8 digital skills we must teach our children | #DQ #DigitalQuotient #EQ #EmotionalQuotient

8 digital skills we must teach our children | #DQ #DigitalQuotient #EQ #EmotionalQuotient | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The digital world is a vast expanse of learning and entertainment. But it is in this digital world that kids are also exposed to many risks, such as cyberbullying, technology addiction, obscene and violent content, radicalization, scams and data theft. The problem lies in the fast and ever evolving nature of the digital world, where proper internet governance and policies for child protection are slow to catch up, rendering them ineffective.

Moreover, there is the digital age gap. The way children use technology is very different from adults. This gap makes it difficult for parents and educators to fully understand the risks and threats that children could face online. As a result, adults may feel unable to advise children on the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. Likewise, this gap gives rise to different perspectives of what is considered acceptable behaviour.

So how can we, as parents, educators and leaders, prepare our children for the digital age? Without a doubt, it is critical for us to equip them with digital intelligence.

Can eLearning Help You Win the Digital Skills Race?

Can eLearning Help You Win the Digital Skills Race? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Digital skills call for digital training

So now we’ve established that training is going to be one of the cornerstones of beating the Digital Skills Shortage. But what kind of training? Digital! You wouldn’t teach someone about the future by using ancient history textbooks, and you can’t just rely on traditional face-to-face training to teach digital skills.

But aside from the fact that digital training matches the subject matter more closely, another thing to consider is the frequency of training. One of the big four accounting firms, Deloitte, suggested that half of all digital skills become obsolete within about 30 months, due to technological change and development [5]. So that means constant updates are needed. Now, you could call in an external trainer and organize a workshop on a large scale every couple of years, but we could be talking about costs of tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost working time, organizational time, and hiring trainers.

The idea is that if you have an online training program, then it’s simple enough to update the content as frequently as necessary. On a monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly basis; all that’s needed to keep training up to date is to stay abreast of any changes in the industry. Overall, this makes a lot more financial sense than offline training.

Besides this, a survey by Brandon Hall titled the “State of Learning” study, showed that employees expect continuous learning opportunities; for instance:

61% expect learning activity at least weekly,
90% expect learning activity at least monthly

THE NEW SKILLS AGENDA FOR EUROPE: EUROPEAN SCHOOLNET'S PERSPECTIVE | #eSkills

THE NEW SKILLS AGENDA FOR EUROPE: EUROPEAN SCHOOLNET'S PERSPECTIVE | #eSkills  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
14/07/2016

The current political momentum around skills is certainly welcomed by those whom, as European Schoolnet, strongly believe in the importance of skills and education to thrive in society.

European Schoolnet is a Brussels-based network of 30 European Ministries of Education. We aim to bring innovation in teaching and learning. We therefore welcome the launch of the New Skills Agenda by the European Commission and support the priorities that are set within the agenda, in particular the emphasis on the need to develop digital skills.

From digital skills to the safe and responsible use of online technology, through the wide variety of ICT in education projects we are involved in, it is clear to us how much digital skills are needed for citizens to actively participate in today's digital society, and how central they are in shaping the personal and professional future of a connected generation. Our leading role in a number of European initiatives in the area of STEM and of Key Competences for lifelong learning has further strengthened our belief that investing in the development and recognition of a wide variety of skills is beneficial to learners’ personal development, active citizenship, social inclusion, and employment.

European Schoolnet looks forward to supporting the New Skills Agenda for Europe in the four major areas outlined below. We believe that our network of stakeholders (Ministries of Education, schools, teachers, researchers, and industry partners) together with our targeted actions, tools, platforms, and services are able to contribute to bring about change.

  • Foster the development and assessment of key competences
  • Develop learners’ digital skills in school
  • Enhance young people’s employability
  • Develop students’ media literacy and critical thinking for digital citizenship

Leadership styles in education – The Seven Secrets to New Age Leadership | #Business #CHANGE #LEARNing2LEARN

Leadership styles in education – The Seven Secrets to New Age Leadership | #Business #CHANGE #LEARNing2LEARN | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The architect leader knows that the ability to create a nourishing and challenging environment for people to grow in is more important than any technical skill she can possess.

Continuous Improvement – The leader of tomorrow will regularly challenge old beliefs and be passionate about learning and about applying that learning in the real world. She will often ask my favorite question “Who is doing something differently then I am and what can I learn from them?”

The New Leader is Authentic. How and who you are is just as important as what you know! Hold yourself to the highest standards – don’t talk the talk unless you are prepared to walk the walk. Don’t expect of others what you don’t expect from your self. Be real, tell the truth. The leaders that are the most revered are those that let the light of who they are shine through in all they do. They are honest, forthright and clear.

Coach/Facilitator – A leader needs to be a coach not a commander. He needs to hold space open for things to happen. It is said that when leaders do their job properly people believe they have done it themselves. Leaders are there to help people see things from a different perspective, to provide questions that encourage learning and to help turn work experiences into learning experiences.

Our new leader is a Visionary. It’s clearly documented that visionary leaders are successful at mobilizing human potential. A vision provides focus. It’s a tool for aligning energy. Clear vision and purpose provide people with a framework from which to make decisions, it organizes action and effort.

The Habits Of The Most Successful Networkers | #ICT #ProfessionalDevelopment #eSkills #Success | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Ask successful people for career advice, and they’ll mention networking, for good reason. It works. That doesn’t stop people from hating the idea, though. One recent study on networking found words used to describe the process included "fake," "deceitful," and "disingenuous." With such a negative connotation, no wonder it’s easy to underinvest in building a network.

But master connectors know that it’s possible to avoid this trap. They figure out ways of getting to know people that feel more giving than fake, and then they develop habits that keep them connecting, even if it would be easier not to.

I think a lot of people are scared of the idea of networking, but if you stop and think about it most people do it subconsciously...

The Future of Learning — Learning {Re}imagined | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU

The Future of Learning - Learning {Re}imagined - Medium
It’s as if we agreed that the purpose of education was simply content distribution and testing, and therefore we don’t really need skilled teachers. We could actually offload that to technology.

In my opinion, that’s wrong. I think there’s much more to teaching and learning than that and I think we should allow much more freedom in the say that technology is used in the classroom and we should be able to use technology to amplify our ability to learn and our ability to teach rather than effectively imprison us.

For example, in testing, in examinations, in 2016 why are students not allowed to take their computer connected to the internet into the examination room? Why are they not allowed to share their answers with their colleagues? Why are they not allowed to phone their mother or phone a subject specialist? Why do we suddenly pretend that the twenty-first century never happened when a child enters an examination room?

This blog entry and video interview pose an interesting question: why do we send students to school? To what end? A question well worth considering regardless of the student's age. Thoughts?
