Congratulations to all the graduates of the 1st Certificate in Early Childhood Education!  They officially received their diplomas, and are ready to change the world through education.  The program was run through Sacred Heart Junior College and Ecumenical Junior College.  Well done!

Cayo's Stepping Up ceremonies were last week, courtesy of the Ministry of Education.  One at Sacred Heart College for west Cayo, and one in Belmopan for east Cayo.  

 

"The tour continued today where San- Ignacio, Santa Elena and Benque Viejo students were awarded subsidy certificates. The Ministry of Education is determined to continue working with schools, principals and teachers to ensure all students have a fair opportunity at continuing their education. Follow us to see where the tour will take us tomorrow...

 

On Thursday, June 14th 2018, Minister of Education, Hon Patrick Faber along with Ministry Representatives and the Belmopan District Education Center distributed subsidy certificates to a total of 22 total schools(8 urban 14 rural) giving us a grand total of 485 students. During his meet and greet with the students, Minister Faber shared words of encouragement with the students and reminded them of the importance of continuing their education."

Congratulations, Kathian Jaun!  The Sacred Heart College student won the Ministry of Education's Education Showcase Theme contest.  She won $500 with her winning theme. 

 

"A big Congratulations going out to Kathian Juan and Sacred Heart College! The Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture visited Sacred Heart College yesterday where Kathian Juan was awarded her cash prize and certificate for submitting the winning theme for the 2017 Education Showcase.  Her prize was $500 cash prize sponsored by St. Anthony Trading Co. Look out later on for her inspiration behind the theme!"

The swearing in ceremony for the new group of Peace Corps volunteers was held at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel last week.  Welcome!


"Last Thursday, 150 Belizeans and Americans gathered in the conference center at the San Ignacio Hotel, to witness the swearing in of 17 new Peace Corps Volunteers.  Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, Youth & Sports representatives, including Dr. Ramon Figueroa, Director of Health Services and Dr. Carol Babb, Deputy Chief Education Officer, as well as District Health Educators, District Education Managers, Community Health Workers, Teachers, and Principals joined the U.S. Ambassador Carlos Moreno, community counterparts, training host families, Peace Corps staff, and members of the US diplomatic corps to witness the event and celebrate the milestone. "

The Junior Cross Country Cycling Classic was today,   The Cycling Federation of Belize has pictures of the winners accepting their trophies.  Congratulations to all racers!

"The Government of the Republic of Cuba, under the Belize/Cuba Government Scholarship Programme, is once again awarding scholarships to the Government of Belize.  The scholarship will allow qualifying Belizean students to enter the Escuela Latinoamericana de Ciencias Medicas (ELAM), in the city of Havana, Cuba, to pursue a medical degree...

"Creating Economic Prosperity in the Jewel – Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative - YLAI Professional 2018 Fellows!

The U.S. Embassy is proud to announce the 2018 cohort of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Professional Fellows Program from Belize. This program will take place in September-October and will bring 250 young leaders from 36 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to the United States.

Belize’s 2018 YLAI Fellows are: Lorcia Moore, owner and creator of Naturally Belize Coconut Products;
Mervin Budram, Jr., founder of TAS Belize Limited; Fatima Chi, founder of L3G's & Associates; and Kyle Kadeem Zuniga,
Developer, Creative Designer, and Marketer at BK Creative.

 

On September 17, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Keith Gilges hosted a networking event, themed “Building the YLAI Network—Creating Economic Prosperity in the Jewel,” introducing the 2018 YLAI cohort to previous participants, as well as representatives of the Government of Belize, local businesses, and non-profit organizations. Acting Prime Minister Patrick Faber delivered keynote remarks and engaged with the Fellows prior to their departure.

 

The five-week long YLAI Program, sponsored by U.S. Department of State, will place business and social entrepreneurs in small businesses, non-governmental organizations, and similar entities in 20 U.S. cities. The participants, hosted by U.S. organizations, will further develop their business or social venture plans, learn from their U.S. counterparts, and share best practices.

 

The 2018 YLAI Professional Fellows Program will begin on September 20 in Detroit, Michigan. Participants will then engage in four-week fellowships in cities throughout the country. The program will conclude with a Closing Summit in Washington, DC.

Congratulations to the 26 recipients of the Taiwanese scholarships!  They'll start studying in Taiwan for this Fall 2017 semester.  Study hard.  Thanks, Taiwan! 

 

"The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Belize-Taiwan ICDF Alumni Society (a.k.a. Taiwan Alumni Association) co-hosted 2017 Taiwan Scholarship Awarding Ceremony and Orientation for 26 scholarship recipients on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at Radisson Fort George Hotel. The scholarship recipients have been awarded scholarships respectively through the Taiwan ICDF Scholarship Program and the Taiwan Scholarship Program. A total number of 334 Belizeans have been granted scholarships to study in Taiwan until now.

 

H.E. Charles Liu, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mrs. Debbie Domingo, CEO of Ministry of Education congratulated all the scholarship recipients who have this opportunity to study and pursue their life goal in the near future and then presented scholarship packages to each recipient."

Feelgood news of the day.  The Friends for Conservation and Development have finished their Chiquibul Forest Outreach Campaign.  Over 6000 students were reached.  Thanks, FCD and PACT!  Protect the Chiquibul!

 

"The Beauty of the Chiquibul Forest Outreach Campaign has reached its project end.  A total of 28 communities, 44 schools, 250 teachers and 6,246 students benefited from the educational presentation throughout the Cayo District.  FCD is grateful to PACT, Principals, teachers, students and the Ministry of Education for their support."

20th Coca Cola Spelling Bee

The 20th annual Coca Cola Spelling Bee has been happening all around Belize.  Congratulations to Zone 3 finalists Rina Marcos(United Pentecostal) and Leighi Alvarado(Santa Elena), and Zone 5 finalists Sherman Matute(St. Jude's) and Shelby Gonzalez(St. Martin de Porres), who will all go to the district finals.  Great event; thanks, Coca Cola!  Best of luck to all!
