What is Big Data? A super simple explanation for everyone

What is Big Data? A super simple explanation for everyone | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The term “Big Data” may have been around for some time now, but there is still quite a lot of confusion about what it actually means. In truth, the concept is continually evolving and being reconsidered, as it remains the driving force behind many ongoing waves of digital transformation, including artificial intelligence, data science and the Internet of Things. But what exactly is Big Data and how is it changing our world?

Understanding Web Accessibility & Why It Is Important | #ModernEDU

Understanding Web Accessibility & Why It Is Important | #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Web accessibility is the need of the hour. I realized something a few weeks back when I went to a nearby ATM for cash withdrawal. I noticed that the machine had specific buttons embossed with dots written in Braille that could be read by a visually challenged person. This feature has been made compulsory by the central bank so that all the visually impaired people can use the facility of ATM without any hassle. It is one example how our new world has finally accepted that people with disabilities should be able to do everything that those without disabilities can. And this is what web accessibility is all about.

Defining Web Accessibility

To put it simply, web accessibility is the designing of the Website so that people – particularly people with disabilities – can use it comfortably. To elaborate further, Web accessibility defines that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and that they can contribute to the Web. It also benefits others, including older people with changing abilities due to aging.

Web Accessibility challenges all disabilities, impairments and barriers that affect the access and contribution to the web. This includes all visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, and all other neurological disabilities that make it difficult or impossible to use any website.

What are Soft Skills?

The phrase ‘soft skills’ is often used to describe the skills which characterise relationships with other people, or which are about how you approach life and work.

Others phrases that are often used for these types of skills include: ‘people skills’, ‘interpersonal skills’, ‘social skills’ or ‘transferable skills’.

‘Hard skills’, by contrast, is a phrase usually used to describe job-specific skills. Examples of such skills include professional skills like bricklaying or accountancy, medical expertise such as diagnosis and treatment, or other skills that can be taught and whose presence is testable through exams.

Ironically, for many people, the so-called soft skills are often some of the hardest skills to develop.
The Relative Importance of Hard and Soft Skills
Job-related expertise is essential in any profession and in many other careers. However, over the last twenty to thirty years, understanding has grown that perhaps the soft skills may ultimately be more important in determining levels of success.

That is, the hard skills are a basic minimum necessary in order to operate in that particular workplace. Whether or not you are successful in your career may depend on how you relate to other people and to work: the so-called soft skills.

Critical thinking ability is a better predictor of life decisions than intelligence | #ModernEDU #SoftSkills

Critical thinking ability is a better predictor of life decisions than intelligence | #ModernEDU #SoftSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

We all probably know someone who is very intelligent, but does blatantly stupid things. Despite evidence that intelligence predicts a variety of life outcomes, the relationship between intelligence and good thinking is less clear. This research explored whether critical thinking ability or intelligence was the better predictor of real life events.

Community adults and college students (n = 244) completed a critical thinking assessment, an intelligence test, and an inventory of life events. Individuals with higher critical thinking scores and higher IQs reported fewer negative life events. Critical thinking more strongly predicted life events than intelligence and significantly added to the variance explained by IQ.

There is ample evidence that critical thinking can be taught, so there is hope that teaching critical thinking skills might prevent the occurrence of negative life events. We advocate for critical thinking instruction as a way to create a better future for everyone.

The Real and Underrated Value of Visual Content Curation | #Curation

The Real and Underrated Value of Visual Content Curation | #Curation  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
One of the biggest challenges that content marketers face is creating visual content. Visual design is a specialized field requiring the tools and skills of an artist to communicate viscerally what cannot be expressed through words. The dilemma is this : how can content creators supplement their textual content with attractive images without any experience with design? The solution is curation.

How does visual content curation work?
Curation involves finding great content as opposed to creating it from scratch. As a curator, you’re the funnel that distills quality content from authoritative sources to serve it to customers. You acknowledge and link out to sources, and add your own commentary to provide readers a broader perspective.

The visual content curation process is easier as you only focus on gathering relevant images to tell a story, make a point, offer up as evidence, or reinforce the written word. The visual content you can curate from third-party sources include:

Professional photographs from copyright free image repositories/stock photo galleries. Example : Pixabay, Flickr and Pexels. Terms of commercial use are indicated, and some may require you to attribute the original creator.Screen-shots from websites can be legally published to articles or blogs discussing the content of those images. For more information on how they are covered under ‘fair use’, read this article.GIFs and animated stickers from GIPHY or Gif Bin are entertaining and dynamic. They break the monotony of text in long-form blog posts, and instantly grab attention on social media pages.

Free quote cards on Pinterest available for saving to file, sharing or printing.Data visualizations – graphs, pie charts, maps and diagrams – that communicate key facts and data quickly, clearly and easily. If you’re using them from a company’s website, proper attribution is necessary. You can also create visual interest by adding quotes – customer testimonials or expert advice – in blog or social media posts. This task can intersect with influencer outreach or cross-promotions, where you request quotes from authoritative voices in your niche who have an established social media presence. It is also a good opportunity to shine the spotlight on your loyal customers.

