For years now, scientists have been trying to develop microscopic robots that can swim through bodily fluids and repair damaged cells or deliver medicine. Now, scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany believe they've got the perfect design -- in the form of scallops so small, they can barely be seen by the naked eye. These micro-robo-scallops move back and forth to swim through blood, eyeball fluids and other liquids inside our body. The scientists believe mimicking the way a true scallop swims is ideal, due to a number of reasons.

Après des mois de cours théoriques, rien de tel qu'un concours par équipes pour mettre en application ce qu'on a appris. C'est du moins la coutume à l'université de Stanford, où les étudiants en mécanique se sont livrés cette année à un combat de robots.

The world's first hotel staffed entirely by robots is set to open in Japan later this year, promoted with the slogan "a commitment for evolution".

The Henn-na Hotel will open in the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Nagasaki Prefecture in July with the hope that by employing "actroid androids" - robots that mimic humans - it will be able to significantly reduce costs.

"Actroid androids" will mimic human behaviour like breathing, blinking and making eye contact.(Huis Ten Bosch)

10 robots will staff the 72-room hotel, capable of cleaning rooms, transporting luggage and greeting guests at the hotel's reception. Rooms will range in price from ¥7,000 (£39) to ¥14,000 (£77).

Here we see IHMC Robotics performing a simple maneuver with an ATLAS robot where the programmers sent a single footstep plan to the humanoid. Using its onboard sensors and artificial balance, ATLAS is able to repeatedly climb up and down a small pile of cinderblocks without tumbling. It's a task even a toddler could handle, and ATLAS is roughly on the same development cycle. Except that toddlers aren't physically capable of picking up said cinderblocks and throwing them around a room. [IHMC Robotics via IEEE Spectrum]

To date, no robotics scientist has been able to create ultra-flexible tactile skin. Either the sensor has been too big or the electronics not sufficiently flexible.Now, however, Dr Dahiya believes he is on the cusp of a breakthrough and that he has found a way of incorporating electronics and sensors on bendable silicon-based surfaces that will be 50 micrometers thick – thinner than the aluminium foil we use every day.

A point of inflection, it explains, is a point on a curve at which the curvature or concavity changes sign from plus to minus (or vice versa). Since this sounds like a smaller deal than the wholesale upheaval prophesied by Brynjolfsson and McAfee, Grossman might have got more mileage out of "tipping point", which, though different to inflection, seems to me to get closer to the nub of the question.
