How VR and AR Will Change How Art is Experienced |  Education Technology Guy | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Virtual and augmented reality have become a trend more recently due to advances in artificial intelligence. They’ve grown to be more commonly utilized tools for interpretation of ideas in a variety of fields. VR is an immersive technology experience. Though it was commonly used in the gaming industry, it’s now being applied to a variety of fields. For example, companies can make use of simulated interviews and best choose candidates for the job when recruiting and training. AR on the other hand, supplements and enhances reality that already exists. Social media filters are a good example of this. Another example, the furniture company IKEA recently used this immersive technology to help shoppers envision how furniture would look inside their home."

VR and AR more and more are being applied to a variety of fields. More notably associated with gaming, VR and AR are proving useful in less glorified areas like job interviews and job training. In addition, it is enhancing the shopping experience, saving time and money. Lastly, in the area of art, it is being used to spice up exhibits giving patrons an alternative way of appreciating artwork. All in all, VR and AR are revolutionizing our world, pushing the boundaries of creativity and enhancing how people perceive it.

When it comes to locating educational content for a PC-powered VR headset like a Vive, Rift or WMR, it can be a little tricky for three main reasons:
1. There are multiple app stores to find content and some of the content can only be found in certain app stores.

2. Not all the stores have an easy to find Education section.

3. Some content which would be great in the classroom isn’t actually tagged as educational.

This morning I received an email from a reader who was wondering what the terms AR and VR mean. I get that question on a fairly regular basis these days. That's why earlier this year I recorded a video and posted a short slideshow that outlines the differences between augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality.

10 Reasons You Should Use A-Frame For Virtual Reality Projects - eLearning Industry

I was a skeptic, but I’m not anymore. I didn’t think there would be an easy and free way to build Virtual Reality experiences. I didn’t even have a need for Virtual Reality, so I never gave it a thought.

A few weeks ago, a colleague reached out to a group of learning professionals that I happened to be a part of. They asked if anyone in the field of learning had been working with Virtual Reality, also known as VR. My internal reaction was "Well, no, but I can figure out how to do it!". That’s how it usually begins with me. Someone asks a question about technology and I can’t get it out of my mind. I’m a do-it-yourself kind of gal. My hobby is testing out technologies and creating awareness in the learning community about those technologies.

The hype around virtual reality (VR) has died down a bit, though the conference keeps going. I was happy to attend the Versions conference earlier this year, though I was disappointed (but not surprised) that there wasn’t that much new stuff. Rather, it seems there is less happening than there was before as the medium continues to figure out what its best use cases are if it is to become a consumer technology.

Topic: Virtual Reality in higher ed?

Virtual reality is a major technological advance, unlike any technology the world has seen before. The computer-generated simulation of a 3D environment enables users to feel as if they are in a completely different setting than the one they are currently in. Based on the description of virtual reality alone, one can perceive its vast potential. However, the current development of technologies and software that enable virtual reality is heavily focused on the entertainment sector. What if virtual reality is applied to an area that is in pressing need of reform? What if it is applied to higher education?

We’ve been working with Ericsson and Connect to Learn to create a ‘virtual classroom’ that serves as a space for teachers to train before facing a real class, but what does the future hold for VR classrooms?

How Virtual Reality Could Change the Way Students Learn

How Virtual Reality Could Change the Way Students Learn | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Virtual Reality (VR) is changing the way people see the future. As with video games emerging into the classroom in the early 2000s, this new technology will soon be making its way into classrooms as well. Many teachers are receptive to working with this technology, but some of them are not quite aware of the effect VR can have on a classroom environment. It can change the way students learn in the long run."

Nando Castellanos's curator insight, May 15, 2017 6:54 PM
Regarding the intention of this article, I would say that Virtual Reality can have very good contributions in the way students learn but it also brings some gaps. I believe that it is a fact that students can internalize better the concepts presented in lessons since, as mentiioned in this article, more than one sense is involved. Also, VR can raise students' motivation since we are in an era in which technology has taken part of people's lifes and some of them even become addicted to tech. In the other, I consider that VR makes that students have less interaction among them. It means that they would become independent but at the same time it would make them become more indifferent. In addition, VR could make that the teacher's role become less important. However, if teachers find the way of implementing appropriately this kind of technology in their classrooms, it would be a tool which can help the learning process to be more effective.

Not a revolution but some evolution
Micah McTaggart's curator insight, May 24, 2017 10:50 PM
I think this is a great new technology for the classroom, albeit an expensive one. if implemented properly, with a curriculum focus, VR has the potential to really engage students in subjects they might otherwise see as boring. Ancient History for example, students could be placed in the world of ancient Rome or Egypt by using VR, they could see it with their own eyes and ears instead of just hearing about it from a teacher. This has the potential to transform the learning experience b putting the student in control of how they view the environments around them.

VR is also very appealing to many young people and they would be more willing to engage in this form of learning, than say, listening to a lecture on ancient Rome. Students may not even realise they are learning at first, which is awesome as it encourages them to seek out new information without it feeling like a burden or boring.
