5 blended-learning myths to bust in 2019 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

This piece is co-authored by Chelsea Waite, research fellow, education, at the Christensen Institute.

In February 2016, the Christensen Institute debuted the Blended Learning Universe (BLU)—an online hub of blended learning resources—in response to more and more schools across the U.S. implementing a blended-learning strategy for students. Researchers at the Institute define blended learning as a formal education program that must have three components: it must be part online, with students having some control over the time, place, path, or pace of their learning; it must occur, in part, in a brick-and-mortar location away from home; and the modalities along a student’s learning path must be connected to provide an integrated learning experience. While there is great diversity of practice, the Institute identifies seven common models leveraged by educators:

Recalibrating Our Approach to Misinformation | EdSurge News | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

In the past year, many educational institutions began to address the challenge of digital misinformation. As head of a multi-institutional projectthat addresses these issues, I found this heartening. Less encouraging, however, was the persistence of many myths about how misinformation works, what its risks are and how we might address it. In the hope we might have a more productive 2019, I thought I’d outline some of those myths and realities below.

Many digital citizenship myths still have some of us doubting the intrinsic need for its practices. One thing is certain: today, we acknowledge that the digital citizen is a global citizen.

I like the last of the myth list best... This doesn't go in depth on this list but provides and opening for thought and discussion...

excerpt:
15. District “non-negotiables” are an appropriate response to instructional alignment.
 16. Teachers are “the problem.”
 17. A pre-test for the test to predict the performance on the test that itself is meant to predict understanding is an efficient way to process learning.
 18. Engagement means learning.
 19. Adoption of trendy learning tools will automatically improve learning.
 20. Ignoring trendy learning tools helps keep the focus on “what’s important.”
 21. Depth of knowledge doesn’t matter.
 22. Curiosity is for cats.

The twenty-two myths listed in this article bust delusions, myths, and fallacies that rule the minds of policy makers. One will be surprised to see how mistaken we are about differential learning and the use of technology in class. Further to this, is the fallacy that engagement means learning, and that collaboration in the learning process should be constant!

10 Ways Data Can Sabotage Your Teaching

10 Ways Data Can Sabotage Your Teaching | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Functionally, the purpose of assessment is to provide data to revise planned instruction.

In seeing what a student understands, the best path for moving forward towards mastery can be planned based on those results—the “data,” as it were.

While there are inherent (and perhaps crippling) flaws with any form of assessment (what is the best way to determine what a student understands?), assessment design is a topic for another day. For now, it can help to simply understand data better—for its benefits and perhaps more importantly, its limits.

How to respond to learning-style believers

How to respond to learning-style believers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
“What do you mean, I shouldn’t accommodate people’s learning styles? You can’t tell me people don’t learn differently! I see it in the classroom all the time!”

Maybe you’ve heard that from a classroom presenter (I have). Or maybe you’ve heard this from a client:

“Be sure to include narration for the audio learners! And add lots of drag-and-drops for the kinesthetic people.”

The rare and neglected accordion learnerLearning styles have been popularized by well-intentioned people, including possibly your professor of instructional design. However, the claim that we have to adapt our design to accommodate different learning styles has been repeatedly debunked by research.
