What Creativity Really Is - and Why Schools Need It | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing

What Creativity Really Is - and Why Schools Need It | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
What is creativity?

Although creativity is often defined in terms of new and useful products, I believe it makes more sense to define it in terms of processes. Specifically, creativity involves cognitive processes that transform one’s understanding of, or relationship to, the world.

A society thrives when individuals are given the space to create or imitate ideas.

There may be adaptive value to the seemingly mixed messages that teachers send about creativity. Creativity is the novelty-generating component of cultural evolution. As in any kind of evolutionary process, novelty must be balanced by preservation.

In biological evolution, the novelty-generating components are genetic mutation and recombination, and the novelty-preserving components include the survival and reproduction of “fit” individuals. In cultural evolution, the novelty-generating component is creativity, and the novelty-preserving components include imitation and other forms of social learning.

It isn’t actually necessary for everyone to be creative for the benefits of creativity to be felt by all. We can reap the rewards of the creative person’s ideas by copying them, buying from them or simply admiring them. Few of us can build a computer or write a symphony, but they are ours to use and enjoy nevertheless.

Emergent technologies are poised to radically change how we work and live. They will transform our cities and workplaces, shifting jobs and entrepreneurship in new directions, and spur new ways to manage our lives. All of society will be affected, up to and including how we interact with machines themselves.

Sophisticated machines and applications that communicate online will accelerate demand for broadband internet and challenge existing information and telecommunication norms.

All of this will require ongoing discussions about security, infrastructure and open-data policy and planning. We now need action. We must move past: “We know it’s coming and have to do something” to “Here is how we can implement and collaborate to make it happen.”

What is the Definition of a Lead in Sales? | #Business  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Salespeople and marketing types both toss the word 'lead' around a lot, but they don't always agree on what it means.

Most salespeople define a lead as someone who matches the criterion the salesperson has established and who has the need, reason and/or interest in pursuing the product.

However, marketing professionals tend to define a lead as anyone who might have those qualities, and believe that a lead that proves to have the desired attributes is considered to be a 'prospect.'

Stop Teaching Students What to Think. Teach Them How to Think

The challenge is not information storage but information processing. It's not about information itself but how to use information. The teaching of creativity, curiosity, critical thinking, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and a love of learning itself will be critical to transitioning from the industrial age to the automated age.

Learning how to collaborate and empathize with others will be key. To be human is not to be a lone robot performing a singular task in a vacuum but to be a member of the whole of humanity contributing in countless interdependent ways, including even entirely unpaid ways. This will require nothing less than a redefinition of work itself.

Most people when they talk about the future of work are talking about the future of paid work. But the future of work must recognize all work. Take, for example, someone editing Wikipedia, or contributing code to the open-source code-sharing platform GitHub, or even simply taking care of a family member in the same way any paid care worker would. All of that is important work but would be done for purpose, not pay.

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

New ways of learning, owing much to digital technology and scientific research, are empowering students and business trainees.

The challenge we face is that learning is often not built to fit the learners,” says Dr Itiel Dror, a cognitive neuroscientist from University College London. “There is a mismatch between the learning and the learners. Learning must be ‘brain friendly’, so it’s engaging, motivating and effective.

The sector is being forced to step up its game. Since education operates in a world where millennials now check their phones more than 100 times a day, e-learning solutions must compete aggressively with the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Candy Crush, which are just a distracting tap away.

“The use of technology, by itself, does not enhance learning, it depends on how it’s utilised. That is a great challenge and we are far from using technology to its full potential,” says Dr Dror, a world expert on learning.

The problem lies with most educational systems, globally. Since Victorian times, they’ve been creating mostly dependent learners. Beyond the classroom, students are like fish out of water, gasping for air. They’re reliant on the oxygen of teachers, discipline and schooling to acquire new skills.

This isn’t necessarily creating self-starters thirsty for knowledge and masters of their own learning.

Self-directed strategies are increasingly needed because a dependent-learner strategy cannot keep pace with the latest business developments, says Vincent Belliveau, executive vice president of Cornerstone OnDemand.

The true democratisation of education is now in full swing. “If we want to reach a level of greater learning empowerment, we must provide learners with the authority to be able to curate their own content and the resources to facilitate this. It’s only then that we will truly find learning empowerment,” Mr Belliveau concludes. The tools are all in place. It’s only a matter of time.

