Walk for a Green Belize 2017

Walk for a Green Belize 2017 | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Another successful Walk for a Green Belize.  Betta No Lita!  Keep it clean and green!  A huge thanks to the 1000's of people that cleaned all along the George Price Highway last week.

They picked up over 5 tons of trash!

"While we love doing whatever it takes to keep our environment healthy and clean, we really wonder what it will take to STOP humans from throwing garbage out on the road side?
What we found tons of: plastic bags, plastic bottles, soda cans, straws, styrofoam containers/cups and more. Particularly disturbing: entire bags of trash or diapers dumped on the roadside.
Please respect the environment:

Our highways are no dump site! Garbage kills wildlife and pollutes the environment we humans depend on. So the simple things you can do to save wildlife, and yourself? Dispose properly of your garbage and try to produce as little waste as possible (use cloth bags instead of plastic, say no to straws, avoid styrofoam containers, use water bottles and recycle them instead of shilling bags to just list a couple of thoughts)."

The IDB is giving Belize a grant of over a million dollars to help with feasibility studies for improving the George Price Highway.  It might take a long time to finish, but it's a start.  Thanks, IDB!  This is part of the short term strategy Belize has, targeting four main areas: education, tourism, transport, and trade and tax policy.

"IDB provides US$540,000 Grant to Belize for George Price Highway Project Preparation Studies.  The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of Belize today signed a grant agreement for US$540,000 to support the preparation of feasibility studies and social and environmental assessments for the rehabilitation of 32 miles of the George Price Highway between Belmopan and Benque Viejo del Carmen."

Road Safety Project Receives Prince Michael Safety Award

Road Safety Project Receives Prince Michael Safety Award | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Road Safety Project has received a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for collaborative use of the Safe System approach.  Well deserved.  They've significantly reduced road traffic fatalities on the George Price Highway.

"The Project, which was launched in 2013 with funding from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Government of Belize, received the commendation in the Road Safety Management category.  The Road Safety Project focuses on the corridor between Belize City and Belmopan, including Belmopan Ring Road.  Prior to 2013, this stretch of road accounted for almost 50 percent of all road traffic deaths in the country of Belize.  At the end of December 2015, this figure had fallen to less than 10 percent.

At the Awards, the Project was lauded for collaborative use of the Safe System approach.  Under this approach, road safety is considered to not only be about crash reduction, but also the prevention of death and serious injury.  The aim is to create a road system which can anticipate and accommodate human error, as well as provide effective post-incident care in the event of an accident."

Belize Shows the Caribbean How to Better Manage Waste Products

Belize Shows the Caribbean How to Better Manage Waste Products | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize's new Solid Waste Management Project has made Cayo cleaner.  The SWMP is the reason Cayo has a great transfer station now on the way to Benque.

"To this date, the project has resulted in the construction of a modern sanitary landfill at Mile 24 of the George Price Highway, Belize’s main highway connecting Belize City with the capital, Belmopan, and San Ignacio near the border with Guatemala.  This new landfill, which began operations in August of 2013, is already benefitting the towns of Belize City, San Ignacio, Santa Elena and Benque Viejo.  Dumpsites have been closed and replaced with transfer stations, from where solid waste is being transferred to the Mile 24 Sanitary Landfill."

Nicole Kearsch's curator insight, September 29, 2014 1:27 PM

Not only is Belize working towards a better environment with the implementation of transfer stations instead of actual dumpsites on the island but it is working to keep the beauty of the islands intact.  While the islands off Belize are quite close to the coral reefs the fact that there is garbage being burned here is scary.  The effects that the smoke has on the reef are potentially endless.  People see this too as they leave from snorkeling and vacationing and miss out on the view that is to be had.  They also make note of the disgusting atmosphere that they were around while enjoying the sights on the island.

Nicholas Patrie's curator insight, December 17, 2014 7:42 PM

Glad to see that countries share ideas to help make them both better for the environment and better to live in. With landfills that were once dumps and turning them into places that recycle helps everyone who lives around there and makes it better for the long run in other countries.
