There has always been cheating. Faculty have often not wanted to know about it. Few of us want to focus on policing, and we (yes, faculty) were the oddball students who were genuinely motivated by the material. The internet made cheating easier, as did portable and wearable internet devices. Most college students have long admitted to cheating in some form, and the top reason for cheating is “there was an opportunity to do so”. It’s no surprise that cheating with AI has become a top concern for faculty.

Digital ecosystems are a set of interconnected elements that enable an integrated and seamless digital experience. In education, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has great potential to improve teaching and learning. However, for the expectations placed on the educational use of AI to be met, it is necessary to develop adequate digital ecosystems that allow its effective implementation. Therefore, it is of great importance to deepen the understanding of these ecosystems and their key elements for such implementation. For this purpose, a systematic review of the literature on this subject was conducted, which included the analysis of 76 articles published in peer-reviewed journals. The main results of the review highlight the current focus of research in that matter, which relates digital ecosystems and artificial intelligence around the personalization of learning. Also, some aspects related to this relationship are analyzed from four categories: networks, applications, services, and users.

Education systems must adapt to prepare young people for tomorrow’s technology-driven economies and to help students learn alongside these emerging technologies. The World Economic Forum refers to the teaching and learning of abilities, skills, attitudes and values that are fit for the future as “Education 4.0”. Developed by a global coalition of education experts, practitioners, policy-makers and business leaders, Education 4.0 is a comprehensive framework that outlines key transformations needed in childhood education to address the needs of the future and promote better education outcomes. It consists of four sets of skills that will be needed in the future – global citizenship, innovation and creativity, technology, and interpersonal skills – as well as four sets of learning experiences – personalized and self-paced, accessible, problem-based and collaborative, and lifelong and student-driven learning. Teaching and learning that incorporates technology, particularly AI, can not only help students achieve better outcomes on technology skills but can also facilitate and enable success in other areas within the framework.

Shortly after leaving high school as a student, I was bantering with some friends about our teachers and someone remarked about Stan, a gnarly old poetry teacher. The comment was that Stan had “really taught them how to think”.
