Prices are up eight percent in Lakeshore since last summer, but down around most of the rest of the city. Is the lake really a hot commodity, or is it just lingering on the shores of previous highs a bit longer before the tide goes out?

Los Angeles remained the 7th most expensive city for renters in the nation, with one bedroom units priced at a median of $1,970, and two bedroom units at $2,900.

In this edition of the Zumper National Rent Report, our rent analysis has been expanded to include the 100 largest cities in the US by population.

We just released our National Rent Report for July. Some of our top findings include:
-San Francisco's median 1BR rent dropped 2.2% to $3,510 in June, while 2BRs dropped 0.6% to $4,770.
-Median 1BR rent in NYC dropped 1.8% to $3,190. This is still a net increase of 2.9% since June of 2015.
-San Jose, CA's median 1BR rent is up 4.6% to $2,280, coming in at #3 in the nation.
-Coming in a close 4th, Oakland, CA's median 1BR rent is up a considerable 13.5% to $2,270.

It's too early to be sure, but for the first time in many years, a single rental site recorded a lower median rent in San Francisco than New York. Only weeks of nail-biting will tell us if this is a harbinger of things to come or a cruel fake out.

The numbers show that you’re getting more bang for your buck in popular neighborhoods of San Francisco compared to those in New York. That’s right, New York neighborhoods are more expensive on a price per square foot basis.

On the whole, rental prices in San Francisco remained relatively flat, which means that $2,000 still won't get you much.
