In a filing with the IRS, OpenAI Inc., OpenAI’s nonprofit org, disclosed that it awarded a grant to Duke University researchers for a project titled “Research AI Morality.” Contacted for comment, an OpenAI spokesperson pointed to a press release indicating the award is part of a larger, three-year, $1 million grant to Duke professors studying “making moral AI.”

Anthropic, an AI company, released its latest large language model-powered chatbot, Claude 2, last week, the latest development in a race to build bigger and better artificial intelligence models.

Claude 2 is an improvement on Anthropic’s previous AI model, Claude 1.3, particularly in terms of its ability to write code based on written instructions and the size of its “context window,” which means users can now input entire books and ask Claude 2 questions based on their content. These improvements suggest Claude 2 is now in the same league as GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, the models which power OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, like OpenAI’s models, Claude 2 still exhibits stereotype bias and ‘hallucinates’ — in other words, it makes things up. And there remain larger questions about the race between AI companies to bring out more powerful AI models without addressing the risks they pose.

OpenAI has officially launched Sora.

Early last year, OpenAI introduced the AI video generator. It has been quietly in development to a select group of testers, until being unleashed to the public on Monday. CEO Sam Altman immediately kicked off the livestream by announcing the Sora public release. Sora will be available today to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the U.S. and to many other countries.

On Thursday, OpenAI once again shook up the AI world with a video generation model called Sora.

The demos showed photorealistic videos with crisp detail and complexity, based off of simple text prompts. A video based on the prompt "Reflections in the window of a train traveling through the Tokyo suburbs" looked like it was filmed on a phone, shaky camera work and reflections of train passengers included. No weird distorted hands in sight.

On Thursday, the makers of ChatGPT and DALL-E announced Sora, a text-to-video diffusion model. As of today, Sora is available to red teamers, or experts who adversarially test the model for harms and risks. Per the announcement, it is also available to a select group or visual artists, designers, and filmmakers "to gain feedback on how to advance the model to be most helpful for creative professionals.

The feature is in beta, works everywhere ChatGPT does — it should be particularly helpful on mobile devices — and is available today on an opt-in basis to ChatGPT Plus subscribers everywhere but the UK and EU. On Thursday, OpenAI announced a plugin system for its ChatGPT AI assistant. The plugins give ChatGPT the ability to interact with the wider world through the Internet, including booking flights, ordering groceries, browsing the web, and more. Plugins are bits of code that tell ChatGPT how to use an external resource on the Internet.

Basically, if a developer wants to give ChatGPT the ability to access any network service (for example: "looking up current stock prices") or perform any task controlled by a network service (for example: "ordering pizza through the Internet"), it is now possible, provided it doesn't go against OpenAI's rules.
