Great eye-opening video about the poaching of scarlet macaw chicks in the Chiquibul. Dr. Isabelle from the BWRC and FCD Director Manzanero are interviewed in the mini-documentary. Protect the Chiquibul! Â 'WIth only 150 mating pairs of Scarlet Macaws in Belize, this population of birds is on the edge of extinction. The vigilance of the FCD Rangers protecting these birds and chicks from poachers is the most important job to keep the population from total collapse.'

Congratulations, Dr. Isabelle Paquet Druand! Dr. Isabelle received the Yves Rocher Foundattion's award for women for her work with wildlife through the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic. There's a video(in French), and pictures from the awards ceremony, which took place in France. Anyone who knows Dr. Isabelle knows this is a well deserved award.

Feelgood news of the day. The BWRC teamed up with Scarlet Six and FCD to go check on the Scarlet Macaws in the Chiquibul Forest. Dr. Isabelle Pacquet Durand gives a wonderful account of the trip to do some check ups.
"Muddy holidays with grey skies in Belize aside... 2013 has been an incredible year! One blog could not summarize it. So, as done in many regards during this year, I shall focus on individual, positive activities. The world seems full of bad news and negativity and I believe this rarely leads to positive outcomes. They had a very successful weekend of free spay and neuter clinics, seeing 100's of dogs and cats. Shelly Marin got some great pictures of the doctors and their clients. Thanks to all that made this happen!

This is a great example of a shelter making it extremely easy to adopt a pet. Taking away the cost of a spay/neuter and other vet needs makes the animal practically free initially, unlike pets from the pet store. Spaying o neutering your pet is the only way to being preventing the overpopulation issues.

Daniel Velazquez has the trailer out for his new documentary entitled 'Animals People and Care.' Now that's a cool trailer, and it has a funny twist to it. The focus is the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic, and Dr. Isabelle Paquet Durand's efforts at getting it to what it is today.

A really well done video about the spider monkey that was rescued and rehabilitated at the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic. By chance, it all started on the day of their inauguration, so Daniel Velazquez was already there to film the event. Izzie has been at Wildtracks for a while, and has been re-evaluated at the BWRC. She needs special surgery, and they've set up a website where you can donate money to help, where they've reached 86% of what they need. Thanks, Wildtracks!

Danny Chung got some great shots at the Belize Wildlife Conservation Network's inauguration this morning. Thanks go out to the San Ignacio Resort Hotel for all their donations and help with the BWRC, and for donating some delicious food for the event. Congratulations, DR. Isabelle on a dream come true!

The program of events commenced with the National Anthem performed by the Cayo Music School. Dr. Isabelle Paquet Durand, a Wildlife Veterinarian, Educator and Consultant and who is also the Founder and Director of the Clinic delivered the Welcome , Mission Objectives as well as the note of thanks. The Inauguration Address was done by Honorable LIselle Alamilla who also did the honor of cutting the ribbon."

The Cayo Film Festival was this weekend, and it was another impressive cultural event at the Cayo Welcome Center. They screened the documentaries from the Belize Documentary Film Field Course, along with Kurse a di Ixtabi, it's documentary, Creative Kaos, and many more. "Check this out! First ever CAYO FILM Festival. Great job Daniel Velazquez! Short films from Richard and Carol Farneti Foster and Ilana Lapid's NMSU's Creative Media students are being shown - as well as other films like Charles Britt and Roni Martinez' Scarlet Six project, Isabelle Paquet-Durand's wildlife medicine clinic, and Matt's feature-length "Curse of the Ixtabi". So...incredibly...cool. "

Matthew Valdovinos, one of the NMSU film school students that did the Belize study abroad documentary film course, has released the documentary about the Green Iguana Conservation Project. It starts out with Humberto Requena and Eddy Estrada defining what the project does. Interesting fact: the San Ignacio Resort Hotel has been able to raise the survival rate from around 6% to around 60% in the hatchery.
Daniel Velazquez, one of the cofounders of the project explains how the project is sustainable, so it will stand the test of time, and shows some footage from the project in 1999. The documentary also has interviews with Miriam Roberson and the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic's Dr. Isabelle Paquet Durand, and if you ever wanted to know how to clean an iguana, you can learn it by watching. This video is well worth the watch.

The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic paid a visit to the Green Iguana Conservation Project to give the iguanas their regularly scheduled check-ups. Dr. Isabelle, along with Dr. Maas and a few interns worked their magic, while Daniel Velazquez captured some great pictures. The BWRC celebrated their one year anniversary yesterday. Congratulations, BWRC, and thanks for all you do for the wildlife of Belize!

Great story about the Howler Monkey that was hit by a car, and saved by the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic a month ago. It chronicles the story from the day of the accident to this week. Dr. Isabelle and her team at the BWRC saved Mia, and she's been rehabilitating at Wildtracks ever since. She'll be released into the wild later this year.
"Mia was later taken to the Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic where the medical team discovered that she had suffered severe head trauma in the accident. Dr. Isabelle and her team administered stabilization treatment, fluid therapy and intensive care for several days. On February 6th, she was placed on board a Lighhawk flight en route to Wildtracks, a manatee and primate rehabilitation center in the village of Sarteneja, run by Paul Walker, a zoologist, and his wife, Zoe, to undergo careful rehabilitation. Several weeks later, Valerie called Paul to check on Mia's progress."

Daniel Velazquez has a touching video out from the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic's inauguration. Right after the ceremony, a confiscated baby monkey was delivered to the clinic. Dr. Isabelle Paquet Durand did her thing, and you can see her use the x-ray machine that the Heska grant money was used to purchase. True wildlife medicine at work. Thank you, BWRC, for all you do for the wildlife of Belize!
