First use of the #3Dprinter FORM2 | #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #3DPrinting

First use of the #3Dprinter FORM2 | #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #3DPrinting  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Recently I bought myself the latest model of 3D-printers from Formlabs, the Form2.

The Form 2 delivers high-resolution prints in  Industrial 3D printing quality and it is very, very expensive. (I had been waiting (and saving money) for 3 years until I made the financial plunge to get such a machine)

But it has the huge advantage that dosen’t require a lot of tweaking and experimenting to run, you just take it out of the box, you install it and it runs !! It comes with the right software, the materials you need to use are in sich a packaging (1 Liter resin cartridges !) that you can concentrate on the objet you’re printing and not on the maintenance of the machine. The system recognises the resin type, configures settings, and allows you to keep track of resin supplies.

The Form 2 is a SLA printer where SLA stand for Stereolithography. SLA is an additive manufacturing – commonly referred to as 3D printing – technology that converts liquid materials into solid parts, layer by layer, by selectively curing them using a light source in a process called photopolymerization. SLA is widely used to create models, prototypes, patterns, and production parts for a range of industries from engineering and product design to manufacturing, dentistry, jewelry, model making, and education.

Bringing Students Into Professional Development | #StudentVoice #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Professional development is evolving. Slowly but surely, schools and organizations are attempting to move away from the typical sit-and-get workshop and creating formats that promote problem solving and boost participant engagement. This has led to a rise in PD that makes educators the drivers of innovation.

This trend is awesome.

The problem: Participants are forced to make a lot of assumptions about their students because they’re not given a chance to include those students in the process.

What Do We Mean When We Say ‘Social And Emotional Skills’? | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing

What Do We Mean When We Say ‘Social And Emotional Skills’? | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
More and more, people in education agree on the importance of schools’ paying attention to stuff other than academics.

But still, no one agrees on what to call that “stuff.”

I originally published a story on this topic two years ago.

As I reported back then, there were a bunch of overlapping terms in play, from “character” to “grit” to “noncognitive skills.”

This bagginess bugged me, as a member of the education media. It bugged researchers and policymakers too. It still does.

If anything, the case for nonacademics has gotten even stronger since then. In fact, it has been enshrined in federal law. The Every Student Succeeds Act mandates that states measure at least one nonacademic indicator of school success.

There is also new research indicating that school-based interventions to promote social and emotional skills have large, and long-term, positive impacts: an average of $11 for every dollar invested, according to an analysis by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (which is a supporter of NPR).

The Future of Education is Unstructured Learning, and Here's Why

The Future of Education is Unstructured Learning, and Here's Why | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Unstructured learning is an authentic real-world way of learning. That’s because the real world itself doesn’t have neat compartments or set disciplines for success. It demands adaptability, patience, and a willingness to learn and to use what is learned in the moment. Most of all, it requires us to take full responsibility for what we learn.

It’s time to play and to let go of rigid teaching in favour of unstructured learning. For this to happen, teachers have to foster trust in their students. They have to be willing to take a step back and put a little slack on the reins of traditional pedagogy. In short, we need to let things get a little messy. Ease into it—it’s a bold step and it will transform everything.

So what do you think?

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, December 26, 2017 8:36 AM

(Global Digital Citizen Foundation, 2017)

Jerry Busone's curator insight, January 5, 2018 8:14 AM

Unstructured learning brings real to your workshops and classroom. Its not YOU the teacher doing all the presenting but its about guiding and facilitating people through real world problems and allowing them to innovate, apply principles ,models  and come to their own conclusions. Just like there are many ways to lead and sell there are many ways to learn ...

Why Is Tech So Slow To Go? | #EDUcation #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing #Curation #LifeLongLEARNing  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Technology has changed the dynamic of curating information for teachers and students. It gives access to information never before so readily available, or so easily curated. Technology also enables users the ability to publish acquired information in various formats for consumption by others. Additionally, it offers a means in many cases to analyze data in ways that could not be done so easily before technology had become so ubiquitous.

Communication has been upended by technology. There are many ways for people to communicate. We have gone way beyond the dial up telephone. Not only can we communicate with voice, but we can also transmit documents, files, videos, audio files, and live streaming. Gutenberg and Bell would most certainly be impressed.

Access to all of these wonders of technology requires a different mindset than that of the early 20th century. It requires the ability to be flexible and adapt to the constant changes that come with technology. It requires one to commit to being a lifelong learner. It also requires a strict adherence to critical thinking in order to recognize, that which offers value from that which is crap.

Unlearn to Learn: 6 Non-Negotiables of High Quality Professional Learning | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Learning should be fun. With negotiated and scheduled professional development days and a menu of offerings delivered by internal and external providers, there are countless outlets to improve the format of professional learning to increase buy-in and more importantly, relevance for the community that you serve.

Each week, our Getting Smart team engages in deeper learning around a variety of topics that support our exploration of what is new and innovative in education. Recently we visited the topic of memorable professional learning experiences with the purpose of capturing what works and does not work, with an additional layer of intentionality in regards to the correlation of supporting educators as they pursue innovations in learning.

As instructional leaders craft professional development in any format, it is important to assess the flow and structure of what you are creating. Just as we assess the effectiveness of classroom practices for students, the same approach must be honored in the design of engaging professional development.

Art Lang's comment, January 5, 2018 4:17 AM
Quote from the passage: “I’m Sorry.” When did the phrase “I’m sorry” morph into “I’m sorry, but…”? If you are sincerely sorry and want to apologize, then do so, without reservation. It takes an individual of true integrity to admit when he or she has erred. If you’re not truly sorry, why not just skip the apology and avoid compounding the problem?

