How to Find Amazing Content That No One Knows About...Yet | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Sending a newsletter in itself is not difficult. But curating an excellent newsletter that people love and find valuable is much more challenging. Creating a successful newsletter takes a lot more thought and effort than linking a handful of articles in an email template. You need a trusted arsenal of content curation tools to help you manage all the content.

Let’s take a closer look at what it takes to be a curator, the content curation tools available to you, and how you can find content that few people are already sharing. To get started, there are three things a curator should do before they start to source their content.

40 Maps that explain the Internet and its history

40 Maps that explain the Internet and its history | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

good example of content curation at work is the Vox feature collection entitled "40 maps that explain the internet", which showcases in a highly digestible and visual format where the Internet came from, how it works, and how it's used by people around the world.

Although at first glance this may look just as a list of maps with descriptions, there's a lot of curation work that can be appreciated by looking just a bit beyond the surface.

a) Titles and descriptions are well crafted, short, focused, but consistently clear and to the point.

b) The 40 maps are intelligently organized into six different groups:

  1. How the Internet was created
  2. The Internet around the world
  3. Threats to the Internet
  4. The geography of online services
  5. How America gets online
  6. How we use the Internet

c) Images of maps sourced from elsewhere are properly credited and linked.

To the ignorant eye, this will look like "oh, just another collection of maps", but to the avid reader, scholar and to the curious enough to look beyond appearances, the value of this editorial work is on how it perfectly hides the amount of complexity and research work it has required while organizing and presenting an extremely clear and comprehensive body of valuable information on the chosen topic.

Curated by Timothy B. Lee together with editor Eleanor Barkhorn,

designer Uy Tieu and developer Yuri Victor.

A good example of curation at work. 8/10

Robin Good's curator insight, April 24, 2014 3:18 PM

How can content curation in a niche information area be monetized? Ask Joe Wilkert.

He writes: "There’s too much content out there anyway and I certainly don’t need access to even more of it. What I really need is more curation and less volume.

I want someone else to read it all and then tell me what I absolutely need to read.

They act as a filter and I pay them because they save me time and make me smarter."

The article points to the added value that traditional content publishers can offer their readers by opening the gates to community curators, who, by doing what they like the most, can bring back lots of more subscribers and attention to their brands.

"...There are sports experts, business experts, local community experts, etc. These curators are reading everything you’re publishing and picking the best of the best... They in turn publish their lists to a whole new set of subscribers; these readers pay for access to only the content recommended by the curator, not the full editions.

The best curators float to the top and drive more subscriptions than the others and you pay them a commission for each subscriber they bring in. Curators establish brand names for themselves, as in, “hey, if you’re into travel you need to subscribe to Bob Thomas…he finds all the best travel articles so I don’t have to.

But there's more, as Mr Wilker points out. The opportunities don't end there.

Rightful. Recommended. 8/10

What Makes a Good Content Curator?

What Makes a Good Content Curator? | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

"Sharing good content shows you understand what’s interesting and valuable to your target markets. It will help you increase your followers and establish your credibility. "

Excerpted from the article:

A good content curator has to sift through tons of content, quickly and efficiently, finding what is both relevant and good quality.

So what does a good content curator look like?

1) Really Long Arms:
You have the expanded reach to know the smaller players with a unique perspective, the powerhouse publishers, and all of the niche players. This allows for a healthy variety of content, with differing perspectives.

2) Super Fast Scanning Eyes:
An efficient content curator knows how to scan an article for legitimacy, value, and relevance to their target market.

3) A Raised Eyebrow:
Each time you come upon something new, your eyebrow is already up, because you’re there to sniff it out to make sure it’ll pass the test. People will lose interest in what you share and you will hurt your credibility if you share content that isn’t high quality.

4) A Belly Full of Hunger:
Good content curators love what they do and are passionate about traversing the wide expanse of the web to find the best content possible."

Robin Good's insight:

Lindsey Weintraub at SocialMediaToday has a short but valuable guide to four key traits a good curator really needs to have.

From the ability to search and tap into sources that should not be what everyone else is looking at, to the ability to know in and out its chosen niche of interest and its players, the good content curator has an uncanny talent for scanning, selecting and triple-verifying anything potentially interesting before even considering showcasing in its selections.

Rightful. Good for anyone just starting out with curation. 7/10

Curation Is As Important as Creation

Curation Is As Important as Creation | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you are interested in understanding how "content curation" differentiates itself from simple re-sharing and re-blogging here is a great article by Chris DeLine.

Great advice for anyone wanting to become an effective content curator: “Whether in tweets, in blog posts, in podcasts, or in newsletters, be ruthless with your attention.

...

Some adopt a strategy of blanket-curation, throwing everything new or fresh or remotely interesting online and letting other consumers make their own value distinctions.

Others assume the role of tastemaker, selectively making the decisions themselves.

Both have their place, but the former contributes to what Jonathan Haidt calls “the paradox of abundance,” which he says “undermines the quality of our engagement.”

How many content-overload websites can you monitor before you become overwhelmed by volume? How many share-explosions does it take before you remove a friend from your Facebook feed? How many Tumblr pages can you pay attention to before the reblogs become a blur?

