OpenAI's artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT is the fastest-growing app in history.
This is according to a UBS study (via CBS News(Opens in a new window)), which claims that ChatGPT had 13 million unique visitors per day in January, which is more than double the visitors it had in December. ChatGPT has only been around two months (can you believe it?), and it already has 100 million monthly users, the study concluded.

ChatGPT is only two months old, but we've spent the time since it debuted debating how powerful it really is — and how we should regulate it.
Just because it can be helpful doesn't mean it can't also be harmful: Students can use it to write essays for them, and bad actors can use it to create malware. Even without malicious intent from users, it can generate misleading information, reflect biases, generate offensive content, store sensitive information, and — some people fear — degrade everyone's critical thinking skills due to over-reliance. Then there's the ever-present (if a bit unfounded) fear that RoBoTs ArE tAkInG oVeR.
And ChatGPT can do all of that without much — if any — oversight from the U.S. government.

OpenAI, the AI research firm behind ChatGPT, has released a new tool to distinguish between AI-generated and human-generated text.
Even though it’s impossible to detect AI-written text with 100% accuracy, OpenAI believes its new tool can help to mitigate false claims that humans wrote AI-generated content.
In an announcement, OpenAI says its new AI Text Classifier can limit the ability to run automated misinformation campaigns, use AI tools for academic fraud, and impersonate humans with chatbots.

OpenAI, the company behind DALL-E and ChatGPT, has released a free tool that it says is meant to “distinguish between text written by a human and text written by AIs.” It warns the classifier is “not fully reliable” in a press release and “should not be used as a primary decision-making tool.” According to OpenAI, it can be useful in trying to determine whether someone is trying to pass off generated text as something that was written by a person.
The tool, known as a classifier, is relatively simple, though you will have to have a free OpenAI account to use it. You just paste text into a box, click a button, and it’ll tell you whether it thinks the text is very unlikely, unlikely, unclear if it is, possibly, or likely AI-generated.

The arrival of AI creation tools has greatly expanded the opportunities for content creators, but concerns remain about the use of such, and whether the work spat out by these apps and tools can actually, legally be used in your process.
The answer, right now, is yes – but we are also seeing some cautionary tales and elements, which could influence your thinking around your adoption of AI creation tools in your process. The trick then is to utilize these newer tools in a more comprehensive content process, as opposed to relying on them as a quick-hitter strategy – and to do that, you need to understand the key best practices and notes, based on evolving adoption and activity. In order to keep you abreast of the latest, here’s a quick round-up of some of the key AI creation notes from this week.

Is ChatGPT the new teacher’s aide?
Teachers have said that the artificial intelligence tool, which can write anything with just a simple prompt, could save them hours of work—a game-changer at a time when teachers have a lot on their plates and stress levels are high.
Even so, some teachers say they worry that using the tool could strip away some of the creativity and relational aspects of teaching or introduce bias into lessons or feedback on student work.

One use of ChatGPT, the superstar chatbot created by generative AI firm OpenAI, is drafting privacy notices. Ironically, ChatGPT itself is under scrutiny from data protection experts.
While the various uses of ChatGPT – and other generative AI – can raise ethical and legal concerns regarding the violation of data privacy, as Infosecurity previously investigated, some experts are questioning the very existence of OpenAI’s chatbot for privacy reasons.

Some of the world’s biggest academic journal publishers have banned or curbed their authors from using the advanced chatbot, ChatGPT. Because the bot uses information from the internet to produce highly readable answers to questions, the publishers are worried that inaccurate or plagiarised work could enter the pages of academic literature.
Several researchers have already listed the chatbot as a co-author on academic studies, and some publishers have moved to ban this practice. But the editor-in-chief of Science, one of the top scientific journals in the world, has gone a step further and forbidden any use of text from the program in submitted papers.

OpenAI has launched its first subscription plan for ChatGPT, opening up the popular AI model for premium use just two months after its public launch.
The new plan, called ChatGPT Plus and announced in a company blog post on Wednesday, will charge subscribers $20 for monthly use of ChatGPT’s tools. Users will get priority access to ChatGPT “during peak times,” faster responses and “priority access to new features and improvements,” the company wrote. The subscription is only available initially in the United States and will roll out to a waitlist first.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the announcement. The company also noted in its post that a waitlist is now available for an upcoming ChatGPT API.

The maker of ChatGPT is trying to curb its reputation as a freewheeling cheating machine with a new tool that can help teachers detect if a student or artificial intelligence wrote that homework.
The new AI Text Classifier launched Tuesday by OpenAI follows a weeks-long discussion at schools and colleges over fears that ChatGPT’s ability to write just about anything on command could fuel academic dishonesty and hinder learning.
OpenAI cautions that its new tool – like others already available – is not foolproof. The method for detecting AI-written text “is imperfect and it will be wrong sometimes,” said Jan Leike, head of OpenAI’s alignment team tasked to make its systems safer.
The toothpaste is out of the tube! ChatGPT is here and, whether we like it or not, we can’t go back to a time before its arrival. The question now is how do we, as educators, move forward? In case you’ve missed all the hubbub, ChatGPT is a new, advanced chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022 that can understand, respond to, and converse with users’ written input similarly to humans—it can even answer questions, tell stories, and engage in conversations.

It's also quite sobering, as there are already countless examples of how it changes the game for black hats of all stripes. In one of the first proofs-of-concept, NYU professor Brendan Dolan-Gavitt used ChatGPT to exploit a buffer overflow vulnerability. Other examples include writing malware with lightning speed and crafting convincing, grammatically correct phishing emails.
The weaponization of AI within cybersecurity is not new, but what excites me the most about ChatGPT is its potential for closing information security's biggest gap: the lack of sufficient talent, in both breadth and depth of cybersecurity skills (i.e., specializations). To illustrate this further, here are three ways ChatGPT will change infosec in 2023.

Since the unveiling of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late November 2022, the large language model (LLM) has been the source of endless speculation—experts have predicted that the technology will do everything from abolishing high school English classes to displacing white-collar workers to highjacking democracy. The program has caused particular consternation within the education sector, as school systems across the country have banned its use, prompted by fears that it will become a tool for widespread cheating. The concerns are understandable given the program’s sophistication—this week, ChatGPT passed both the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) and a final exam in a Wharton School MBA course.
