Playing music is the brain’s equivalent of a full body workout,” says educator Anita Collins in a TED-Ed video on how playing music benefits the brain. Playing music requires the visual, auditory, and motor cortices all at once and since fine motor skills require both hemispheres of the brain, the act of playing music may strengthen the bridge between the two sides. In studies comparing playing music to other activities, including other forms of art, playing an instrument is uniquely powerful for the brain.

When you experience rejection, it’s natural to take certain measures in order to preserve your self- esteem, like trying to fit in with a social group and gain their approval. However, research has shown that people who view themselves as independent may be somewhat immune to the negative effects of rejection, and may even use social rejection as creative fuel.
Sharon Kim and her colleagues, who conducted the study, hypothesized that these boosts in creativity were fueled by a differentiation mind- set, or as they put it, “salient feelings of being different from others.” Independent people not only may be resistant to the negative consequences of rejection but indeed may be strengthened by experiences that reaffirm their sense of independence. As Kim puts it, “Independent selves are motivated to remain distinctly separate from others.” This motivation may, in turn, trigger psychological processes that boost creative thinking. Rejection is not just a catalyst for creativity—it can also be a by-product of it. As the study’s authors write, “The very traits that distinguish highly creative people, such as unconventionality, make them easy targets for rejection.”

I believe in the potential power of blogging. I believe it can be harnessed to be a powerful pedagogical tool in the 21st Century.
4 Benefits of Integrating Blogging into Pedagogy 1. Blogs promote participation and collaboration of knowledge and skills. There are a myriad of resources available on the internet that can help students become creators, and not merely consumers of different texts and bodies of knowledge.
2. Blogs promote global communication and collaboration. Teachers can facilitate interactions with diverse cultures, ethnicities, and religions, and social contexts. Students can be helped to challenging their thinking by considering other viewpoints.
3. Blogs promote the critical analysis of pedagogy and literacies.
4. Blogs create the potential for interactive spaces for authentic exchanges. Strategies including reading logs, book reviews, parental communication, encouraging reading and writing and responding around a particular theme or focus. If we can harness this power, we have a strong pedagogical tool on our hands. And that aversion to an unexpected hitch in the plan makes sense. “We don’t want to overcome unnecessary hurdles,” says Tim Harford is his TED talk about why those messy situations lead to the best results. He gives examples in disparate fields like music production, performances, classrooms, psychology and engineering where unexpected disruptions actually make people more creative.

Giving a soldering iron to a ten year old to teach them about electronics maybe isn’t the best idea. littleBits, on the other hand, turn basic electronic components into magnetic building blocks that make it easy and safe for kids to build circuits. And now that it includes Bluetooth, those custom creations can finally be controlled by a smartphone.
