Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations start this weekend here in Cayo.  This Saturday is Garifuna exhibition day at the Cayo Welcome Center, and there will be food and drumming.  On Sunday there will be a procession from the Sacred Heart Church to the cemetary and a tribute to Mr. Vincent Ramos.  

 

On the 17th, the SISE House of Culture will be celebrating with a Garifuna exhibit, and there will be food and drumming. Punta Fest will be on the 18th at the Cayo Welcome Center.  There will be an early morning procession on the 19th, and then a parade.  Happy November!

San Ignacio also had a Stations of the Cross procession for Good Friday at Sacred Heart Church.  Patrick Jones was there to cover the event.

 

"The Sacred Heart Parish in San Ignacio town presented a most dramatic display of the Stations of the Cross.  The role of Christ Jesus was played by parish priest Reverend Lorenzo Exheveria.  By all accounts, it was a spectacular presentation."

John Pinelo, a brilliant teacher and mentor of 1000's, has passed away.  His funeral is tomorrow at 3:00pm at the Sacred Heart Church.  His wake is this evening.

 

"John Pinelo career teacher, principal and former BNTU President passed away at his home in San Ignacio this weekend at the age of 64.  He had been battling cancer for some years.  His family tells us Mr. John Pinelo was instrumental in molding the lives of many young Belizeans serving as either a teacher or principal for many of Belize's Schools including: Santa Elena R.C., Roaring Creek R.C., Sacred Heart Primary, Bullet Tree Falls R.C., Saint Francis Xavier R.C., Succotz R.C. and Sacred Heart College."

For the September Celebrations, in honor of George Price, Wednesday, September 19th is National Service Day.  There are quite a few events planned around Cayo.  There will also be a cadlelight vigil in the evening at the Sacred Heart Church.  What do you have planned for National Service Day?

Saved Musical

The Belmopan Choral Society is performing their 'Saved' musical, which will have Handel's Messiah and other gospel songs inspired from the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, around Cayo this weekend.  They'll be doing 2 shows tomorrow, Sunday, April 13th.  The first is at the Cayo Welcome Center, and will stat at 3:30pm, while the second is at the Sacred Heart Church, and will start at 5:00pm.  They'll also perform at St. Ann's Church on Monday.

Cancer Walk T-shirts

It's Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the San Ignacio Branch of the Belize Cancer Society is raising funds by selling t-shirts.  The shirts are only $20, and they go to a great cause.  You can get them at the BFLA office infront of Sacred Heart Church.  They are having a Cancer Walk on October 26th that will start in Esperanza, and end in Cayo.  Join the Paint Belize Pink campaign.

Elias Awe Wake and Funeral

Elias Awe, former civil servant, and champion of the Octavia Waight Centre, passed away yesterday.  There will be a wake tomorrow, and the funeral services will be at 2:00pm on Monday, at Sacred Heart Church.  The Awe's ask that instead of sending a wreath, that a donation be made to the Octavia Waight Centre instead.  RIP, Mr. Awe.
