Education has been a recurring theme throughout the many programs of the NYC Media Lab, a public-private partnership where I serve as an Executive Director. How will virtual and augmented reality change the classroom? How can teachers use immersive media to educate citizens and keep our communities vibrant? In what ways can enterprises leverage innovation to better train employees and streamline workflows?

These are just a few of the top-of-mind questions that NYC Media Lab’s consortium is thinking about as we enter the next wave of media transformation.

I’ve put together a list of virtual reality discussion prompts you can tailor to your classroom. If your students are using headsets with Google Expeditions, or a Google Cardboard connected app, you can have students pause to talk about what they see.

Recently, the world of virtual reality was shaken up when the popular Merge Cube by Merge VR dropped in price from $15 to just a dollar at many Walmart stores. When using specific apps, these cubes showcase different experiences as you rotate the block around with your hands. If you haven’t held a Merge Cube yet, they're made of a soft rubber material that’s comparable to a stiffer stress ball. (If you want to test out the apps first, you can print out a temporary paper cube.)

he Internet has brought the entire world right into our own homes. The world’s knowledge is just a click away. Our students have benefitted and continue to benefit from the wonders of the web in their own learning. Virtual field trips, the topic of our post today, is one simple example of how the web technologies have tremendously transformed learning and teaching. Without leaving their own desks and right from within their classroom, students get to visit popular world museums, explore ancient monuments in Egypt and Rome, tour major cities in the world using web tools that are readily available either for free or at a cheap cost.
