European Commission

To kick off European Month of the Brain (#brainmonth), a blog about the exciting brain research initiatives being led from both sides of the Atlantic.

You may have seen our recent announcement about the human brain project (HBP). The deserved joint winner of our Future and Emerging Technology scheme; and hence recipient of around €1 billion euros in funding over 10 years.

Separately you may also have seen President Obama’s initiative on Brain Activity Mapping (BAM), worth $100 million in the first year.

Gust MEES's insight:

I agree with Neelie KROES: In short, I welcome both initiatives. I am confident there will be cross-fertilisation without duplication. Most of all I’m convinced that, by putting their grey matter together, researchers in the EU and US can deliver a better world for all our citizens.

Our challenge today is to give our people better job prospects – while also boosting European competitiveness.

Today’s businesses are all going digital and they all need skilled ICT workers. Yet at the moment there aren’t enough workers to meet that huge demand – we could soon have 900,000 unfilled vacancies, even at a time of high unemployment.

There are many possible reasons for this. Maybe people aren’t aware how attractive and enjoyable ICT careers can be; maybe our education systems aren’t giving them the skills businesses actually need; or maybe they don’t feel able to apply for jobs in other EU countries.

The EU's 'Right To Be Forgotten': What Data Protections Are We Missing in the US? - Forbes

The EU's 'Right To Be Forgotten': What Data Protections Are We Missing in the US? - Forbes | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Speaking to the “do not track issue” regarding the data of social network profiles, Erin Egan, Facebook’s chief privacy officer, said she wasn’t sure that a “do not track” browser setting accurately reflected a user’s wish to not to be tracked online, particularly in cases where companies such as Facebook tracked users to enable the very feature that customizes the user experience on the popular social network. Egan added, “For Facebook, we have social plugins. We don’t use that data for an advertising purpose — we use it to personalize the data on those pages.

===> ” Egan maintains that until the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) sets an official standard, “it’s really hard for companies like us.” More browser platforms may push ahead with a standard of their own, implementing settings that will enable expanded user control to block cookies, such as Internet Explorer’s default do not track setting. <===

Europe - What do we celebrate on 9th May?

Europe - What do we celebrate on 9th May? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

9th May is Europe Day. It involves all of the citizens of the EU because it celebrates the declaration delivered on 9th May 1950 by Robert Schuman. On that day five years after the end of the Second World War French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman made the initial appeal for the construction of Europe.

This declaration announced the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). During the European Council in Milan in 1985 the heads of State and government decided to set 9th May as "Europe Day".

Celebrated each year since 1986, Europe Day is the occasion for events and celebrations that draws Europe closer to its citizens.

EUROPA - European Commission welcomes European Parliament's vote to extend mandate of ENISA and strengthen EU Cybersecurity

EUROPA - European Commission welcomes European Parliament's vote to extend mandate of ENISA and strengthen EU Cybersecurity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

European Commission - Press Release - MEMO Brussels, 16 April 2013 European Commission

The European Commission welcomes the vote of the European Parliament in a plenary session today to extend the mandate of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).

Today's vote (626 for, 45 against) is the conclusion of lengthy political discussions between Council and the European Parliament. A political agreement was reached at the end of January 2013, and EU Ministers formally endorsed the Regulation on 8 February. The new Regulation (seeMEMO/10/459) grants ENISA a new 7 year mandate.

This is particularly significant given the important role the agency will play in the implementation of the EU Cybersecurity Strategy adopted by the European Commission in January (see IP/13/94).

ENISA will retain its seat in Heraklion, Crete, but will also have a branch office in Athens which brings it closer to its stakeholders and makes the agency more efficient.

European Commission Vice-President Neelie Kroes said: "Today's vote offers a new start for a new Enisa: with expanded tasks, a more agile and efficient organization and governance.
