It's World Password Day, Change Yours

It's World Password Day, Change Yours | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Today is World Password Day, a holiday that’s here to remind us that our privacy is as safe as we make it be.

The day was first created by Intel Security and support for the idea has picked up. There are currently some 170 organizations, including Toshiba, Dell and Microsoft, and they’re asking Internet users to make sure that they change their passwords.

The concept came as Intel was thinking about a security education program. It’s not exactly a secret that people don’t change their passwords as the years go by, even though servers may fall prey to hackers and data can be stolen.

Yes, YOU Actually Are A Target For Cyber Criminals! [PDF]

Why You Are Targeted
Crimes such as fraud, identity theft or extortion have existed for as long as there have been civilizations, they are a part of our daily lives.

A criminal’s goal has always been the same: to make as much money as possible, as easily as possible, and with as little risk as possible.

Traditionally, this was difficult because criminals were often limited by their location and had to physically interact with their intended victims.

This not only limited whom criminals could target, but also exposed criminals to a great deal of risk. However, crime has radically changed
with the advent of the Internet and online technology.

Now cyber criminals can easily target almost everyone in the world, with little or no cost, and at very little risk. Additionally, cyber criminals have become highly organized .and efficient, enabling them to be more effective than ever

Is data privacy more important than ever?

Is data privacy more important than ever? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
This article is inspired by another piece we've published today in which John Bryan asks 'is data privacy an out of date concept?' I think we all have a responsibility to ourselves and the younger ...

We might be comfortable letting adults push the envelope with brave or ill informed privacy choices but we have a legal and moral duty to protect our children from damaging themselves.

.

We have to find a way to make our kids the beneficiaries of social change rather than the cannon fodder - when it comes to data privacy that means erring on the side of caution.

.

Their generation might grow to adulthood in a world where fewer things are considered shameful or embarrassing but, right now, that isn't even true in their own closed social circles - cyber-bullying is real, widespread and damaging.

.

So, whatever the future holds, we have a job to do today, and part of that job is leading by example.

A MUST READ!!!

Governments, The Web and Surveillance

Governments, The Web and Surveillance | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
When the web became commonplace, the decision-makers ignored it, considering it irrelevant. As a result, freedom flourished online. People weren't just consuming content; they were creating it.

But, eventually, politicians and leaders realised how important the internet is. And they realised how useful the internet can be for other purposes — especially for surveillance of citizens. The two chief inventions of our generation — the internet and the mobile phone — changed the world. However, they both turned out to be perfect tools for the surveillance state. And in such a state, everybody is assumed guilty.

US intelligence agencies have a full legal right to monitor foreigners — and most of us are foreigners to the Americans. So when we use US-based services, we are under surveillance — and most of the services we use are US-based.

Advancements in computing power and data storage have made wholesale surveillance possible. But they've also made leaking possible, which will keep organisations worrying about getting caught over any wrongdoing. The future of the web is hanging in the balance between parties that want to keep us under surveillance and parties that want to reveal the nature of such surveillance. Both parties have the data revolution on their side.

While governments are watching over us, they know we're watching over them.

Metadata is surveillance: my online metadata actually reveals where I’ve been

Metadata is surveillance: my online metadata actually reveals where I’ve been | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
In an attempt to simulate the NSA's capability, Ars tracks its own editor for 11 days.

“Facebook knows if you hit any page that has a Like button it,” he said. “Same with TweetThis, unless the site goes out of the way to mask them, then these are specifically reporting them to social networks. This is why NSA loves it, is because they can go along for the ride.

.

“One thing that we know that the NSA does on their non-US wiretaps is bind usernames to cookies so if you see a request for LinkedIn or YouTube or Yahoo, these are all sites that have user ID in the clear, all you need to do is see a request, and say I don't know who this is or I know who this is, but then you look at the HTML body and look for the username. This is why the NSA went after Google ad networks, include user identification [broadcast] in the clear: ‘I am person X at this location.’

.

Despite the vast amount of data, it's just as easy to store as it is to interpret. “It works out to only a few kilobytes per person for everyone on the planet,” Weaver added. In other words, if I had the access, it'd cost just a few thousand dollars to have enough consumer-grade storage to keep data on everyone in the United States. It would comfortably fit on my desk.

7 Ways Teaching Has Changed

7 Ways Teaching Has Changed | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
This Is The World Teachers Must Adapt To: 7 Ways Teaching Has Changed by Terry Heick Teachers are the arbitrators of knowledge and culture. Knowledge…

7. A culture that can seem, well, distracted

And if we’re going to talk about the world teachers must adapt to, the idea of distraction has to be at least mentioned.

.

I’m not sure any of us fully understand the complexities of modern connectivity, information access, and the subjective idea of “distraction.” (After all, if five people are all at a table at Starbucks with their faces stuck to their phones, who’s to say their physical company rather than the respective apps that their own aren’t doing the distracting?)

.

That said, things are certainly different than the BS era of yesteryear (that is, before smartphones). At any moment someone can bust out a digital screen and start smearing their fingers across it. And no one knows what they’re doing and so we assume the worst and say the world is going down in flames.

.

And it very well could be. This is all new, so we don’t know. This is an era full of possibility, uncertainty, excitement, loss, and change.

.

This is the world teachers must adapt to.

Gust MEES's insight:

Priscilla Der's curator insight, April 6, 2014 10:29 PM

This article relates back to Global Competency as teachers must stay current with societal changes and shifts. Relating to students and engaging students require teachers to stay current and in the know vs. sticking to traditional routes/techniques in which we were taught with. We must continuously adjust our teaching to fit the 21st century needs and keep re-adjusting to align these needs to the Common Core curriculum.