Opinions: I think this is the modern generation expression of "yes, I am wrong, I should'nt have done what I did, but (even so you should'nt have done this or said this)/(I did'nt mean it this way or I did'nt want it to happen in this way)...". I feel that this individual is just trying to convey the fact that even though she or he does feel apologetic about what he or she has done, she feels that despite this, her mistakes does not negate the other party's mistake or she/he might have wanted to justify the reasons why she had done the things she had done, to avoid misunderstandingsa about the rationale of her actions. I do not feel that it compounds the problen, in fact I think that it makes a problem simpler, by clearing a misunderstanding. The problem might have been complicated earlier due to the misunderstanding, but once the misunderstanding is cleared, the problem is thus simplified.

Quote from the passage: “Please” and “Thank you.” Today’s economic downturn has spawned more cutthroat behavior with less time for courtesies.
Truth be told, with the same speed at which technology has swept the world, manners have been swept under the proverbial rug. I’m left wondering, is this rudeness the result of today’s angst or a trend of indifference that has evolved over time?
While it doesn’t take much effort to say “please” and “thank you,” some people forgo these pleasantries because they simply don’t know better, while others apparently feel these words are beneath their “pay grade.” How much effort does it take to show some gratitude for a job well done? (It’s not as if you’re being asked to solve world hunger.) The truth is, if you’re too busy to say “please” and “thank you,” don’t be surprised if others are too busy to help you in the future.

Opinions: I think this does not necessarily apply everywhere even though everybody's lifepace has quickened and this could be due to the environment in which one is working at. Also I feel that other than just looking at the surface of these issues, we should look into it and understand why it actually happens.
Firstly, I feel that it depends on the environment and the upbringing of the people. In working environments, where no common spirit are cultivated or not having a feeling of closeness with one colleagues may make certain people feel shy or not be able to relate to the people around them.
For example, if a healthy and a close-knitted working environment is cultivated, where everyone is friendly and close to each other, they will offer help in times of trouble or when one is busy due to the common spirit they share amongst themselves. And thus with this feeling of closeness people will not be as shy, as if they were strangers, to say "please" or "thank you" and the may understand each other better.
Next, a person's upbringing may also impact greatly on how they interact with other people. Regardless of economic downturn, or the quickening of life pace, if a person is not properly taught of basic courtesies and its importance since young, they may not be able to use such words to show gratitude to the people around them instead they may use other ways to thank others or they may not know how to ask a person nicely to do something, and end up commanding them. And yet the other party does not get feel that she or he has been mistreated as the person is asking of a favour without courtesy or that their help for that person had been ignored without understanding that the other party, the one without proper upbringing, had used other ways to thank that person. Thus family upbringing and teachers will have to play a huge role in cultivating a person, to ensure that that individuals will always be courteous no matter what happens, so as to ensure that people of the future generation will be able to interact and understand each other well enough such that everybody will feel respected.

“The future of education is digital. We live in an increasingly digital world, where technology is a part of our lives in so many ways. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we incorporate digital technology into education. To prepare students for higher education and future jobs, we must ensure that they are familiar with technology. Administrators who want to prepare their K-12 school for the future of education should look at the ways they use technology in the classroom. Schools that are future-ready are those that blend technology with learning seamlessly and include technology in nearly every lesson.”

I just shared my thoughts on the future of education, but what do my peers think? To find out, we decided to produce an expert roundup on the topic of the future of education. We asked 106 education experts to answer one question: “What are your thoughts on the future of education?” In part 1 of this series, we will focus on the future of K-12.

How Artificial Intelligence is Making Big Data Better Than Ever | #AI

How Artificial Intelligence is Making Big Data Better Than Ever | #AI  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The concept of Big Data is a relatively new one. It denotes the availability of vast volumes and sources of data, which were not available before. By itself, Big Data is powerful, and when combined with Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, the opportunities presented by this combination are just endless.  As big data moves to the maturity phase, firms are now looking for ways to combine the scale of AI and the agility of Big Data processes to bring about an acceleration on the delivery of the much-needed business value.

The Power of Combining AI and Big Data
Most businesses are data-driven. As a result, firms with the right type and quantity of data has the upper hand over rivals. Convergence between AI and big data is promising. Firms can now access large volumes of broken down and categorized data by their usefulness. Traditional computer processors cannot process big data. Big data can best be processed by a GPU database, which has the flexibility needed to handle a significant amount of data of different types.

Why Are Schools So Bad At Preparing Students For Modern Jobs? | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing #DigitalSkills #eSkills

Why Are Schools So Bad At Preparing Students For Modern Jobs? | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing #DigitalSkills #eSkills  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

If schools are supposed to be training the workers of the future, the growing consensus is that most of them are not doing a very good job of it.

In a trend that seems long overdue, technology-based companies are increasingly turning inward to bridge the gap between the skills they need employees have and the skills they’re actually graduating from college with.

In 8 Critical Skills For A Modern Education, we offered one view of what ‘modern workplace’ skills might look like, and have argued many times that true ’21st-century learning’ should change what work looks like all together.

(Nevermind that, in our estimation anyway, the purpose of school is not job training.)

Still, companies (for now, anyway) need human workers with certain skills that, increasingly, they just don’t have. It’s nearly 2018, and the concept of 21st-century skills is more than two decades old now.
