Curiosity: The Heart of Lifelong Learning | LEARNing To LEARN | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

If you suspect that curious kids fare better in careers and life, you're right—for a variety of reasons. Research suggests that intellectual curiosity has as big of an effect on performance as hard work. (link is external) When put together, curiosity and hard work account for success just as much as intelligence.

.

Another study found that people who were curious about a topic retained what they learned for longer periods of time (link is external). And even more impressive, research has linked curiosity to a wide range of important adaptive behaviors, (link is external) including tolerance of anxiety and uncertainty, positive emotions, humor, playfulness, out-of-box thinking, and a noncritical attitude—all attributes associated with healthy social outcomes.

Techniques for Unleashing Student Work from Learning Management Systems | Life Long LEARNing

Techniques for Unleashing Student Work from Learning Management Systems | Life Long LEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
In my mind, this is exactly what the future of lifelong learning looks like. We will be learning constantly throughout our careers as workers and citizens, and once young people graduate from formal institutions, much of that learning will be self-directed and unstructured. What I hope that students could take away from my Connected Course were the skill sets to participate in that kind of learning out on the open Web, and the belief that lifelong learning can be most powerful when we intentionally build networks of people to learn with us.

On the first day of my course, I tell students that they have three responsibilities: to advance their own learning, to advance the learning of their classmates and to advance the learning of their wider communities. If they are successful as students, they’ll benefit not only themselves, but their classmates and colleagues beyond.

The Innovator's Mindset: Envisioning the Future

The Innovator's Mindset: Envisioning the Future | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Innovation is everyone's great desire. We worship innovation. Entrepreneurs embrace it. Careers are made on it. Companies compete over it. The challenge is we may not all be talking about the same thing.

The innovator's mindset embraces these ten strategies I have found in my research:
1. Bring value and meaning that is clearly unique.
2. Create a culture of inventing that others can build on.
3. Move with velocity to embrace the new.
4. Have the courage to create.
5. Disrupt yourself before others do.
6. If you don't have passion about an idea, don't do it.
7. Change something to make it better, bring the value.
8. Monetizing innovation is called success.
9. People do the innovating.
10. Decide what mountain top you want to own, then go for it.

Learning Forever: Deconstructing Today´s Education - Miguel Ángel Escotet | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Educational institutions and their teaching systems lag far behind when it comes to adapting to new forms of knowledge and learning. While the education system shapes some of the components of society, it is also conditioned by society, and has therefore to adapt to society’s many and increasingly varied changes.

The requirements of changing ways of thought, scientific discoveries, new technologies, the steady turnover of the school population and the emergence of parallel education in the form of Internet and multimedia are only some of the factors which formal education has difficulty in assimilating.

The education system itself is reluctant to accept new teaching techniques and aids. In the age of the satellite, in the age of instant world communication, schools are still using blackboards or power-point presentations as placebos. This is not even realistic planning; it is enslavement to the past.

Why new technologies could never replace great teaching

Why new technologies could never replace great teaching | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Technology in education gets plenty of hype, but let's not forget the importance of teaching and learning, says Pamela Wright

So where do I stand as an educator, as a leader in education? The centre point of my passion is a philosophy that I instil into my staff, into the school and into every school I support. It is the child – first and foremost.

Teachers don't simply teach concepts and skills. Any new technology can do that.

Good teachers inspire our young people to be lifelong learners, creating a culture of independent enquiry with their enthusiasm and passion. I know this because I see it every day. Good teachers have the skills to know exactly how to get the best out of each and every young person in their care.
