A Belizean Adventure

Video of the day.  Great GoPro video of a trip around Belize.  The time lapse photography at Caracol is done well.  The first half of the video is Cayo, and you'll see plenty of familiar sights.  The Hawkesworth Bridge is on there, and Rio On Pools, along with Caves Branch, and the Waterfall Cave.

"We tackled the muddy roads, steep stairs, deep caves, and coral reefs of San Ignacio, Caracol, Caves Branch, Caye Caulker, and Ambergris Caye."

Australian Argues Ambergris

Australian Argues Ambergris | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Funny of the day.  'An Aussie Strikes Back,' very comically, at Ambergris being named the best island in the world by Trip Advisor.  Classic!

"Hang on, hang on – as a loyal reader of the Chaa Creek Belize Travel Blog, I just read your recent post about Ambergris Caye being voted by this mob calling themselves Trip Advisor as the best island in the world. Fair enough, the place is lovely. Stunning in fact.  In the post they do rabbit on about the Belize Great Barrier Reef, and as a fair dinkum Aussie you’ll forgive me for being partial to our own Great Barrier Reef, but to each their own, live and let live, I say.  And, to be honest, both reefs are pretty similar, ours just being a tad bigger.  But then, not a few clicks later I come across an online Travel Weekly article, “Australia snubbed in islands awards” and you could have knocked me over with a feather."

Belize Fashion Week

Belize Fashion Week | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo was represented well during the Belize Fashion Week out on Ambergris Caye.  Ambergris Today was there to capture some of the show.  They have a 40 minute video they've posted to their site, along with 100's of pictures.  You can see Joris Hendrik, Gabriela Barerra, and their models showing off their designs on the catwalk.

"With the success of Belize Fashion week, it is evident that it will open new doors for Belize designers and models and help prepare them to represent Belize.  It will also place Belize in the fashion spotlight and create new opportunities in the industry and quite possibly overflow in the tourism industry by attracting more visitors to the country during future events.  And the bottom line is that we have solidified the fact that Belize has fantastic talent in the fashion industry and Belize Fashion Week is a great engine that will help put Belizean fashion designers and models on the global map."

Yoga Retreat in Cayo

Yoga Retreat in Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo Review and Pictures

Cayo Review and Pictures | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great photos from around Cayo can be seen on this review.  Where exactly they stayed, we're not sure, but they loved it, and it is beautiful.

"The first two days we stayed in the jungle near San Ignacio in the most darling little cabin
and the second part of the trip we took a water taxi to Ambergris Caye and lounged on the little island.  It was a lovely trip.  We spent hours laying in hammocks, and took afternoon naps during the most delirious of rainstorms.  We went jungle hiking, and climbed old mayan ruins from civilizations hundreds and hundreds of years old.  We saw monkeys and wandered islands, holding hands like newlyweds."

Western Ballaz Play Tiger Sharks

Western Ballaz Play Tiger Sharks | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Western Ballaz had a working vacation on Ambergris Caye, where they played the Tiger Sharks.  They didn't win, but had a great time visiting.  They are now tied for first place.  They host the Belize City No Limit this Friday at Sacred Heart College.  The first game, between SHC and Benque will start around 6:00pm.

"The Western Ballaz took a fun trip out to San Pedro to plat the Tiger Sharks.  They didn't win, but learned a lot about poor sportsmanship from the other team.  It was a great first half, with pretty much an even score, and it was tied in the 3rd quarter.  Too bad the other team used underhanded tactics(literally pulling down our players shorts during the game).  It was great that the young kids got to play between the quarters.  Future pros in the making.  The Ballaz are tied for first place now.  They host the Belize City No Limit this Friday in Cayo."

Ambergris Named Best Island in the World

Ambergris Named Best Island in the World | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Ambergris Caye won Trip Advisor's Travelers' Choice Award for Best Island in the World...again!  This is the second year in a row that they've won.  Belize - Cayo too, of course - in general gets higher reviews from travellers that use Trip Advisor.  Congratulations, Ambergris!  Be sure and let your guests know that the jungle awaits them.

"For the second year in a row, Ambergris Caye takes top honors.  The beautiful Belize island offers the perfect blend of modern development and laid-back tranquility.  A mangrove swamp is the eye of this white beach island, the largest in Belize, and golf carts are the main form of transportation along the sandy roads.  Reef divers drool over the Belize Barrier Reef and the Blue Hole, a 400-feet deep circle of limestone that teems with angelfish, elkhorn coral, cleaner shrimp and stalactites."

Iguanas and Termites at the SIRH

Iguanas and Termites at the SIRH | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The San Pedro Scoop came to Cayo to see the iguanas at the Green Iguana Conservation Project at the SIRH.  They loved it, of course.

"Though you might not know it by just driving by, the San Ignacio Hotel Resort sits on quite a few acres of really beautiful jungle leading down to the Macal River. There are plenty of trails but you are going to want to get one of the hotel guides to lead you a 3 minute walk to the Green Iguana Project...

A very cool program initiated by the hotel to educate guests, Belizeans and especially children about this native animal and how they (especially the 'shes') need to be protected in the wild.  Green iguanas are purely vegetarian (unlike the more common 'Wish Willys' on Ambergris Caye) and considered good eats in Belize…they are often referred to as 'Bamboo Chicken'."

Kurse a di Xtabai Movie Review

Kurse a di Xtabai Movie Review | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Kurse a di Xtabai, the movie made in Cayo earlier this year, is making its second round through Belize.  Here's the San Pedro Sun's review from when it was shown at the Paradise Theater on Ambergris Caye.  Matthew Klinck and Make-Belize Films are gearing up to shoot the next movie, 'Rice and Beans,' next month.

"Put simply, the movie featured first-time actors, so the acting could certainly use a bit of polish.  But still, for the first time ever in front of the camera, the young men and women certainly did well.  The soundtrack was beautiful, featuring the Garifuna drums and melodies, Maya sounds by Pablo Collado and more.  The setting, of course, was a great one – not that I’m biased or anything."

Kurse of the Xtabai On Tour

Reef TV caught up with a multitude of people that caught the showing of Cayo's Kurse a di Xtabai at the Paradise Theater on Ambergris Caye.  Not only did everyone have rave reviews, but he interviewed Matthew Klinck, and it looks like Make-Belize Films will be doing quite a few more movies, and they'll be getting attention all over.

"2012: Kurse a di Xtabai is a Creole-language supernatural thriller and the first feature length dramatic movie to be entirely produced in Belize.  It was directed and produced by Matthiew Klinck and selected as the opening night movie of the 2012 Belize International Film Festival."
