The 3D Printed Osteoid from Deniz Karasahin

The 3D Printed Osteoid from Deniz Karasahin | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Animal and clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound stimulation (LIPUS) in the acceleration of the normal healing process of bone fractures, so industrial designer Deniz Karasahin decided to make use of that process.

Karasahin created his Osteoid, a custom-fitted, 3D printed medical cast with an attachable LIPUS bone stimulator system.

The design for the cast was based on a clinical trial of sixty-seven closed or grade-I open fractures of the tibial shaft. Karasahin decided to incorporate the ultrasound stimulating device as an adjunct to conventional treatment with a decidedly old-school method – the cast. ...

EM ("ElectroMagnetic") table by Florian Dussopt

an experimental object able to produce a localised electromagnetic field when switched on. This field lights up fluorescent tubes within a short range without any physical contact. The EM table allows the user to interact with an energy that is otherwise invisible.

An electronic circuit is embedded in the table and turns a low current into an electromagnetic field, acting directly on the gas within the fluorescent tube. It is advised that electronic devices should be kept away when the table is switched on. This research aims at exploring less known aspect of energies, electromagnetic possibilities and new interactions.

Techniques & Technologies in Morphogenetic Design - M. Hensel, A. Menges, M. Weinstock

Techniques & Technologies in Morphogenetic Design - M. Hensel, A. Menges, M. Weinstock | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

This issue of AD introduces a new approach to architectural practice based on the interrelationship of emergence and self-organisation concepts. A sequence to the successful Emergence: Morphogenetic Design Strategies title by the same guest-editors, it advances on the previous publication by taking on board the latest developments for fully integrated design evolution, manufacturing and construction.

Emergence requires the recognition of architectural structures not as singular and fixed bodies, but as complex energy and material systems that have a lifespan, exist as part of the environment of other active systems, and as an iteration of a series that proceeds by evolutionary development. Thus the focal point of this issue will be the exploration of techniques and technologies that enable the implementation of such morphogenetic strategies, requiring a new set of intellectual and practical skills. Though the publication stands alone as an investigation and presentation of cutting-edge techniques and technologies within the design and construction field supported by examples from adjacent industries, it also introduces a new springboard for understanding and rethinking the radical changes in which architecture is now being conceived, designed and produced. While representing a timely exploration of the embedding of techniques and technology in an alternative design approach, it also presents wholly new strategies for tackling issues of sustainability.

bcl - artistic research framework - art, biology and design / Shiho Fukuhara & Georg Tremmel | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The BCL is an artistic research framework that aims to explore the relations, congruences and différances of biological and cultural codecs through artistic interventions, social hacking and basic research. BCL is interested in the relationship between art and science in general, and between media art and bio science in particular. The interest is not so much in the new possibilities of artistic expressions, that the emerging biotechnologies make possible, but rather in the social implications that the widespread adoption and application of biotechnology will create. The research of the BCL is speculative and forward-looking, whereas the projects are firmly situated in the present social context and current climate. The projects aim not to be simply answers to real problems, but rather aim to be explorations of the context and systems behind the artistically and socially relevant issues.

From the whiff of your first pet to the smell of that seaside holiday, the Madeleine captures the scent of your memories

With the one-click simplicity of Flickr and Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, recording our memories has never been easier. But with such ease has come overload. More than seven billion photos are added to Facebook every month, while 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. We are drowning in a sea of hastily snapped images, our entire existence flattened into a scrolling feed of frozen frames.

"We take pictures of everything and load it all online, to the point where it is all infinitely replicable and disposable," says designer Amy Radcliffe, whose MA project at Central Saint Martins set out to bring a more meaningful sensory dimension to storing our favourite memories. ...

Surfaces that use "hacked" bacteria to detect dirt or clean themselves

Design student Tashia Tucker has created a series of conceptual surfaces with embedded bacteria that could be programmed to react to biological stimuli, including a floor that detects dust and dirt.

The surfaces are based on technology that enables the DNA of living cells to be manipulated synthetically to create programmable biological systems that perform a defined function, such as changing colour or oscillating when they come into contact with certain materials.

Imagine surfaces start to communicate with you. Your mobile gets goose skin when your lover texts you. Your WiFi controller changes the look and feel of it's surface according to different game situations. Your sofa gives you a short massage as a warm welcome when you return home from a hard day of work. Your laptop feels dried out when battery status is getting low.

.fluid is a concept study of an interacting, changing surface. While getting Input from the hands of its spectators, it's surface changes from liquid to solid, from plain to three-dimensional symmetric patterns. It provokes you to get in touch with it, to play with it's open interface and to collaborate with other people to find out how far you can push it.

This object was the result of the two week project »Talk to me – Form follows mood« supervised by Prof. Andreas Muxel at KISD (Köln International School of Design).
