Spark Photon: The $19 Internet of Things Kit

Spark Photon: The $19 Internet of Things Kit | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
first met Spark this summer when it raised more than $560,000 on Kickstarter for its Arduino-like Spark Core Wi-Fi connector kit. It subsequently went on to raise a $4.9 million Series A round and launch a cloud OS to power its Internet of Things (IoT) enabling hardware. Now it’s back with the Spark Photon, a postage stamp sized Wi-Fi development board for building connected devices.

The Spark Photon costs just $19 and is so small it comes packaged in a matchbox. It’s designed for putting together prototype devices. Once you’ve finalized your prototype, Spark is making the Spark P0 ($10) and P1 ($12) Wi-Fi enabled modules available for integration directly into a product.

MakerClub Receives £80,000 from UK Government to Integrate Expertise in 3D Robotics into School Curriculum

MakerClub Receives £80,000 from UK Government to Integrate Expertise in 3D Robotics into School Curriculum | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The UK’s Brighton-based MakerClub is important in that it is one of the 3D printing technology companies that recognizes how important it is to invest in the future: our kids.

Since they will be the inventors and makers of the future, it’s important to expose our children to grade-level appropriate technology and science as soon as possible — and not only does it enrich their minds, but as they grow, so will the technology. The world of 3D printing is still in its infancy, and it doesn’t take a crystal ball to know that future generations are going to take this amazing — and fun — technology and run with the winds of change.

MakerClub is involved in a handful of different projects for school-aged kids right now (including the Carduino, a customizable remote-controlled car that kids can 3D print themselves, which we reported on recently), and just recently received an £80,000 grant from the UK government to design a school-age online resource for programming, 3D design, and electronic engineering. Translating to about $126,000, these funds were provided to MakerClub as one of fifteen companies selected as finalists out of hundreds of applicants in the ‘Learning Technologies: Design for Impact’ competition sponsored by the UK government. (For a full list including the other finalists, click here.)

Electrostatic discharge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | #MakerED | MakerSpaces |

Electrostatic discharge

Electrostatic discharge ( ESD) is the sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects caused by contact, an electrical short, or dielectric breakdown. A buildup of static electricity can be caused by tribocharging or by electrostatic induction. The ESD occurs when differently-charged objects are brought close together or when the dielectric between them breaks down, often creating a visible spark.
