Worm 'Brain' Uploaded Into Lego Robot By Jason Dorrier on singularityhub - #innovation | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Can a digitally simulated brain on a computer perform tasks just like the real thing?

For simple commands, the answer, it would seem, is yes it can. Researchers at the OpenWorm project recently hooked a simulated worm brain to a wheeled robot. Without being explicitly programmed to do so, the robot moved back and forth and avoided objects—driven only by the interplay of external stimuli and digital neurons.

Tiny robots that work together like ants could lead to a new way to manufacture complex structures and electronics.

Someone glancing through the door of Annjoe Wong-Foy’s lab at SRI International might think his equipment is infested by ants. Dark shapes about a centimeter across move to and fro over elevated walkways: they weave around obstacles and carry small sticks. ...

Mann gegen Maschine - Ulf Hoffmann Tischtennis Roboter (UHTTR-1)

After 2 years of development, we are very happy ad proud to present our DIY ping pong robot UHTTR-1, which is currently only able to play in passive mode.

Its a coincidence that the german company Kuka released a similar concept at the same time in relation with the german professional tabletennis player Timo Boll. We are also very excited about their ping pong robot and the concept that stands behind it.

Nanomotors that are controlled, for the first time, inside living cells

Nanomotors that are controlled, for the first time, inside living cells | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Penn State University chemists and engineers have, for the first time, placed tiny synthetic motors inside live human cells in a lab, propelled them with ultrasonic waves, and steered them magnetically.

The Penn State nanomotors are the closest so far to a “Fantastic Voyage” concept (without the miniature people).

The nanomotors, which are rocket-shaped gold rods ~300 nanometers in diameter and ~3 microns long, move around inside the cells, spinning and battering against the cell membrane.

The nanomotors are activated by resonant ultrasound operating at ~4 MHz, and show axial propulsion as well as spinning.

Tardigotchi - an artwork by SWAMP and Tiago Rorke

Tardigotchi is an artwork featuring two pets: a living organism and an alife avatar. These two disparate beings find themselves the unlikely denizens of a portable computing enclosure. The main body for this enclosure is a brass sphere, housing the alife avatar in an LED screen and the tardigrade within a prepared slide. A tardigrade is a common microorganism measuring half a millimeter in length. The alife avatar is a caricature of this tardigrade, its behaviour is partially autonomous, but it also reflects a considerable amount of expression directly from the tardigrade’s activities (like eating).

Astounding Dexterity of Honda’s Dancing Humanoid Robot

Astounding Dexterity of Honda’s Dancing Humanoid Robot | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Even in today’s rapidly evolving world of technology, there are few things that make your jaw drop when you see them in real life. Honda’s ASIMO is one of those things.

When you witness this bipedal humanoid robot hopping in a circle on one foot, taking a few steps back to line up a kick to a soccer ball, or transitioning smoothly from a walk to a slow jog, you have to remind yourself that you’re not looking at a person in a robot suit or some sort of computer-generated special effect. This is an autonomous mechanical being, capable of walking around on two legs and making its own decisions based on input from its sensors. Its name, an acronym that stands for “Advanced Step In Innovative Mobility,” appropriately evokes Isaac Asimov. ...

The design studio, acquired last year by Google and best known for its work on the film Gravity, specializes in robots for use in movies, architecture, and digital fabrication.

Behind a small cafe in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood stands an unmarked warehouse where the future of human-machine interaction is taking shape. Inside this sprawling maze of soundstages, machine shops, and computer labs, artists collaborate with engineers, cinematographers brainstorm with coders, and everyone has a collegial relationship with the small army of industrial robots stationed here. This is Bot & Dolly, a boutique design studio that specializes in combining massive mechanical arms with custom software for movies, architecture, digital fabrication, and entertainment installations. “We’re a culture of makers, of creators with open minds,” says Tobias Kinnebrew, Bot & Dolly’s director for product strategy. “We work on things that don’t seem possible and try to make them possible.” ...
