Wild Belize - Head West to Lower Dover Lodge

Wild Belize - Head West to Lower Dover Lodge | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Lower Dover Jungle Lodge got an excellent write up by Elaine Wilson, world famous travel blog writer, who just traveled all around Belize.  Xunanunich, one of the better local Maya sites, is recommended, as is Lower Dover's Swirly Head Wine.

"Lower Dover is a very special place to stay as it situated right on top of the ruins of a once great ancient Mayan city.  The site is extensive and only very partially excavated.  Students come every summer to continue the excavation, but there is so much still to be uncovered and so many stories still untold.  What happened to this once large and thriving city, which was probably a centre of trade and commerce, and what happened to the people who lived there?"

SHJC and UNG Hike Lamanai

SHJC and UNG Hike Lamanai | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Some Sacred Heart Junior College students met up with some students from the University of North Georgia who were studying abroad in Belize, and visited Lamanai.

"The following day, on Sunday May 12th, the university students traveled to the Lamanai Maya Site in the Orange Walk District, one of the main sites in the country and the largest in northern Belize.  There, the North Georgia students were met by students of Sacred Heart Junior College (SHJC) from the Cayo District.  Speaking to The San Pedro Sun, Vicky Novelo, Director of Student Services at SHJC, explained the purpose of the interaction between the two groups of students.  'Our students usually partner with other students from the US while here in Belize on different projects, mainly in the Cayo area.  The trip to Lamanai was more recreational and mainly to allow interaction and an exchange.  The interaction gives our students some exposure as to what other students from the US come to do in Belize.  It exposes them to doing more than just the academics and so it gets them involved in extracurricular activities that hopefully they can develop later on when they graduate,' explained Novelo."

Nohoch Che’en Sinkhole Expedition

Nohoch Che’en Sinkhole Expedition | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Check out one of the reports from the 14 day expedition that went into the Chiquibul Forest, and explored some of the natural beauty found there.  Tony and Therese Rath got some amazing pictures during the trip.  Check out the size of that sinkhole.  Well worth the read.

A 14 day expedition into the Chiquibul Forest of Belize to explore and document biological and geological diversity, find and map Maya sites and discover what exactly was at the bottom of the Holec sinkhole elicits contradictory emotions for a Belizean visiting the Chiquibul for the first time.

A Glimpse of Belize in HD

The Belize Tourism Board has posted a video from Travel and Leisure that's all about Belize.  Cayo is all over it, from the Blue Hole to Big Rock Falls, to Caracol.  They have some good video from ziplining, hiking in the jungle, cave tubing, and horseback riding.  It's a well done video, and was shot in high definition.

"Belize, the only English-speaking country in Central America, offers a unique combination of richly, rewarding experiences that make it unlike any destination on the planet.  Swim with the exotic sea life along the Western Hemisphere's largets barrier reef. Explore the fascinating mysteries of the largest concentration of Maya sites in the region."
