10 Reasons why any doctor should explore social media

10 Reasons why any doctor should explore social media | FIASO | Scoop.it

 Introduction

Should you have a strong social media presence? I am going to give you ten reasons why I think you need one. Social media provides an opportunity to publish your thoughts and ideas and to share your experiences without having to go through a middleman. And many people are taking advantage of this. Globally half a billion tweets are posted every day. (1) Surely it must be possible to find something of value that could make it worthwhile for a doctor to start exploring these spaces? It is not nearly as difficult as you might think, because these pieces of information are not just floating unconnected to each other; they are disseminated and linked to through networks of your peers.Developing networks, and figuring out who and what to pay attention to, are some of the key learning skills we need in the twenty-first century. (2) I will convince you that it is worth developing these skills.

Why the Internet cannot replace a doctor |

Why the Internet cannot replace a doctor | | FIASO | Scoop.it

If you read some of the stories online you would thing that eventually patients won’t need health care professionals, they will be to do everything online with the help of the Internet and mobile apps.   Frankly that is a load of garbage and biopharma should not reach for the hyped golden carrot.

In this day and age of limited time with doctors coupled with ample opportunity to google anything, the temptation for people to reach their own conclusions about their illness is strong.   Spend enough time searching the internet for any given symptom and you’ll eventually end up with grave prognosis. Easy access to information does not negate the need for a professional opinion.

In Search of a Few Good Apps

In Search of a Few Good Apps | FIASO | Scoop.it
mHealth apps are mobile device applications intended to improve health outcomes, deliver health care services, or enable health research.1 The number of apps has increased substantially, and more than 40 000 health, fitness, and medical apps currently are available on the market.2 Because apps can be used to inexpensively promote wellness and manage chronic diseases, their appeal has increased with health reform and the increasing focus on value. The bewildering diversity of apps available has made it difficult for clinicians and the public to discern which apps are the safest or most effective.

Conclusions: To increase the dissemination potential, medical groups should develop a more cohesive community of shared followers. Tweet content must be engaging to provide a hook for retweeting and reaching potential audience. Next steps call for content analysis, assessment of the behavior and actions of the messengers and the recipients, and a larger-scale study that considers other medical groups using Twitter.
