7 characteristics of a digital mindset

7 characteristics of a digital mindset | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
An individual with a digital mindset understands the power of technology to democratize scale and speed up every form of interaction and action

Growth Mindset

Carol Dweck, in her research, differentiated between Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset, and how these linked to people’s perception of their own abilities. Those with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence is static, and this can become an obstacle to change in behavior. This in turn makes it difficult for them to be learning agile or to adjust to a rapidly changing and ambiguous world. On the other hand, people with a growth mindset are likely to take every opportunity to pull the resources they need to perform better. They are usually the ones to volunteer information, ask questions and try out new ways of doing things. It cannot be argued that the digital world calls for constant exploration, experimentation and learning. And individuals with a growth mindset are more likely to put in extra effort to learn new things, take charge of their own learning, and possess a resilience that helps them to overcome challenges.

Agile Approach

Being agile is more than just adapting to change. In the age of disruptive tech, we must be able to foresee and change before the need to change arises. Agility in this context encompasses the skill of being able to scan the landscape of one's domain of work and organizational ecosystem, and keeping pace with what is happening at the edges to remain relevant. In the digital era, this would mean being comfortable with technology, seeing change as an opportunity, and accepting the new ways of working without feeling threatened.

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
What is professional development?  It is pretty much anything that helps one develop professionally. At the heart, professional development is about growth and learning.  In the field of education, it seems like many quickly think of educational opportunities that mimic what they see in their schools. As a result, they turn professional learning and education into schooling.  The problem with that is that schooling is too limiting.  In this age, there are many other exciting and high-impact learning opportunities for teachers that extend beyond traditional notions of schooling.  When we hear the phrase “professional development,” certain practices likely come to mind, things like in-services and conferences. In the digital age, there are countless other opportunities for professional development and restricting one’s thoughts to just a few options limits our insight into what is possible for our students.  With that in mind, here is a brainstorm of 20 options available to educators today. This is far from an exhaustive list, but it is enough to start exploring the possibilities.  Feel free to suggest others in a comment to this post.

What types of specialized software or hardware should be available? What is available?

What new types of furniture might you need to add or replace?
What space(s) are you underusing?

The activities were used to create an activity map for each media center that later identified components of those spaces and finally located them within the larger space. The media coordinators then conducted a school-based focus group and revised the plan according to stakeholder input. After negotiated outcomes and revisions, a road map for implementation was created that included measurable goals and even a budget timeline in some instances.

The process yielded plans, but it also enabled people to view their roles differently in light of best practices and their learners. There is excitement in being part of something that has the capacity to change teaching and learning in every school, child and home in Buncombe county.

What are your digital rights? | Why do digital rights matter? | Privacy | Cyberespionage | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Why do digital rights matter?

As we increasingly conduct our lives online – shopping, socializing and sharing information – our digital rights, particularly the rights to privacy and freedom of expression, are becoming more important. We need to understand how our data is being used by companies, governments and internet giants such as Facebook and Google. Is it being handled fairly and scrupulously, or sold or shared without our consent?

Revelations about surveillance programmes and digital hacking have sparked political and diplomatic wrangles. National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden has called for new international laws to protect data privacy, arguing that now we know about mass data surveillance it is time to “assert our traditional and digital rights so that we can protect them”.

The Reality Of Virtual Reality: What Are Its Practical Implications For eLearning? - eLearning Industry

The Reality Of Virtual Reality: What Are Its Practical Implications For eLearning? - eLearning Industry | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Engagement is often seen as the “Holy Grail” of eLearning: If a learner is engaged with the learning material, then she/he is interested and invested in it, seeks to understand it, and will try hard to do well. Engaging eLearning is effective eLearning, and so if virtual reality can provide engaging learning, then it can be an excellent next step for eLearning.

“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” - Confucius

Building an effective learning environment | LEARNing To LEARN

Building an effective learning environment | LEARNing To LEARN | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Conclusions The learners must do the learning. We need to make sure that learners are able to work within an environment that helps them do this. In other words, our job as teachers is to create the conditions for success. There are no right or wrong ways to build an effective learning environment. It needs to fit the context in which students will learn. However, before even beginning to design a course or program, we should be thinking of what this learning environment could look like. Technology now enables us to build a wide variety of effective learning environments. But technology alone is not enough; it needs to include other components for learner success. This is not to say that self-managing learners cannot build their own effective, personal learning environments, but they need to consider the other components as well as the technology.
