Developing Empathy

Framework

When we put ourselves in another person’s shoes, we are often more sensitive to what that person is experiencing and are less likely to tease or bully them. By explicitly teaching students to be more conscious of other people’s feelings, we can create a more accepting and respectful school community.

Additional Resources

Why You Should Have More Empathy | #SoftSkills

Why You Should Have More Empathy | #SoftSkills  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Why are some people so much better at expressing empathy than others?

Psychologists define empathy as sensitivity to the emotions, both positive and negative, of other people. You can feel empathic—or empathetic (the two words are used interchangeably)—to someone who is feeling positive feelings, such as amusement or joy, in addition to someone who is feeling sadness or anger. “Empathy is being in the heart of another person,” says Susan Kuczmarski, a cultural anthropologist and adjunct faculty member in the executive education program at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

Researchers have determined that people react in one of two ways when faced with another person’s emotions. Sometimes people respond with “empathic concern” or caregiving. They see themselves as a source of comfort or support for the other person.

But sometimes people feel threatened by the other person’s emotions and focus instead on themselves. They might try to help, to minimize their own discomfort. Typically they distance themselves. Psychologists call this response “empathic distress.”

What is Emotional Intelligence and Why Should We Teach it? | #EQ #SoftSkills #Empathy

What is Emotional Intelligence and Why Should We Teach it? | #EQ #SoftSkills #Empathy  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Harvard theorist Howard Gardner describes emotional intelligence as “the level of your ability to understand other people, what motivates them and how to work cooperatively with them.”  Emotional intelligence can be broken down into five major components.  When we look at each in turn it becomes easy to understand why EQ plays such a key role success.

Soft skills, should we be encouraging it more at school and in the workplace?  Focusing on soft skills earlier in life, not only academics. Could this make a difference to a child's development and equip them for life after school?  Read this interesting article.

Soft Skills Give Workers a Big Edge. It’s Time to Start Focusing on Them in School, Report Says

Soft Skills Give Workers a Big Edge. It’s Time to Start Focusing on Them in School, Report Says | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Teaching and improving soft skills—such as conscientiousness, adaptability and perseverance—can provide huge economic gains for young people, and should receive more attention from education policy makers, according to a new report from the Hamilton Project.

Soft skills, also known as noncognitive skills or foundational skills, are increasingly in demand in today’s economy. More Americans work in service-sector jobs that require human interaction, and automation and technology are replacing jobs involving routine tasks.

That’s given workers with strong soft skills a big advantage in the labor market, the group said in the paper, released Tuesday, that compiled existing research on various aspects of soft skills in the labor market. (The Hamilton Project is an economic policy arm of the Brookings Institution.)

What is soft skills? - Definition from WhatIs.com

What is soft skills? - Definition from WhatIs.com | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Soft skills is a synonym for "people skills." The term describes those personal attributes that indicate a high level of emotional intelligence.

Unlike hard skills, which describe a person's technical skill set and ability to perform specific tasks, soft skills are broadly applicable across job titles and industries. It's often said that hard skills will get you an interview but you need soft skills to get -- and keep -- the job.

'Basic Skills' or 'Soft Skills:' What Should Be Taught and Tested? | #LEARNing2LEARN

'Basic Skills' or 'Soft Skills:' What Should Be Taught and Tested? | #LEARNing2LEARN  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Friedman clearly notes how Googlers have found that “the old basic skills are not enough,” the more important advantage is ability or capacity to “learn above” the basic skills. That means, the ability to ask big questions, see connections, draw parallels and distinctions, think originally and follow leads, and do it objectively, creatively and collaboratively. The reason this is absolutely essential to Google, and to all organizations that are shaping the new economy, is that innovation and learning to learn new-stuff-on-the-fly are key to their success, and innovation demands perceiving what was not there before and doing whatever you can to learn it.

That is why I think Google’s articulation of the ‘soft skills’ of leadership, innovation, humility, teamwork, and ownership is so right-on. Soft they may be, but these skills constitute a combination that is essential to the core work of innovation, which rarely happens in instantaneous individual breakthroughs but rather evolves through collaborative group endeavors in which personal adaptability is a necessity.
