University of North Georgia who were studying abroad in Belize, and visited Lamanai.

"The following day, on Sunday May 12th, the university students traveled to the Lamanai Maya Site in the Orange Walk District, one of the main sites in the country and the largest in northern Belize.  There, the North Georgia students were met by students of Sacred Heart Junior College (SHJC) from the Cayo District.  Speaking to The San Pedro Sun, Vicky Novelo, Director of Student Services at SHJC, explained the purpose of the interaction between the two groups of students.  'Our students usually partner with other students from the US while here in Belize on different projects, mainly in the Cayo area.  The trip to Lamanai was more recreational and mainly to allow interaction and an exchange.  The interaction gives our students some exposure as to what other students from the US come to do in Belize.  It exposes them to doing more than just the academics and so it gets them involved in extracurricular activities that hopefully they can develop later on when they graduate,' explained Novelo."

Kurse a di Xtabai Movie Review

Kurse a di Xtabai Movie Review | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Kurse a di Xtabai, the movie made in Cayo earlier this year, is making its second round through Belize.  Here's the San Pedro Sun's review from when it was shown at the Paradise Theater on Ambergris Caye.  Matthew Klinck and Make-Belize Films are gearing up to shoot the next movie, 'Rice and Beans,' next month.

"Put simply, the movie featured first-time actors, so the acting could certainly use a bit of polish.  But still, for the first time ever in front of the camera, the young men and women certainly did well.  The soundtrack was beautiful, featuring the Garifuna drums and melodies, Maya sounds by Pablo Collado and more.  The setting, of course, was a great one – not that I’m biased or anything."

Benque Viejo del Carmen comes alive for the annual Benque Fiesta!

Benque Viejo del Carmen comes alive for the annual Benque Fiesta! | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The San Pedro Sun covered the Benque Fiesta.  They loved the fireworks show.

"It starts with the official opening ceremony at the Cancha Marshallek in Benque Viejo del Carmen.  Once the official ceremony is held and the fair is declared open by the Mayor of the town a truly spectacular show of fireworks, custom designed to mark the occasion provides a sparkling veil over Benque.  It is perhaps one of the most impressive fireworks display in the entire country of Belize, as far as I’m concerned – THE BEST!   I joined the hundreds of onlookers, visitors and residents on the open fields and enjoyed the impressive display.  Afterwards, I headed to explore the festival grounds, finding it filled with fun games and entertainment for the entire family."

Maya Flats and Tropic Air

Maya Flats and Tropic Air | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Tropic Air has been flying to Maya Flats airstrip, which is located halfway between Cayo and Benque, for 2 weeks now.  The terminal is very nice, as is the new service from one of Tropic Air's 12 planes.

The San Pedro Sun said it well: "This new flight brings the best of both worlds together; it is the surf and turf of Belize.  The plane lands on an unpaved run way, and as you step out of the plane, you are met with a most beautiful landscape that leaves you breathless.  Cayo District is considered to be one of the top beauties of the country – and she boasts greenery and mountainous regions that hide all manner of wonderful places to explore.  It is no wonder that Tropic Air has ventured deeper into the territory to make traveling and exploring easier for Belizeans and visitors alike!"

Happy Garifuna Weekend

Happy Garifuna Weekend | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Monday is Garifuna Settlement Day!  Have a fun and safe holiday, and have some sere and hudut if you can find it.  The San Pedro Sun has a great article on the Garifuna culture.

"Today, the modern Garinagu annually reenact that long historical journey when their ancestors landed as slaves to this region and intermarried with the Arawak Indians of the West Indies region.  This culture is vibrant and dominates the ethnic heart of the country with the month of November in Belize looking back at the past while celebrating the present rich traditions of these people.  Today, like many other ethnic groups the Garinagu struggle to keep their culture alive.  In recognition of the important Garinagu history in Belize the 19th of November is celebrated annually as National Garifuna Settlement Day countrywide with a public and bank holiday granted."

Enjoy the pride of Belize at the National Agriculture & Trade Show

Enjoy the pride of Belize at the National Agriculture & Trade Show | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

There's a picture of Olga's jellies in that album!  She makes the best jams in Belize, and every Saturday, except Agric, she's at Cayo's market.  The article is written from an islander's viewpoint, and was published in the San Pedro Sun.  Sounds like they had a great time.

"Two hours later and after various stops along the way, we arrived in Belmopan. At 10AM, the sun was not at its highest point and there was a nice, constant breeze. With heightened security at the gates, each individual was checked for weapons as a metal detector was moved along the body. Once cleared at security and the $5 entrance fee has been paid, the entire grounds are yours. This year the show was held on the 27th, 28th and 29th of April under the theme 'Agriculture creating greater business opportunities, a healthier population and a more robust economy.'"
