Digital learning is real-world learning. That's why blended on-campus and online study is best

Digital learning is real-world learning. That's why blended on-campus and online study is best | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Social distancing and lockdowns have disrupted university study for the past 18 months. Students are understandably stressed as shown by a dramatic drop in student satisfaction across Australia reported in the annual Student Experience Survey. Federal Education Minister Alan Tudge has drawn attention to this in calling for a “return” to on-campus study.

But the world is increasingly digital. Old notions of lecture halls will not help graduates to thrive in their careers. We need university study that supports students to succeed by preparing them for a digital future.

What do We Know about Student Experiences of Online Learning?

What do We Know about Student Experiences of Online Learning? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Higher education institutions have been scrambling to meet the demand for remote and online courses. This has been due in part to general growth trends in online enrollment, but it has also been accelerated out of response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of this, we have focused on helping faculty teach more effectively online.

In this blog, we turn our attention to the learning experiences these courses provide students. Understanding students’ experiences in online courses has implications on the effectiveness of teaching strategies. A look at published research shows several factors related to the quality of student experiences that faculty can address when developing their online courses.

5 Ways Technology Is Making Students Anxious

5 Ways Technology Is Making Students Anxious | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Psychological well-being as measured by self-esteem, life satisfaction, and happiness suddenly decreased amongst students after 2012. This decrease in psychological well-being and increase in anxiety levels are linked to the advent of smartphone technology and screen time.

A new study that involved more than a million American high school students, found that adolescents who spent more time on screens (e.g., social media, the Internet, texting, gaming) and less time on non-screen activities, experienced lower psychological well-being. Adolescents who spend little time on electronic communication were the happiest.

How VR and AR Will Change How Art is Experienced |  Education Technology Guy

How VR and AR Will Change How Art is Experienced |  Education Technology Guy | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Virtual and augmented reality have become a trend more recently due to advances in artificial intelligence. They’ve grown to be more commonly utilized tools for interpretation of ideas in a variety of fields. VR is an immersive technology experience. Though it was commonly used in the gaming industry, it’s now being applied to a variety of fields. For example, companies can make use of simulated interviews and best choose candidates for the job when recruiting and training. AR on the other hand, supplements and enhances reality that already exists. Social media filters are a good example of this. Another example, the furniture company IKEA recently used this immersive technology to help shoppers envision how furniture would look inside their home."

VR and AR more and more are being applied to a variety of fields. More notably associated with gaming, VR and AR are proving useful in less glorified areas like job interviews and job training. In addition, it is enhancing the shopping experience, saving time and money. Lastly, in the area of art, it is being used to spice up exhibits giving patrons an alternative way of appreciating artwork. All in all, VR and AR are revolutionizing our world, pushing the boundaries of creativity and enhancing how people perceive it.

Matching Student Resources With Student Experiences | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
A child growing up today has unprecedented access to books, from audiobooks played through apps to the seemingly old but always relevant printed book. In this world of easy access to text, there is still something missing: books that represent all children. A student of color must scour the children's aisles to find a book that even in the most remote sense reflects him or her.

The first weeks may be critical for the 2020 cohort

The first weeks may be critical for the 2020 cohort | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
First year students at UK universities will be imminently beginning some kind of an on-campus experience this year. It will be unlike anything they, or staff working in HEI,s have ever experienced.

Many anticipate that we may have only a month or so to help them bed in before a second wave causes furthers local or national lockdowns, so it’s imperative we get this first engagement right. I propose there are five areas we have to work on immediately to help freshers feel they have become part of our learning communities, before reversion to online learning becomes highly likely. If all of us Cassandras are wrong (and we must hope so!), this is still good practice for welcoming students whose 2020 pre-HE learning experiences are likely to have been grim.

Learning is a process, not an event... events mainly give the illusion of learning... | Donald Clark Plan B

Learning is a process, not an event... events mainly give the illusion of learning... | Donald Clark Plan B | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Part of the problem with all this talk about 'learning experience' is it's questionable whether learning is actually experienced at all."

This brilliant quote, by Leonard Houx, skewers the recent hubris around ‘learning experiences’. Everything is an ‘experience’ and what is needed is some awareness of good and bad learning experiences. Unfortunately, all too often what we see are single event, over-engineered, media heavy, video, animation and single courses that research shows, result, not in significant learning, but…

1) Clickthrough (click on this cartoon head, click on this to see X; click on option on MCQ) that allows the learner to skate across the surface of the content,

2) Cognitive overload (overuse of media)

3) Diversionary activity (infantile gamification).

Digital experience insights survey 2018: findings from students in UK further and higher education

Digital experience insights survey 2018: findings from students in UK further and higher education | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Key messages:

Prepare students for digital learning
Arriving students need to know what to expect from
digital learning. Our findings point to the key practices
and tools that students find useful in each sector but
there is no one-size-fits-all solution. This is where
institutions can make excellent use of their local
insights data.

Make bring your own devices (BYOD) work
Most students now bring their own devices for
learning but many can’t use them to access subjectspecialist software and online content. Students learn
more efficiently if they have access to the full range
of learning tools on a device of their choice.

Assistive technology is for everyone
One in five students is using assistive or adaptive
technologies, often by choice rather than necessity.
Institutions should recognise the value of ‘inclusive
for all’ and investigate how digital technologies can
support inclusion in learning and assessment.

Help students stay happy and well
FE students would benefit from better access to
health and wellbeing services online. HE students
would benefit from more help to stay safe online.
All students want to feel that they belong, so their
log-in should give access to personalised services,
student societies and social networks.Digital experience insights survey 2018: findings from students in

Dirty word? Thinking about customers | Wonkhe | Comment | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
No-one really wants to think about students as ‘customers’. And there’s plenty of debate out there about the challenges of consumerism and the threats posed to collaboration and collegiality. But does that mean that universities can’t learn from the innovative ways other industries work with customers? On the contrary, they might find there’s quite a lot to learn.

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Students say that in order for high schools and colleges to better serve them, it is important to challenge the assumption that students are digital natives. This starts with educating professors about the technological diversity in their classrooms and providing students with workshops and engaging videos to help them learn without shame.

Well worth considering. Particularly when it comes to using tech for study purposes, I think many teenagers really need some help.

Llandrillo Library's curator insight, June 27, 2017 5:06 AM
The idea of being a digital native has been unsubstantiated for a while but the myth still persists - this dispels some of that. Remember it's more likely to be digitally confident not competent

When EDUCAUSE members identified their top 10 priorities for 2017, it was clear that data analytics is expected to play a big role. Data-informed decision-making is No. 3 on the list, and data management and governance is No. 6. Other initiatives, such as student success and completion (No. 2) and strategic leadership (No. 4), also are leaning more heavily on data than ever before.
