Journey School in California puts increased emphasis on teaching computer ethics.
You can protect a classroom computer from malware and viruses, but how do you prevent students from using a classroom computer to harm someone else?
One school thinks it has an answer. Journey School in Aliso Viejo, a city in southern California, puts increased emphasis on teaching computer ethics. This task is made all the more interesting considering the school contains zero internet-ready devices for its sixth through eighth graders.
“As the children mature we recognize that, as they get into middle school, we want them to use these tools that we have for the good and for their learning,” Journey School administrator Shaheer Faltas said to The Orange County Register. “We don’t think they need a lot of instruction in how you use Excel or Microsoft Word – what they need to know is what is the appropriate use of these resources.”

The world is awash with people and groups wishing to reform education. Some want to go “back to basics” while others want to go “forward to the future”.
Amongst the more progressive groups there is a surprising degree of similarity in what they propose. Thus, the RSA “Opening Minds” project in the UK or the US based P21 or the Apple Classroom of Tomorrow Today all have a high degree of overlap - indeed a Venn diagram of their views would be almost a single circle.

Leadership experts in the K-12 field Jill Berkowicz and Ann Myers write about challenges and possibilities for administrators in the 21st century.
Education is an inherently moral matter. It is moral because people develop (or fail to develop) morally as well as physically, emotionally, and intellectually. It is moral because teaching--helping to shape other people's minds, sensibilities, and capabilities -raises deep questions of purpose, values, and responsibility. It is moral because it involves the relationship between one generation and another, a relationship that helps determine the direction and quality of human life" (p. 152). Therein lies our uppermost responsibility. We must stay in touch with our conscience and allow it to inform our decisions.

Civil Courage Can Be Learned
There are behavioral training programs for different age groups (children, adolescents, adults), in which the participants acquire knowledge and skills to show civil courage in different situations and to interfere appropriately. The Institute of Psychology (motivation) of the University of Zurich offers a training program whose aim is to promote civil courage; the program is outlined below. The training’s motto is: “Small steps instead of heroic deeds.” It is based on the latest psychological findings on the conditions of civil courage. According to the column model, knowledge and behavior are strengthened. The training includes the following modules:

Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews is an electronic, peer-reviewed journal that publishes timely reviews of scholarly philosophy books.
Damien Freeman takes on the monumental task of developing a theory of aesthetic experience that accounts for its emotional aspects, its ethical aspects, and the role certain kinds of aesthetic experience can play in a fulfilling life. Despite the enormity of the task, he does an excellent job in so few pages. There are, of course, problems, but the issues that I take with the argument are largely in the details and not in the big picture.
Freeman's main argument is that aesthetic experience can uniquely offer a form of what he calls a plenary experience of emotion. This particular kind of experience is significant to the aesthetic experience because it deals with our emotions as a whole (what he calls the whole emotional economy rather than just parts of the emotions) and thereby offers a unique kind of experience that plays a significant role in our overall thriving emotional life.
Freeman's argument takes as its context the expressivist theories of Tolstoy, Collingwood, and Wollheim; but I believe that he advances his argument to a more comprehensive account of the ways in which we engage with art emotionally and why it is good for us to do so.

Project Based Learning can mean different things to different people, and can be practiced in a variety of ways. For educators who want to dive in, the good news is that a rich trove of resources are available.
In order to create your own definition and practice, here are some parameters to consider. This diagram, enhanced by the critical eye of Brenda Sherry, can help you figure out what’s important to you and your students.