...

Thoughtful, honest, and caring curation isn’t entirely different than creation.

After all, the topics you choose to research, to blog about, and to discuss with friends all begin with the process of sifting through the media abyss yourself and singling out worthwhile information."

What really counts is to create content that is useful, meaningful and helpful for others, whether from direct hand authorship, or by curating the best existing resources.

Insightful. 8/10

Why is Digital Curation so Important for Educators in 2018? By Naomi Timperley

Why is Digital Curation so Important for Educators in 2018? By Naomi Timperley | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

I’ve been working with schools, colleges and universities for nearly 8 years. Working to promote entrepreneurship and digital skills to make young people more employable and teach them how to innovate. Digital research is becoming increasingly important and educators and students need to know how to curate it.

The internet represents a fundamental shift in how educators and students learn and engage their coursework, gather information, and conduct academic research. We need to know how to do online research. From academic standpoint, digital research skills enable us to be better and more aware as learners. And on a larger scale, students who are digitally literate are more capable of making contributions to the world. Not only as professionals, but as people.

There is not one way to curate content. It's important to realize that.

Why Content Marketing Fails Slides via Growth Hackers

Why Content Marketing Fails Slides via Growth Hackers | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
[Content Marketing, Must Read] Great slides by Rand Fishkin on what makes an effective content marketing strategy. He outlines 5 reasons why your strategy might fail: You believed the biggest myth content marketing ever told the world You made content without a community You invested in content creation, but not in it's amplification You ignored content's most powerful channel: SEO You gave up too fast

Excellent and exhaustive punch to the gut of the many "content marketing" myths that exist. I would've added a section on Mark Schaefer's Content Shock, but that 1,000 word post is for another time. Between then (when I write the rejoinder) and now read Rand Fishkin's riff on why "inbound marketing" fails and see if you recognize some of your myths, urban legends and untruths about content marketing.

Love the almost RANDOM case view (see the beard slides) since that journey is so accurate to how journeys start, are sustained and end up in a purchase or subscription.

Also discusses visual marketing tend in a cool way (nope, nope, yes on Google).

How content marketing works?

Get ready for the long, entertaining and highly informative trip. I like the section about "content without a community", a real eye opener.

Congratulations to Scoop.it on reaching 1M users. I wrote this post about my favorite 20 Scoopers a few months ago. It seems to be having a  REDUX moment today as Scoop.it reaches a major milestone. There are several people such as @Therese Torris@Beth Kanter and others I would add now (such is the danger of making a list like this). But you can't go wrong following any of these great, kind, smart, creative and generous content curators on Scoop.it. Marty

The Five Laws of The Content Curation Economy by Steve Rosenbaum

The Five Laws of The Content Curation Economy by Steve Rosenbaum | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

From Robin Good's insight:

"Steve Rosenbaum (the author of Curation Nation) strikes some pretty powerful chords that fully resonate with my vision and expectations about the future of content curation.

On the assumption that "The speed, scale, and number of distinct elements of produced content will double every 24 months." (call it Rosenbaum law) he rightly asserts that, as if there was already enough content, we are going to be literally inundated by tons of it soon..."

Where To Find Good Alternative Sources for Content Curation

Where To Find Good Alternative Sources for Content Curation | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you are looking for ways to expand your horizon of content sources that you can use to find valuable content for your curated news channel, Pawan Deshpande, founder and CEO of Curata, has done an excellent job of listing and describing the many alternatives available to you.

While many beginner curators rely on their set of RSS feeds and on simple web searches to find new and interesting stuff on their topic of interest, there are a dozen more content source types that can be tapped to find relevant stuff. This article helps you start learning where to look to find them.

Useful. Resourceful. 8/10

If you are serious about your job search or developing your career, you cannot ignore content curation. Not only you need to read a lot of articles in your field to stay up to date but you also need to add some analysis and offer your opinion if you want to build and keep your reputation as an expert. 99% of recruiters are using internet to search for candidates.

THE OFFICIAL ANDREASCY's insight:

“Learning is most effective when it’s personalised; it means something to the learner. That happens when people feel they are participants and investors in their own learning, shaping what and how they learn, and able to articulate its value to them.” — Leadbeater, Charles

Famous Self-Taughts (Autodidacts): Leonardo Da Vinci, William Blake, Herb Rits (in addition to Virginia Woolf, Mark Twain, John D. Rockefeller, and many others)

Definitely well worth a read

Avery's curator insight, March 25, 2013 11:56 PM

My Thoughts:

You can't teach someone how to learn. You can give them helpful tips and advice, but a single structure for education is not going to work for everyone. It's so much harder for people to learn their true potential, to reach their goals, when they're only shown a single path to them. You show them the path through the forest, but what if there's a rock face nearby that also leads up to where they want to go, and what if they happen to be a fantastic rock climber? It just makes more sense to show someone a map if you can, instead of directing them towards only one path.

Beth, when you say 'new beginners tool' what do you mean? I use diigo as it gives me so many capacities, like highlight and notes and very good ways for sharing. For good beginner tool you mean for those new to curation and/or social bookmarking?
