Children showed high incidence of reported food hypersensitivity | Allergy Immunology

Children showed high incidence of reported food hypersensitivity | Allergy Immunology | Allergy (and clinical immunology) | Scoop.it
Allergy Immunology | Swedish schoolchildren showed a high incidence of perceived food hypersensitivity, particularly to cow’s milk, according to recent study results.
Gilbert C FAURE's insight:

Researchers studied a population-based cohort of 2,585 children (aged 7 to 8 years) from three Swedish towns who participated in a parental questionnaire in 2006. Ninety percent of children from two of the towns (n=1,700) also participated in skin prick testing (SPT) with airborne allergens. In 2010, when the children were aged 11 to 12 years, the same methods were used, with 89% participation. At follow-up, 652 children in the SPT cohort provided a blood sample for analysis of IgE-antibodies.

There was an increase in perceived food hypersensitivity (FHS) from 21.4% (aged 8 years) to 25.9% (aged 12 years; P<.001), with cumulative incidence of food hypersensitivity of 14.7% and remission at 32.7% during that period.

“This pattern was particularly evident for hypersensitivity to cow’s milk [9% to 13%; P<.001], while the incidence of hypersensitivity to other foods was lower,” the researchers wrote.

Incidence of FHS was associated with female sex (OR=1.8; 95% CI, 1.3-2.5), allergic heredity (OR=1.6; 95% CI, 1.2-2.1), current rhinitis (OR=3.4; 95% CI, 1.9-5.9) and allergic sensitization (OR=1.6; 95% CI, 1.1-2.3). There was a negative association between allergic sensitization and remission. Hypersensitivity to milk had different risk-factor patterns for incidence and remission compared with other foods.

“Generally, the agreement between reported [FHS] and IgE-sensitization to the implicated food was poor,” the researchers wrote.

“There was a high prevalence, a high cumulative incidence and a high remission of perceived FHS,” the researchers concluded. “Further studies including diagnostic methods are needed to evaluate the association between reported symptoms to food and true FHS. This is particularly important for the large number of children reporting FHS to essential foods like cow’s milk.”
