Surprise! Details of the Raspberry Pi 5 are out, and while you can't get your hands on a board just yet, you can bask in the new features and improvements.
At the top of them is a new chip, designed in‑house in Cambridge, UK.
The Broadcom BCM2712 quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor is three generations ahead of the one used in the Raspberry Pi 4, and is not only faster than the old chip -- between two and three times faster -- but it also consumes less power, which in turn should mean it runs cooler. Here at Arduino we are thrilled to announce a new, revolutionary revision of the iconic UNO board, which will expand the concept of the open-source brand’s most iconic and popular product while providing the maker community with a long-awaited update on performance and possibilities. The Arduino UNO R4 indeed preserves the well-known features of the UNO family – standard form factor, shield compatibility, 5V operating voltage, outstanding robustness – while offering no less than a 32-bit Cortex®-M4 and a 3-to-16x increase in clock speed, memory and flash storage. On Thursday, BeagleBoard unveiled PocketBeagle, a tiny, open source, USB key fob computer that works as a development board for both beginners and professionals.
PocketBeagle—which, at 35 x 56 x 5 mm, is smaller than a credit card—features a simple, open source hardware design, and a catalog-available, well-documented processor, according to a press release. This board can replace some costly hardware, and also offers a solution for rapid prototyping without slowing the path to production, which can lower risk as well.
More about Open Source
10 Ubuntu tips to make the open source OS work for you How to find the right Linux distribution for you Open source is driving digital transformation, according to mainstream businesses 20 quick tips to make Linux networking easier (free PDF) This low-cost Linux computer offers "tremendous expansibility," according to the release. The company also offers the chance to learn programming from online educators.
For hobbyists, "PocketBeagle is small and flexible enough to fit in gaming, 3D printing, robotics or other electronics projects; and affordable enough to dedicate one to live permanently in each of those different projects," according to the release.
"PocketBeagle not only includes a 1-GHz processor, but also industrial-oriented peripherals and microcontrollers optimized for interfacing to the physical world," the release stated. This could also make it a good option for Internet of Things (IoT) experiments, especially in businesses. When Sphero laid off 45 employees in early 2018, the Boulder, Co.-based company explained the difficult decision as an effort to return its focus to the education market after a foray into creating consumer toys. Today, the robotic toymaker is following through by adding a big building block to its educational offerings.
Sphero has acquired littleBits, a New York City-based company best known for its electronic kits and instructional resources that introduce kids to building and programming by hand.
“We are both pursuing the same goal,” says Sphero CEO Paul Berberian, which he describes as providing students with playful tools that nurture creativity as they learn to use and build with technology. “But we have different ways of bringing that to life.” His company’s flagship offerings are robots that come pre-built with LED lights, sensors and motors that respond to light and gestures, and which kids can control via an app on a computer, smartphone or tablet. Fabricating a circuit board isn’t tough but it takes a while. The back and forth, the bugs, and all of the shipping costs can turn a small project into a big problem. That’s why Botfactory raised $1.3 million to stick a PCB printer on your desk.
Founded by NYU grad students Nicolas Vansnick and Carlos Ospina along with NYU professor Michael Knox, BotFactory came about when Vansnick and Ospina needed to make a PCB for a class project. Nearly every student in the class failed because they couldn’t get circuit boards made in time and each iteration took weeks to complete.
“This lesson was tremendous – if this was a problem that was typical for any project, then the solution would revolutionize how electronics could be prototyped and fabricated,” said Vansnick. “Up until then, everybody had been trying to miniaturize electronics and chips, but not the processes that are employed to create PCBs.” Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: http://www.scoop.it/t/21st-century-innovative-technologies-and-developments/?tag=PCB

At New York’s Toy Fair trade show over the weekend, Mattel unveiled its new, $300 3D Printer, the “ThingMaker,” which will allow children to print their own toys at home. The device works in conjunction with a 3D printing app developed in collaboration with Autodesk that offers a simple interface for designing items that can then come to life via Mattel’s ThingMaker as well as with other standard 3D printers already on the market.
The accompanying app is actually key to making Mattel’s 3D printing experience more accessible to a wider audience.
While there are affordably priced 3D printers available today, the software that works with them can sometimes have a learning curve that can hinder adoption. With the new application, live now on iOS and Android, the goal was to make it easy enough for anyone to design their own toys – even younger children.