IoT: Don't Forget Privacy And Security While Racing To The Price Bottom

IoT: Don't Forget Privacy And Security While Racing To The Price Bottom | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
There is no doubt that companies of all shapes and sizes are increasing their spend in internet-of-things (IoT) technology. In fact, IDC projects this to be a $1.4 trillion market by 2021. With the increased spend and demand by consumers for low-price and high-value IoT devices, makers of these connected technologies have put a premium on affordability. The race to the bottom on price has inadvertently created major risks for organizations and consumers, according to PwC’s “Uncovering the Potential of the Internet of Things” report.

The pressure is on, and we see many makers of connected devices that produce IoT products as inexpensively as possible skipping important steps such as the design of security and privacy protections. This is generating significant new risks that are not widely understood during a time when consumers are more concerned about price than privacy and security. Risks include physical, software, encryption and network attacks, all of which could have wide-ranging effects on our daily lives, from taking over a connected car to obtaining sensitive data from a connected home to accessing a private network via a wearable device.

Also, there are societal concerns, including getting access to valuable intellectual property, sabotage to companies or governments and espionage. Consumer-focused companies need to ensure they are meeting their customers’ concerns. Simply put, the proper cybersecurity and privacy measures can aid businesses in seeing the full potential of IoT.

What Is Crowdfunding And How Does It Benefit The Economy | #ICT #Business #Entrepreneurship | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Crowdfunding is by definition, “the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.”  Check out this video to get a clearer idea of the step by step process of crowdfunding.

In a seemingly nonstop recession wave, small businesses are struggling more than ever to stay afloat, and entrepreneurs are not facing great odds. Crowdfunding offers these individuals a chance at success, by showcasing their businesses and projects to the entire world.

There are numerous donation crowdfunding platforms where entrepreneurs can safely ask for capital such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, RocketHub, and investment platforms like 1000 Angels, the company I co-founded, to name a few. While each site offers their unique spin, the general concept is the same across the board. Project creators can create a profile typically containing a short video, an introduction to their project, a list of rewards per donation, and some images to elaborate. The idea is to create a compelling message that readers will be drawn towards.

3 Digital Marketing Trends to Prepare for in 2018 | #ICT #Business

3 Digital Marketing Trends to Prepare for in 2018 | #ICT #Business  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

A serious marketing expert explores every new trend. They don’t judge. They test. Then, they decide if the trend works for their campaigns. At its core, marketing is all about selling products or services in a way that engages the target audience. The problem is, audience preferences evolve. That’s how digital marketing trends are developed.

Before we start with the trends we expect to see evolving in 2018, let’s see what has been big up to this point in 2017:

Augmented reality. The trend is still relatively new and it’s not going away. According to a report by Market and Market, the virtual reality and augmented reality market is expected to reach $151.3 billion by 2022. We saw IKEA giving us scannable catalogs that allowed us to see how an item would fit in our room. We saw LEGO using AR technology to bring its models to life. That’s smart marketing.
Native advertising. More and more marketing experts are trying to make their ads look less like ads and more like something the consumer would choose to read or see. This publication in The New York Times is a nice example of native advertising. It’s a post paid by Airbnb, but it’s also useful content that informs and educates.
Those were not the only big trends that defined 2017, but let’s stop there. It’s time to focus on the future. A marketer has to foresee the future, so they will be ready to serve the best campaign when the consumers are ready for it.

10 Tips for Creating a Fertile Environment for Kids’ Creativity and Growth | #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
There’s a common misconception that the best way to encourage children’s creativity is simply to get out of the way and let them be creative. Although it’s certainly true that children are naturally curious and inquisitive, they need support to develop their creative capacities and reach their full creative potential.

Supporting children’s development is always a balancing act: how much structure, how much freedom; when to step in, when to step back; when to show, when to tell, when to ask, when to listen.

Here's what quantum computing is and why it matters | #EDUcation #STEM #ICT | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
A typical computer, like the one inside the phone or laptop you’re reading this on, is a binary system, basically a yes/no device. The most amazing thing about computer programmers is how they can take something as basic and simple as a computer chip and spit out something like Microsoft Office by creating a series of “if this, then that” scenarios. This showcases how useful the computer is as a tool for humans to accomplish tasks.

The quantum computer

The quantum computer, however, is an entirely difference concept – the reason it’s quantum is that it doesn’t use binary logic. By its nature a quantum computer is a yes/no/both device. When a developer makes a logic choice they aren’t limited by “if this then that,” they can also ask “if this, then that — or both” and that makes all the difference in the world.

There are several instances where a binary computer can’t feasibly solve a problem the way we’d like to. When asked to solve a problem where every answer is equally likely, a binary computer has to take the time to individually assess each possibility. Quantum computers can assess more than one probability at a time, through something called “quantum entanglement.”
