In this paper, I examine a type of shamanic song called Icaro, found in Western Amazonian indigenous and mestizo communities. I discuss the acquisition and use of these shamanic songs to communicate with spirits and to effect change in the material world. then, using the theory of phyto semiotics in conjunction with new research into plant communication, I show how the process of shamanic apprenticeship and the acquisition of Icaros is a form of inter-species communication in which the apprentice intercepts and interprets the phytochemical signals inherent in plant communicative processes

The notions of modernity and indigeneity are both hotly debated and highly controversial . In the classical modernist understanding, these terms are marked by a hierarchical opposition and an inscribed evolutionary teleology in which a pre-modern tradition is progressively replaced by modernity. Indigenous peoples have been cast as ideal types representing modernity’s fading pre-modern Other. Ayahuasca, an entheogenic beverage endemic to the Amazon, has been utilized by indigenouspeoples in the region for hundreds of years for a wide range of purposes. Recently however, thisbeverage has entered into the Occidental consciousness, becoming a facet of Western popularculture and triggering a surge in tourism to the region. As this trend in tourism has grown overthe past sixty years, ayahuasca has become increasingly commoditized and delocalized as itcirculates on a global scale. Likewise, a number of scholars have critiqued the practice of ayahuasca tourism, labeling many practitioners as charlatans and tourists as “drug” users. Inorder to investigate this phenomenon and provide a deeper anthropologically informed critique, Idraw upon ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2007 and 2008 in the far Western PeruvianAmazon. Utilizing field data and a review of the extant literature, I argue that the vast majorityof shamans participating in ayahuasca tourism rely on an ontology based upon the notions of mimesis and alterity, which in turn structures their practice and experience. Underscoring thepolitical economy of its use, I conclude by problematizing ayahuasca tourism’s uncertain future
