Man kann es Murmelbahn nennen oder auch Rube-Goldberg-Maschine – ganz egal: Was der YouTuber namens Kaplamino gebaut hat, ist schön anzuschauen und nutzt einige physikalische Effekte souverän aus.

Was der YouTube-Nutzer mit dem Pseudonym Kaplamino auf einer offenbar schräggestellten Holzplatte mit Kirschbaumfurnier angeordnet hat, fängt erst einmal an wie eine simple Murmelbahn, die vielleicht noch Dreijährigen die Kinnlade herunterfallen lässt: Eine Glasmurmel folgt der Bahn, die ihr von ein paar Holzleisten-Stückchen vorgegeben wird. Aber was sich dann im Lauf von rund vier Minuten auf insgesamt 16 Bildausschnitten abspielt, fasziniert auch Erwachsene: Wechselweise Murmeln und Stahlkugeln absolvieren einen vertrackten Parcours und lösen ausgeklügelte Mechanismen aus, bei dem Schaschlikspieße Impulse übertragen und pendelnde Papierstückchen einzelne Kugeln auf die richtige Bahn bringen. Auch Münzen, Dominosteine und eine Schere sind mit von der Partie.

Auf Kickstarter haben sich drei findige Bastler die Finanzierung ihrer Bausteine gesichert. Die Brixo genannten Klötze lassen sich mit herkömmlichen LEGO-Steinen kombinieren und Bauprojekte so um Zusatzfunktionen erweitern.

Brixo bietet drei unterschiedliche Steinkategorien an: Trigger-Blöcke, die bestimmte Aktionen auslösen. Dazu kommen Connector-Blöcke, die als Leitung fungieren. LED-Beleuchtung oder Motoren verbauen die Macher in Action-Blöcken. Die Trigger-Blöcke decken ganz unterschiedliche Funktionen ab. Es gibt Sensoren für Licht, Annäherung und Sound. Ein Bluetooth-Baustein ermöglicht die Verbindung mit dem Smartphone und sogar die Fernsteuerung durch Dienste wie IFTTT.

Die zur Finanzierung von Brixo nötigen 50.000 US-Dollar wurden deutlich übertroffen. Schon 23 Tage vor dem Ende der Kickstarter-Kampange wurden über 350.000 US-Dollar beigesteuert. Starter Kits sind ab Oktober 2016 zum Preis von 35 US-Dollar zu haben.

An Instructables user by the name of ‘Joehan’ shared a 3D printable solution for what is perhaps the only component that is more important than the actual wind turbine itself - an electrostatic motor that can reside within the wind turbine.

Cartesian Co.’s rapid prototyping machine is putting the “print" back in printed circuit boards. Despite how far 3D printing has come over the past couple of years, a number of startups have been looking for new ways to take it one step further. Rather than just spit out odds and ends in plastic, what if you could quickly extrude something a bit smarter, like circuit boards, on demand? That’s the idea behind Cartesian Co.’s rapid prototyping machine dubbed Argentum.

Conclusion

Even though these weeks were considered a maker education summer camp, there was an expectation from the school and parents that the learning activities incorporated the expectations and rigors of a classroom environment. I could easily identify cross-curricular state and common core standards even though I never taught to THE standards. Never during the sessions were the young learners formally testing, asked to be quiet or sit still, or asked to finish quickly so we can move on. Yet, I believe each of the kids would say that they learned lots . . . . and had fun doing so.

Young makers are more capable than what people (adults) typically believe.

Instead, the making learning activities were structured to honor natural ways of learning along with developmentally appropriate practices. Sadly, it appears that some of these natural ways of learning were “conditioned” out of the young learners through more formalized education as I identified in my observations.

Incorporating making into a learning environment teaches lifelong learning skills such of perseverance, love of learning, working with others, and embracing challenges.