How to use blogging as a powerful promotional tool for small businesses | #Blogs #Marketing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Blogging is a trendy activity in today’s marketplace. Most businesses, companies, and influencers are developing and growing their professional blogs with one purpose: business growth. A blog will often improve the expansion of brands in the marketplace. The more popular a blog becomes the better awareness will the business receive.

Perceive your own business like a powerful mechanism that can satisfy a specific target audience. However, before your products or services get to satisfy anyone’s needs or solve anyone’s problems, you –the brain of the company – has to supply a consistent flow of interested customers.

How do you do that? Well, you can run a blog and deliver massive amounts of traffic to your business offer. Thousands of people will hear about your brand’s name, and that’s only because they’ve been tempted to arrive to and consume one of your blog posts. In fact, here’s a list of benefits that blogging shall bring to your business performance:

More traffic towards your business website through SEO channels.
Blog posts’ call-to-actions (CTAs) generate new leads and potential sales.

Improves your authority in the field because of the quality content you share.

A great feedback machine (ask visitors at the end of posts to share insights).

Your business can become viral because one blog post becomes viral.

Agility, blockchain and convergence: The ABCs of big data in 2017
By Martin Darling January 11, 2017News

In 2017, we will see a shift in development to stateful applications that make the most of big data.

Big data is no longer just a buzzword. In EMEA we’ve seen changes in how IT views big data.  The emphasis is no longer on just understanding big data technologies.  Businesses want to learn about new projects and most importantly, how organisations are actually benefitting from the technology in practice. MapR founder and executive chairman John Schroeder recently shared his vision on the direction of big data in 2017.

I’ve included them here with some added perspective on what it means for EMEA. As the number of big data deployments continues to grow globally, the focus for businesses will move toward the value of data.

STEM fields). STEM als Akronym bezieht sich auf:

  • science (also Naturwissenschaften)
  • and mathematics. (Die Informatik, im englischen Begriff STEM nicht vorhanden, liegt ungefähr im Schnittfeld von Mathematik, engineering und technology.)

Soft Skills List - 28 Skills to Working Smart | #ModernEDU

Soft Skills List - 28 Skills to Working Smart | #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Soft Skills List – 28 Skills to Working Smart
I originally published this soft skills list in June 2011.  I am honored to discover that more than 500,000 of you have since read my soft skills list and found it helpful.

There are 28 soft skills essential to your career success.  I wished I knew about many of these earlier in my career.   I want to share them so I can empower you to work smart and achieve more.  I look forward to your comments.

What are Soft Skills?

For a skill to be considered a soft skill, it needs to have three characteristics.

Rules for mastering this skill is not black and white –  Unlike hard skills, like math, where the rule for doing it perfectly is always the same, how effective you are at a soft skill changes depends on your emotional state, external circumstance, and the type of people you interact with.

This skill is portable and valuable to any job/career – Because soft skills are about your inner strength and interpersonal effectiveness, as long as you work with people, these skills are valuable to your career.

Mastering this skill is an ongoing journey – You can reach a level of competency in it but you can always encounter new situations or people that will test your soft skills and push you to learn more.

Foster A Growth Mindset in Your Class Using These Strategies | #ModernEDU

Foster A Growth Mindset in Your Class Using These Strategies | #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

August , 2017
In her celebrated book ‘Mindset: The New Psychology of Success’, Stanford university psychologist Carol S. Dweck makes a strong case backed up with  scientific evidence for the power of mindset in shaping one’s success or failure in almost every facet of our life. Those with a fixed mindset mentality tend to be limited in their learning scope believing that their inner traits and abilities are biologically determined. On the other hand, people with a growth mindset embrace change and tend to learn more from life experiences because for them concepts such as skills, abilities and competencies are not fixated  and can be developed through a process of error and trial.

In today’s post, we are sharing with you this handy infographic we created based on Marcus Guido’s post ’10 Ways Teachers Can Instill a Growth Mindset in Students’. Guido walks you through the different strategies you can use with your students to cultivate a growth mindset in your class and ultimately enhance students learning.  Read his post to learn more about each of the strategies featured here.

Diana Jaimes V.'s curator insight, September 2, 2017 9:50 AM
First, this article led me to consider mindset shaping as a powerful tool for learning as any other aspect of life. It explains the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset that normally refers to people constantly learning from any experience. Since their capabilities are not fixed, these people are never closed to a learning experience and always use the trial and error learning. They proposed an infographic with several strategies to foster a growth mindset in our students some of the steps include the use of diverse teaching strategies, explanations of purposes of abstract thinking, teaching values, among others.

The 9 features of a perfect content writing environment | #Curation #Blogs #Creativity #Collaboration #ICT  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
If you want to be a successful content marketer, you need to have the time, energy, and motivation to produce large volumes of high-quality work. Even the most naturally motivated writers may find themselves unable to move forward if they aren’t in an environment conducive to that production.

Ideally, you’ll be able to find, in general terms:

Inspiration: to stimulate your creativity and help you come up with more original ideas.

Focus: to keep you as productive as possible and minimize time waste.

Comfort: to reduce your stress levels (and risk of injury).
Collaboration: to keep you in close contact with other people.
