Personalize Learning: Making the Shift to "Our" Classroom

Personalize Learning: Making the Shift to "Our" Classroom | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
Brian Anton, high school social studies teacher, shares how he had to change so his learners could drive their learning.

Mel A Az's curator insight, March 8, 2016 11:46 PM

Brian shares how he transformed his classroom to a learner-centered environment and what happened in the process with his learners. Here is a glimpse of his journey:

"As teachers, it is difficult to let go of control and to let our learners find the best ways for them to achieve content and curriculum goals. To be clear, our role in the classroom needs to change, and I think the trend in education is moving the correct direction--achieving and creating a learner-driven, personalized atmosphere is the key. Providing learners with the tools to succeed should be the goal, and we should focus on allowing them to use those tools in the way that works best individually. Instead of providing the blueprint for learners to achieve a goal, educators should be allowing and guiding them in designing, developing, and implementing their plan for accomplishing it. When this happens, drastic changes take place regarding engagement in our classrooms and ownership of learning appears, leading to a higher level of achievement."

Gust MEES's curator insight, May 14, 2016 9:16 PM

One of the most difficult parts of our jobs as educators is to create a learning environment where our learners are engaged and meet content and curriculum goals. From my experience, the single most important challenge that needs to be addressed to earn engagement in our classrooms is to develop a culture of learner autonomy--allowing and encouraging learners to take control of their own learning. There are many barriers that we, as educators, must work to clear in order to create a strong culture that allows our learners to feel comfortable with working toward a common goal in the way that works best for them.

Learner Agency: The Missing Link

Learner Agency: The Missing Link | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
First blog in series defining Learner Agency written collaboratively with the Institute of Personalized Learning.

Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, September 15, 2015 9:14 AM

Learner agency often gets missed in conversations on transforming the educational system. We have a sense of ‘agency’ when we feel in control of things that happen around us; when we feel that we can influence events. This is an important sense for learners to develop. Learners must understand:

  • when they need new learning and how to learn what they need
  • when they need to unlearn what will no longer serve them
  • when they need to relearn what they need to be successful

Bryan Bronn shares this sign created by one of his learners who embraces personalized learning and realizes what it means to educate. Bryan also.describes his journey about creating personalized learning environments at Branson Junior High School and offers some great advice to administrators who are thinking about doing this at their schools.

"Building robust educator capacity for personalizing the learning environment of a classroom, a teaching team or an entire school, requires empowering your teaching and learning team to experience the richness of personalized learning themselves. If you expect your team to facilitate personalized learning experiences for their learners, you must allow them to build their own island of success with personalized learning. Your school’s model will have common characteristics with other models of personalized learning from around the country and world; however it will also be unique if you allow your team to truly personalize your journey.  We encourage you to go create your own island of success with personalized learning!"

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is used to design curriculum, lessons and instruction based on the diversity of the learners in their classroom.

How can UDL guide personalize learning to meet the Common Core?

When a teacher understands his/her learners through the UDL lens, he/she creates a flexible learning environment and provides opportunities for learner voice and choice. When lessons are designed using the UDL model, the lesson includes goals, methods, materials, tools, and assessments to reach and support the maximum amount of learners in the classroom.

Learners can use this model to help them understand how they learn best and what learning path they can take to become an independent expert learner, leveraging their natural abilities in the process. This process helps the learner create their personal learning profile that is understood by both teacher and learner.

The importance of this strategy is that both the teacher and the learner understand who the learner is and how they learn best. The learner and the teacher uses the UDL lens to personalize learning. So what does that look like?

An example of an 8th Grade unit on the Civil War serves as an example along with two students who can meet a number of CCSS when they choose and use the tools to support their learning.

Infographic: Personalization vs Individualization vs Differentiation

Infographic: Personalization vs Individualization vs Differentiation | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
When learning is personal, teaching and learning changes. Teachers' and learners' roles change. Last January, we created a chart comparing Personalization vs Individualization vs Differentiation and a report that explained the difference between these three terms including teacher-centered vs. learner-centered approaches. This chart has been downloaded tens of thousands of times from all over the world and prompted discussions around some of these questions:

> What does personalized or personal learning mean to you?

> How do you see teachers' and learners' roles changing?

> How does a school or district know they are Ready to Transform learning?

> What is Assessment AS Learning?

> Can personalization help close the achievement gap?

> Where are the conversations, models, and examples of personalizing learning?

These questions were part of an interview from Patricia Gomes, a reporter from Porvir in Brazil who wrote an article August 12, 2012 about the chart and resulted in an article and infographic in Portuguese.

Chris Watkins, an independent consultant and leading authority on meta-learning in the UK and former reader at The Institute of Education, London Centre for Leadership in Learning makes these four points of what happens when learners drive the learning. When learners drive their learning,
  • it leads to greater engagement and intrinsic motivation for them to want to learn,
  • learners setting a higher challenge for themselves,
  • learners evaluating their own work, and
  • better problem-solving skills.

Continuum to Develop Expert Learners

Continuum to Develop Expert Learners | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
Follow the continuum to become an expert learner. As this happens, teacher and learner roles change.

Via Kathleen McClaskey
Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, March 20, 2014 10:32 AM

An expert learner is a learner who is self-directed, self-regulated, motivated and engaged to learn. They have a purpose to learn something they are interested in. They are responsible and own their learning and monitor their progress. However, this doesn't just happen overnight or even all the time. Plus, learners may not be an expert on every concept, strategy or skill. So what we did was create a continuum to develop expert learners that provides the journey learners of all ages go through to build expertise.
