Our guest is Reverend Danny Nemu, historian and author. He talks to us about drugs in the bible – and how priests used them to induce divine visions. It’s surprising how many natural substances mentioned in the bible are psychoactive, and were almost certainly used for their mind-altering properties. We also discuss how drug stigma has changed since biblical times, and what it means for the future of psychedelics.
Dr. Salvador Roquet was a Mexican pioneer in psychedelic psychotherapy. He began his medical career in the field of public health and later became a psychiatrist; he started to use mind-altering substances as an adjunct to psychotherapy in 1967. His psychedelic sessions lasted about eight hours and included patients taking such substances as LSD, ketamine, psilocybin mushrooms, and ololiuqui seeds (morning glory seeds) such as Rivea corymbosa and Ipomea violacea. Salvador was widely acclaimed for developing a series of innovative therapeutic methods for using these substances. Yet, in today’s world of psychedelic psychotherapy, he is relatively unknown. Let me share some of his story with you.
I am excited to invite you all to come join us at Psychedelic Science 2017, a conference co-hosted by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and the Beckley Foundation this April, in Oakland. The Psychedelic Science 2013 conference sold out with 1,800 attendees; this year, we expect nearly 2,200. This means it will be among the largest psychedelic conferences ever.
Known to produce profound changes in sensory perception, mood, and thought, DMT is commonly smoked using crystal vaporizing methods, or blended with other herbs, as in “changa”.1 Whether explained as travails through parallel universes, odysseys in other dimensions, or journeys to the psychic antipodes, the vicissitudes of travel are implicit to DMT hyperspace, the passage through which is often embraced as a “breakthrough” experience. Like returned travellers, “psychonauts” familiar with this experience report passage into a “space” that may be shockingly alien or uncannily familiar, and possesses a deep quality of reality or realness.
A passage in Lao Tze’s Tao Te Ching states that when original harmony was lost, laws were created. I am sure that this is congruent with our contemporary knowledge of prehistory: We were equalitarian at the time when we were nomadic hunter-gatherers, while our modern political institutions of legislation and justice fail to give us justice or well being. Thus, it would seem that we should interest ourselves very much in that “original harmony” that our laws seek in vain to restore.
Participating in an ayahuasca ceremony is an opportunity for deep healing and personal development. There is potential for healing of the body, mind and spirit, reconciliation with oneself and others, revelatory spiritual experiences, and much more.1 Fortunately, there are preparatory and in-ceremony practices that can help maximize the experience and related benefits. There are also habits that seem to hinder and narrow this work, which can be avoided. What follows here are suggestions to optimize your experience.

I have heard many, many accounts from people who have had challenging, confusing, and straight out traumatic experiences. Part of that is our filter, I get that. Some of us are so lost in our stories of trauma, we project them on everyone we meet.
But there are some seriously rogue "healers" out there, and this deserves to be called out.

Ayahuasca ceremonies have been recognized as both religious and therapeutic experiences by their practitioners for millennia. Today, research with this extraordinary visionary brew from the Amazon is beginning to uncover how this traditional plant medicine may be incorporated into modern medicine, facilitating the meeting of two distinct cultural modes of healing.
Face-eating zombies, bulletproof criminals, and rampant death of all involved. These seem to be among the most common media stories floated around when discussing newly discovered or emerging drugs. There is a reason for this: sensationalized media seems to sell. As some media ebbs from respected journalism to the blogosphere, these reports may be occurring more frequently. Within criminology and sociology, there is even a term to describe such media events: “moral panic,” which is used to describe a media overreaction to a seemingly mundane, or at least exaggerated, event.1
Ibogaine, like other psychedelics, such as MDMA, ayahuasca, and psilocybin, has been shown to have important medicinal values. It is extracted from an African root and, besides its powerful mind-altering effects, it really appears to help people to quit drug abuse, sometimes after a single session, or, in less successful cases, helps stabilizing their use. This appears to happen with opiates, stimulants like cocaine and crack cocaine, alcohol, and even with process addictions, like gambling or eating disorders. For example ibogaine commonly stops cravings and withdrawal symptoms of opiate addiction in around 24–36 hours.
The ALIUS Bulletin is an annual publication featuring in-depth interviews with prominent scholars working on consciousness and its altered states (ASCs). The goal of the Bulletin is to present a clear outline of current research on ASCs across a variety of disciplines, with an emphasis on empirical work. It also aims at dispelling the widespread stigma that still plagues the notion of ASC, while allowing a wider audience to discover rigorous scientific work on the topic presented by authors in their own words.

It throws you body into a state where it can do little else other than vomit and crap and while your brain vividly hallucinates. But it’s that level of potency that makes the ayahuasca drug so important in South American spiritual medicine. Ayahuasca, also known as yage, is a blend of the ayahuasca vine and the chacruna shrub containing dimethyltryptamine or DMT: a hallucinogen. It is created by macerating and boiling the components. The thick, brown brew is then drunk. This process has been repeated for hundreds of years in search of spiritual awakening.
